We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church March 10, 2019 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 1st Sunday of Lent As we enter into this Lenten season of penance and self-denial, we're reminded that the God we follow is no stranger to these things. In this Sunday's Gospel, we see the temptations of Jesus which have parallels throughout Scripture and in our own lives. The apostle John warns against temptations to sensual lust, enticement of the eyes, and a pretentious life (cf. 1 John 2:16). Before Eve plucks the fruit from the tree, she hears it is good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). The temptations of Jesus are our own. "Turn these stones to bread." Here is the lure of bodily comfort, like good food or sensual lust. It's the simplest of temptations because it's instinctual. We want good for our bodies! But there may be times these bodily goods don't serve the higher good for our souls. The leap "from the temple parapet" would entice the eye of the person watching. A feat like this would prove Jesus' Messianic ability. His popularity could be a shortcut to the cross. We might not be daredevils, but we want people to like us and be impressed by us. Do we sacrifice our values along the way? To "bow and worship" the devil - and so claim power and a pretentious life - seems like a dramatic temptation. Not everyone may feel enticed by power in the professional sense, but all of us want control. A volunteer team can feel just as intense as the boardroom! How often do we prefer to be in control of our lives (and perhaps even the lives of others), rather than allow God to be God? When we consider areas of temptation and sin, it's not to feel ashamed. The temptation in the desert reminds us that we are not alone and that the strength of Jesus can be our strength, too. 3 A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust and A Parish of the Diocese of Greensburg Calling All Prayer Warrior's: Have you ever thought about fighting spiritual warfare? When fighting spiritual warfare, you are not fighting against flesh and blood, but powers and principalities. Did you know that abortion is actually a sacrifice to Satan? Abortion is one of those most painful topics that we have a very hard time talking about. I can say, personally, that you can heal from the pain of an abortion. God is loving and merciful when we are sorry for having offended Him. If you feel ready to stand up for God's precious little ones, please join us on the sidewalk as we prayerfully and peacefully stand on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood at 933 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh. We will leave from St Raymond's at 9:45 a.m. Pro life prayer books will be provided. Please bring a Holy Rosary and a chair if you like. Contact Rachel Burke at (724) , (760) cell. Or at Kwburke1@msn.com. If you are suffering from the pain of an abortion, visit Rachel's Vineyard retreat and counseling for assistance and healing. BIBLE Although Abraham, the father of all true believers, lived about 1850BC, the actual writings of the Bible began at the time of King David, about 1000BC. Prior to that time, the accounts of the people and events before that time were transmitted by word of mouth. Between 1000BC and the time of Jesus much was written about God, His Laws and His Chosen People but it was not until about 100AD that the Jews made a list or canon of which writings should be regarded as inspired. They established criteria which excluded several books to which the early Christian scholars referred in order to show that Jesus was the promised Messiah. The seven Books which were excluded, but accepted by Catholics in our canon are called apocryphal : Judith, Tobit, Baruch, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Sirach/Ecclesiasticus, and Wisdom. The Catholic Church maintains that these books are inspired as a source of truth to enable us to better understand who God is, how He acts and our human participation in the divine life.

Our personal spiritual formation should imitate the humility, faith and obedience of the Virgin Mother Mary. This involves an attitude of self-denial, frequent Confession, prayerful discernment of and submission to the Will of God, His Commandments and laws of the Church. One s academic preparation must consist of studying and Bible and other Church Documents given to us by the Saints, the Doctors of the Church, the Councils of Bishops and the Popes throughout history.
