4 Today: When it comes to Marriage and Divorce it is very easy to generalise and often, it is not good to do so, for each person is different, each marriage is different and each situation is different. Personally, I need to meet the people concerned. I need to listen to their pain, to their anger, to their despair. There is no way that I would dare write here exactly what each one should do. Obviously, I am in favour of marriage, and I rejoice with those who succeed in what they set out to do. I fully support and empathise with those who do not succeed in the relationship. The most common cause, from my experience, is selfishness, on one side, or both; but none of us can claim to be free from that weakness. Some years ago, now, I was at a funeral where the deceased had a son as a priest, who was a personal friend of mine. I had known his parents for some years, and, to me, they were the proverbial Darby and Joan. Mark, their son, the priest, was the apple of their eye, and he had a wonderful loving relationship with them. Mark was celebrating the funeral Mass, and I knew from experience, it wasn t going to be easy for him. When it came to the homily, I whispered a quiet prayer for him, because I knew that this was going to be the toughest part. He caught us all by surprise! He looked over at the coffin for a few quiet moments, and then he looked at his mother. He then spoke: My father was married to my mother for 58 years, and he really did come to love her in that time. He then sat down. That was it! There was nothing more or greater he could have said about his dad. Even though the homily lasted for just one sentence, there wasn t a dry eye in the church when he sat down. I believe that this is the ideal Jesus holds up for us. (MB) University of Nottingham Catholic Society To all new University students in Nottingham this year. The University of Nottingham Catholic Society (CathSoc) is a friendly and welcoming tight-knit Catholic Community based at the University of Nottingham. We have raised awareness of modern slavery in the city; we ve encouraged communities to tackle air pollution; we ve challenged business leaders to open up employment opportunities to exoffenders. At present, Nottingham Citizens is focusing on hate crime, homelessness, sanctuary, modern slavery and air pollution. What are your top three concerns?
