Romans 8:22-27 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. Today s Altar flowers are given in celebration of the lives of Albert and Mary Lou George by their daughter, Amy Schwarz, and grandson, Austin. If you have donated flowers today, after the service please take your flowers to a family member or shut in. We welcome back today Rev d. Frank B. Crumbaugh III, who is a native of Memphis, TN. He was educated at Centre College and The General Theological Seminary, and did additional work at The College of Preachers. He is an alumnus of The Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, ME. Fr. Crumbaugh spends at least an hour each day 7

8 writing; he enjoys hunting, fishing, and woodworking, particularly building wooden boats. Fr. Crumbaugh recently retired after more than twenty years as Rector of The Episcopal Church of The Holy Innocents in Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island. He is married to The Rev d. Gretchen D. Zimmerman, who serves as Priest-in-Charge of The Episcopal Church of The Holy Trinity in Ocean City, NJ. They have three children and five grandchildren. ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in Today s Liturgy: Today is the Feast of Pentecost, the fiftieth day of Easter. As is our practice at St. John s, all of the music used in the liturgy, whether congregational, choral, or instrumental, is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons. This should be apparent especially in the hymns and anthems today. The Choir will sing Psalm 104:25-35, 37 in an Anglican Chant setting by Edward Cuthbert Bairstow ( ), an English organist (Yorkminster) and composer in the Anglican tradition. The Offering Anthem is a brief prayer for the Holy Spirit by Christopher Tye ( ), an English Renaissance organist (Ely Cathedral) and composer. He stopped composing after he became a priest in The Communion Anthem is also a brief Pentecost Prayer set by Melchior ( ), a German composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. He was a hugely prolific composer of Protestant church music, especially motets, and assisted in bringing the stylistic innovations of the Venetian School north into Germany. The Organ Preludes are three of five versets, based on our Processional Hymn, by Nicolas de Grigny ( ), a French organist (St. Denis, Paris) and composer. He died young and left behind a single collection of organ music, which together with the work of Francois Couperin, represents the pinnacle of the French Baroque organ tradition. The Postlude is a dynamic setting of the German chorale, Come, Holy Ghost, Lord, God. It is by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), who surely needs no introduction at St. John s. This Fantasy is the first in Bach s collection of great 18 Leipzig chorales. St. John s Choir: If you are interested in joining us as we continue to sing and lead worship through the months of May and June, concluding on St. John s Day, June 24 or if you know of someone who might be interested, please see Minister of Music, Bill Clisham, immediately after the Postlude or at Coffee Hour. No auditions are required, but a get acquainted meeting with Bill is necessary for placement and music assignment. Rehearsals are every Sunday morning at 9:00 AM prior to the 10:30 AM 8

9 Choral Eucharist. There are no scheduled mid-week rehearsals apart from Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 43 people this week. The June calendar is posted on the office door and volunteers are asked to sign up.
