1 Lesson Text: Isaiah 11:1-10 King James Version (KJV) Sunday, December 16, 2018 I. THE PERFECT KING (Isaiah 11:1-5) 1. And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2. And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; 3. And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: 4. But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. II. THE PEACEFUL KINGDOM (Isaiah 11:6-10)

2 6. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den. 9. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. 10. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. New International Version (NIV) I. THE PERFECT KING (Isaiah 11:1-5) 1. A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of

3 might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord 3. and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4. but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. II. THE PEACEFUL KINGDOM (Isaiah 11:6-10) 6. The wolf will live with the lamb,the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together;and a little child will lead them. 7. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8. The infant will play near the cobra s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper s nest. 9. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,

4 for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. 10. In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. The Messiah came from a line that seemed defeated and dead, like the stump of a tree (Isaiah 11:1). 2. God s Spirit was on the Messiah, and empowered Him (Isaiah 11:2). 3. Know that Messiah will make all things right executing perfect justice (Isaiah 11:3-5). 4. Peace and gentleness will reign over both the animal kingdom and humanity in God s kingdom (Isaiah 11:6-8). 5. There will be no cause for violence or harm under Messiah s reign because the whole world will be filled with those who know God (Isaiah 11:9). 6. God s righteousness is not limited to nationality and never
