3 Time after Pentecost Jesus says that the bread he gives for the life of the world is his flesh, and whoever eats this bread has eternal life now and will be raised on the last day. In Ephesians Paul tells us what this life Jesus gives us looks like, this life we live as those marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit in baptism. We live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us. The whole purpose of life is giving yourself for the other. Gathering Music Welcome Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. *Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen.

4 Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Neither this world nor your life is so broken that God cannot restore it to wholeness. Trust and believe that, after separation, reconciliation is possible. Your sin is forgiven and God welcomes us to beloved community. 5 Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. -- Quiet reflection First Reading 1 Kings 19:4-8 Spark Story Bible Elijah went a day s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors. Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, Get up and eat. Elijah looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of God came a second time, touched him, and said, Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you. Elijah got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 5

Taste and see, the graciousness of God" Second Reading Ephesians 4:25 5:2 So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Word of God, word of life. 7 *Gospel Acclamation The holy gospel according to John, the 6 th chapter. Glory to you, O God. *Gospel Reading John 6:35, Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Then the Judeans began to complain about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. They were saying, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I have come down from heaven? Jesus answered them, Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by Abba God who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 7

8 It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard and learned from Abba God comes to me. Not that anyone has seen Abba God except the one who is from God; That one has seen Abba God. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. Be known to us, O Christ, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is our duty and delight we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 9

11 Untie the knots of failure binding us, as we release the strands we hold of others' faults. Help us not forget our Source, yet free us from not being in the Present. From you arises every Vision, Power and Song from gathering to gathering. Amen - May our future actions grow from here! Invitation to Communion Distribution All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. A gluten free wafer is also available. Those who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing. Maria Santelli is the Executive Director of the Center on Conscience and War, a national nonprofit organization which advocates for the rights of conscience and conscientious objection, also examining broader issues like whether the selective service is properly constitutionally established and 13

14 adjudicated, and whether promises made during recruitment to the military are in fact fulfilled. She will speak at the Thursday, August 23, Vets Ministry Roundtable, 11:30-1 pm at OSLC. School Kits. We are again planning to fill school kits for Lutheran World Relief on God s Work, Our Hands Sunday on September 9. The kits contain 70-sheet spiral notebooks, pencils, blue or black ink ball point pens, pencil sharpeners, blunt tip scissors, centimeter rulers and 2.5-inch erasers. Items must be new. Supplies can be brought to the church at any time or money can be donated to the project. After church on Sunday, August 19, we will be making the simple backpacks. We need people who wish to sew, iron and string the backpacks.
