Romans 4:13-25 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 4

5 as it is written, I have made you the father of many nations ) in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become the father of many nations, according to what was said, So numerous shall your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now the words, it was reckoned to him, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. 7 It has long been the custom at St. John s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in Today s Liturgy: Today is the Second Sunday in Lent. As is our practice at St. John s, all of the music used in the liturgy, whether congregational, choral, or instrumental, is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons. The choir will chant Psalm 22 in a Gregorian Chant setting. The Offering Anthem is by Henry Loosemore (c ), an English organist (King s College Cambridge and Exeter Cathedral) and a composer of church music in both Latin and English. The Organ Prelude is a short, introspective work based on our Communion Hymn. It is by Mark C. Jones (b. 1957), A native of Asheville, NC, and Director of Music and Organist at First Presbyterian Church, Pompano Beach, FL. The Organ Postlude is a setting of the German Chorale, I Yearn from My Heart, a hymn of comfort. The setting is by Johannes Brahms ( ), a prolific German Romantic composer of works for orchestra, choir, vocalist, piano, and organ. He is often referred to as one of the Three B s, along with Bach and Beethoven. St. John s Choir has returned to our regular schedule of rehearsals and Musical- Liturgical leadership. If you are interested in joining us, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please see Minister of Music, Bill Clisham, immediately after the Postlude or at Coffee Hour. No auditions are required, but a get acquainted meeting with Bill is necessary for placement and music assignment. Rehearsals are every Sunday morning at 9:00 AM prior to the 10:30 AM Choral Eucharist. There are no scheduled mid-week rehearsals apart from Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. TODAY, 3:00 p.m. at the Haven United Methodist Church, Diva & Piano, a Concert of Classics. Please see enclosed flyer. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and 7

8 contributions. We served 47 people this week. The March calendar is posted on the office door so volunteers can sign up. Volunteers to date: 1/30 Larry Moore, 2/6 Peggy and Bill, 2/13 Aud, 2/20 Peggy and Bill, 2/27 Bonnie and Rick. We welcome Rev d. Frank B. Crumbaugh III, who is a native of Memphis, TN. He was educated at Centre College and The General Theological Seminary, and did additional work at The College of Preachers. He is an alumnus of The Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, ME. Fr. Crumbaugh spends at least an hour each day writing; he enjoys hunting, fishing, and woodworking, particularly building wooden boats. Fr. Crumbaugh officially retires this Thursday, 1 March, 2018, after more than twenty years as Rector of The Episcopal Church of The Holy Innocents in Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island. He is married to The Rev d. Gretchen D. Zimmerman, who serves as Priest-in-Charge of The Episcopal Church of The Holy Trinity in Ocean City, NJ. They have three children and four grandchildren.
