3 From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers We come to the fifth column in our series about obstacles to our mission of Evangelization, living as disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ in the midst of the world. Thus far we have discussed foundational spirits, personal sin, psychological concerns, and evil both human and demonic. We stated last week that evil is that force, residing either inside or outside of human beings... that seeks to kill life or liveliness. And good is its opposite. Goodness is that which promotes life and liveliness. One of the tools often used by evil to take away or reduce life is fear. Even reflecting on the previous columns in this series may have surfaced some fear in us. We cannot read them simply through our own capacity; we must study them only in the light of the Heavenly Father s love for us. We read in Sacred Scripture: There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18). Spiritually we speak of Fear of the Lord, as a gift of the Holy Spirit. The Baltimore Catechism reminds us that Fear of the Lord is great awe and reverence for Our Lord, which keeps us from offending Him by sin." This is not the kind of fear about which we speak. In more general terms, Webster defines fear as an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. In proper proportion, fear can serve a useful purpose in that it makes us aware of possible danger. When it assumes alarming proportions, it can become paralyzing and incapacitate, thus diminishing life. It is a fear that speaks to one s identity and causes one to doubt the life that is within him or her, a fear that easily leads to despair. This fear is rampant in our modern word, seeking to undermine the mission of Christ. St. John Paul II knew this. In 1978, during the homily of the Mass to inaugurate his pontificate, he stated: Brothers and sisters, do not be afraid to welcome Christ and accept his power... Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ... Do not be afraid. Christ knows what is in man. He alone knows it. So often today man does not know what is within him, in the depths of his mind and heart. So often he is uncertain about the meaning of his life on this earth. He is assailed by doubt, a doubt which turns into despair. We ask you therefore, we beg you with humility and trust, let Christ speak to man. He alone has words of life, yes, of eternal life. Fear can be communicated by human and demonic evil in a form of bullying. There are those who willfully wish to control others, to put others down, and to cause suffering to others. They exhibit repeated aggressive behavior (physical, verbal, and/or emotional) that seeks to intimidate others and make them feel less than they are. Much study had been done on adult bullies, and several types have been categorized, including the Narcissistic Adult Bully, who is self-centered, unable to empathize with others, and care little about consequences. The Impulsive Adult Bully is more spontaneous and has a difficult time restraining his or her behavior. The Physical Bully, while rare in adults, is still present and uses violence or the threat of violence to limit the life of others; this is often seen in situations of domestic violence. The Verbal Adult Bully use sarcastic and demeaning remarks, they start rumors to destroy another s reputation, and they use words to create an environment of mistrust, doubt, and despair. All of this diminishes faith, love, identity, and life. The response must be to stand one s ground, seeking the support necessary to do so in safety and with freedom. It is not worth fighting a bully on their terms. One must choose to take no more, to concede no more ground in the diminishing of one s life. Fear can be communicated in a more quiet voice that tells us we are not capable of the tasks before us. This voice undermines our capacity to grow toward wholeness and holiness. This is the voice that says don t look at your foundational spirits, your sins, your psychological concerns, or the presence of evil in the world. There is nothing you can do about it, so why go there and experience the pain involved in drudging all that up? And yet we must bring to light those things that are holding us back from growth. We need to bring to the light of spiritual direction and professional counseling those foundational spirits and psychological concerns that diminish our life and open us to being manipulated by fear. 4 Sacrament of Reconciliation our ongoing struggle with sin, opening us to the grace of God s help in our striving for virtue. We must bring to the light of faith the battle with evil that is around us for Jesus says of this battle that our greatest tools are a strong faith, prayer, and fasting (See Matt. 17:19-21; Mark 9:28-29; Luke 17:5-6). Fear can be communicated by the voice that seeks to tell us lies about our identity the voice that has us forget that, as St. John Paul II says, We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures. We are the sum of the Father s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son. This is the most insidious lie of all, for it undermines the very foundation of our identity. When we do not believe, with strong faith, that we are loved by God, we live in fear we become blind to the Beauty that is in God and the good that is in the depths of our own human minds and hearts. The tasks may seem daunting, and indeed, they are. Alone we cannot move beyond fear. We must turn to the Holy Spirit, seeking to be docile before that Spirit. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit within us through the Sacrament of Confirmation is Courage, which strengthens a person s resolve in overcoming obstacles to living the faith. We need to call upon the Holy Spirit to remind us who we are and Whose we are. We must call upon the Holy Spirit to bring light, truth, and love. St. John Paul II says: The hidden breath of the divine Spirit enables the human spirit to open in its turn before the saving and sanctifying self-opening of God. Through the gift of grace, which comes from the Holy Spirit, man enters a new life, is brought into the supernatural reality of the divine life itself and becomes a dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit, a living temple of God. For through the Holy Spirit, the Father and the Son come to him and take up their abode with him. In the communion of grace with the Trinity, man's living area is broadened and raised up to the supernatural level of divine life. Man lives in God and by God: he lives according to the Spirit, and sets his mind on the things of the Spirit (Dominum et Vivificantem, 58). Integral to our mission is our growth in wholeness and holiness. Let us recommit ourselves to this journey, shared with each other in the communion of the Church. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
