The New Testament 1 Corinthians 15:35-38,42-50 Someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?" Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 4

5 So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven. What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 7 It has long been the custom at St. John s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. Today s Altar flowers are in memory of Alice Boggs who was a dedicated, life-long member of St. John s and a very active participant in many aspects of St. John s Church during her very long life. The Salem Ministerium Cycle of Prayer: Today we pray for the Lighthouse Ministry. Announcements Music in today s liturgy: Today is the Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany. As is the norm at St. John s Church, all the music is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons appointed for this day. The Choir chants Psalm 37 in a setting by John Goss ( ), an English composer of almost exclusively ecclesiastical music, organist (St. Paul s Cathedral, London) and teacher (Royal Academy of Music). The Choir s Offertory Anthem is a chorus from the Oratorio, Messiah, by George Frederick Handel ( ). The text of this chorus is from 1 Corinthians 15, a few verses prior to our Epistle lesson today. The Organ Prelude is based on the Epiphany chorale How Bright Appears the Morning Star (see H-497). This setting is by Johann Pachelbel ( ) whose contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and the fugue earned him a place among the most important German Middle-Baroque composers. The Organ Postlude is the brief spirited reflection of our final hymn tune. It is by Australian composer, June Nixon (b. 1942), Organist Emerita of St. Paul s Cathedral, Melbourne. Next Sunday, March 3, is the final Sunday before Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. At the conclusion of our Holy Eucharist next Sunday, as we have done in the past, we will bury the Alleluias! Please assist us by writing the word Alleluia on a piece of colored paper that you will find in your service leaflet next week. Those papers will be collected as you depart from the Altar and kept in a bound box through the season of lent. We will sing a Farewell to Alleluia. The Alleluias will be resurrected on Easter Sunday, April 21. SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER: Our Annual Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) Pancake and Sausage Supper will be Tuesday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. We need pancake flippers, batter mixers, sausage cookers, set-up and clean-up volunteers, and servers. If you can assist, please see Bill Clisham to volunteer your services. ASH WEDNESDAY: Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. There will be a spoken liturgy with Imposition of Ashes at Noon in the Chapel. There will also be an evening Ash Wednesday liturgy with choir and organ at 7:00 p.m. in the main Church. 7

Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 35 people this week. Volunteers for February are: 2/5 Laurie Bailey, 2/12 Sue Harker, 2/19 Ron Magill, 2/26 Bonnie and Rick Holmstrom. The March calendar is posted on the office door for volunteer s sign-up. Dear Friends of Music Around the County, Save the date Sunday, March 3, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. The wonderful Symphony in C will perform music of Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn at Salem Community College s Davidow Theatre. This is a young, up and coming orchestra and this concert represents the first time a full symphonic orchestra has come to Salem County in many years.
