7 ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in Today s Liturgy: Today is the First Sunday in Lent. As is our practice at St. John s, all of the music used in the liturgy, whether congregational, choral, or instrumental, is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons. We enter the season of Lent by singing the Great Litany in Solemn Procession. The choir will chant Psalm 25 in a Gregorian Chant setting. The Offering Anthem is a setting of a portion of Psalm 25 by Richard Farrant (c ) a member of the Chapel Royale and founder of the Blackfriars Theater. He was among the first English composers to write Verse Anthems. The Organ Prelude is a rather introspective work based on the German Chorale version of the Agnus Dei. It is by Johann Pachelbel ( ) a German composer, organist, and teacher who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body of sacred music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era. The Organ Postlude, is by Paul Hindemith ( ), a prolific German composer in multiple genres. This movement from his Organ Sonata No. 1 is not sacred music per se, but its stark and visceral mood makes it a striking match for Jesus forty days in the wilderness. St. John s Choir has returned to our regular schedule of rehearsals and Musical- Liturgical leadership. If you are interested in joining us, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please see Minister of Music, Bill Clisham, immediately after the Postlude or at Coffee Hour. No auditions are required, but a get acquainted meeting with Bill is necessary for placement and music assignment. Rehearsals are every Sunday morning at 9:00 AM prior to the 10:30 AM Choral Eucharist. There are no scheduled mid-week rehearsals apart from Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 63 people this week. The February calendar is posted on the office door so volunteers can sign up. Volunteers to date: 1/30 Larry Moore, 2/6 Peggy and Bill, 2/13 Aud, 2/20 Open, 2/27 Bonnie and Rick. 7

8 We welcome back Rev d. Frank B. Crumbaugh III, who is a native of Memphis, TN. He was educated at Centre College and The General Theological Seminary, and did additional work at The College of Preachers. He is an alumnus of The Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, ME. Fr. Crumbaugh spends at least an hour each day writing; he enjoys hunting, fishing, and woodworking, particularly building wooden boats. Fr. Crumbaugh officially retires on 1 March, 2018 after more than twenty years as Rector of The Episcopal Church of The Holy Innocents in Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island. He is married to The Rev d. Gretchen D. Zimmerman, who serves as Priest-in- Charge of The Episcopal Church of The Holy Trinity in Ocean City, NJ. They have three children and four grandchildren.
