3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. The miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus at the command of Jesus sets the tone for the next few weeks. The overwhelming reality of death is looking us straight in the face. We know that Good Friday is soon upon us. We still wonder the why of it all. If Jesus is demonstrating to His followers (and to the neighbors, many of whom do not believe) His absolute power over life and death, why didn t He come down from the Cross and scatter His enemies from the heights of Golgotha? Yes, we know the theology behind it. We understand God s plan for our salvation required a sacrifice greater than we could offer. He gave us the ultimate witness to love by the sufferings and death of His Son, but we want it to be easier. Life, unfortunately, isn t always easy. We will all confront the death of a loved one, if we haven t already. We will all spent time at the foot of our own crosses. The story of Lazarus and his sisters is so compelling because we can relate to it in our own lives. We respond to death in different ways. Mary is prostrate. She can t rouse herself to even leave the house. Martha, on the hand, is energized in her grief. She confronts her friend Jesus in perplexity and even in anger. Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died, she says. It s as if on the tip of her tongue was an accusation: What took you so long? Why did you wait two days before you even started your journey to Judea? Yet even in the midst of her frustration and confusion, her faith comes through. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you. The faith implied in that statement is made explicit when Jesus addresses her. I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? What a question! Her brother Lazarus, who clearly believed in Jesus as Messiah, has died. What could this mean? And yet, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, she affirms her faith. Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world. After she said this, renewed in hope, and slipped back home to her sister Mary and shared her hope with her. Together they went to the one they knew as Messiah and Savior. All was not lost. The dark veil of death will cast its shadow over our family as well. We may be devastated like Mary. We may be angry like Martha. May we have the grace, even at these most sorrowful moments, to believe that Christ is Lord and that in him, all is not lost. Death is overcome by life. Good Friday is conquered by Easter Sunday. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso The Sympathies of the parish community are extended to the family and friends of Norman A. Loiselle whose Funeral Mass was held recently. Please remember him in your prayers. 3 Welcome! In a spirit of joyful hope we welcome Kendall Kathleen DeSimone into our parish family by baptism as she begins her life of faith here within our parish community.
