2 A word from Fr Peter... Dear Friends, I find it pleasing to ink at my proposed six mon stint as locum (part time) in e Souern Vales, will include e wonderful annual journey we make wi our Lord during e forty days of Lent and e fifty days (some were taught forty) of Eastertide. We seek to be renewed during Lent, rough penitence. The colour purple is symbolic of repentance. A personal review (rough self-examination of conscience) and an act of repenac tance make a very helpful Lenten practice. In is way we hope to maintain a state of grace our baptismal state. A few of us will make e usual pre-easter trek to e confessional to be assured of forgiveness. I have always (from childhood) greatly valued is aid to renewal, bo as a penitent and confessor. From e early centuries, e lead-up to Easter was seen as a time for ose who had lapsed (perhaps during e crucible of persecution) to be restored and for enquirers to be prepared for baptism. What better time for baptism an at Easter, when we pass over wi Christ from dea to life, from bondage to freedom, from sin to righteousness, from darkness into light. The Church s rites during Holy Week (especially in e great ree days of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter, i.e. The Triduum), are simply a must, and are best seen as a continuing act of worship, as we journey wi Jesus from e Last Supper and Gesemane, to his Cross and to his Rising. It all reaches a wonderful culmination in e Easter Vigil, wi lighted candles and baptismal water, which will be celebrated is year at St Stephen s, Willunga, on Holy Saturday (Easter Eve). Because of e historic precedent of preparing candidates during is Season, Lent has been regarded from early times as a season in which to make a special effort to learn more about and to grow in our Christian Fai; so Lenten studies are to be encouraged and eagerly welcomed. We are fortunate is year in being able to use Bishop John s Lenten Study, Spare a Minute. I have always found at joining a group for such studies is richly rewarding and am glad to commend to you e groups for Lent now offered in Souern Vales (see p. 8). There should be enough days and times for you to find a time to suit. Making a Lenten Rule is also a useful ing to do. Don t make it too unattainable, and see it as a time for positive initiatives raer an rigorous denials. I like is little Lenten reminder card (L). May God bless you, in your Lenten Pilgrimage. Peter. Lenten Suppers 2017; Beginning wi prayers in e church at 6.30 pm for ose who can attend, we en move to e hall where a selection of delicious soups awaits. Soup, bread and fruit are all at are on offer but e all you can eat soups are well known for eir variety and quality. Then a guest speaker follows, wi e evening concluding by 9 pm. A cost of $5 per head covers costs, and any surplus is donated to charities nominated by e speakers. If you haven t been to e Lenten Suppers yet, is is e time to come and explore e sharing of ideas, e food, and e friendly atmosphere. Booking is not necessary. Bring your friends! Wednesday 29 March: Janine Anninos from e Willunga Environment Centre will fill us in on e wonderful environmental work being done in our local area. Written by Christine Irvine, Murray Bridge A Diocesan challenge In a letter to e Diocese, read in all churches on Sunday 26 February, Bishop John passed on from Diocesan Council a challenge to us all to increase our congregations by 25% by e feast of Christ e King (end of November) I hope and pray, he writes, at every disciple in e Diocese will do all ey can to pray at we can be granted opportunities to share our fai; be given e streng to respond to em; and graced wi e vision to inspire oers wi a knowledge of God s will and purpose. If you didn t receive a copy of is letter, it is available from e Secretary, ph News from St Stephen s, Willunga We are pleased to have Fr Paul Monash, from e Parish of Souern Suburbs, to take services at St Stephen s once a mon. We ank him, Fr Dennis, & Fr Peter for celebrating over recent weeks. Please keep Fr Bob Hupfeld in your prayers. We welcomed e Thomson family (Fr Peter, his wife Roslyn and daughter Joanna) to St Stephen's and were glad to have em join e February Saturday Night Out at e Willunga Hotel, which was attended by 12 people from across e PD. The next Saturday Night Out will be on March 11 at e Willunga Hotel at 6.45 pm after e 5.30 pm service. Paul Scott, a parishioner of St Peter's Caedral, visited St Stephen's on January 30. Paul, in retirement, has taken on a project to photograph rural churches in SA. He spent much of e morning taking interior and exterior photos before moving onto St Joseph's Caolic Church, Willunga and en on to Christ Church, Yankalilla. St Ann's is on his list. Landon Felix Carey was baptised on Saturday February 18 at e 5.30 pm service. This was Fr Peter's first baptism in e Souern Vales. A revised Epiphany service and e AAPB baptism liturgy were integrated for is occasion. 5 News from St Ann s, Aldinga Things have been winding up again after a relatively quiet start to e year. Our Friends of St Ann s meeting, e first for e year, was held on February 7 wi an attendance of eighteen. It is very encouraging at people are interested in helping to keep e wheels turning here. The meeting covered some forward planning which includes anoer Quiz Night booked in wi our organiser for e 14 July. Maintenance matters, including e need to see to e removal of and replanting of some trees on e norern boundary of e church, were reviewed, and details updated. Thanks to Bill, Peter and eir helpers in seeing to ese tasks as required. We have had very regular voluntary help from a number of individuals who are keeping e cemetery grounds and church gardens in top condition. Many anks to ese people. We are still enjoying e welcome presence at our services of Fr Dennis, Fr Jeff Oake, and Fr Ted Newing, and welcome Fr Peter Thomson as our locum. We are enriched by e diversity of eir sermons and eir services. Our Family Services continue to be presented and received well by e congregation anks to e continuing team work of ose preparing em each mon. Pat Roper & Brian McMillan, Wardens AC Our Family Tea on e 24 February drew a full house, and we were delighted at Peter and Patricia Bissell, back in McLaren Vale ese days after Peter s long hospitalisation, were able to join us. It was eir first outing in 12 mons, and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate eir 65 wedding anniversary! Wi Brian at e keyboard and Jack Warrington, Barbara Walter and Margaret Cale leading e singing, all joined in e Anniversary Waltz and oer songs. We are delighted at parishioners from e oer churches join us for ese informal sharing occasions, and bring visitors! Above: Peter & Patricia blow out e anniversary candle, watched by Bill Cale and Helen Davies. News from St Philip & St James, Old Noarlunga Hi, Fellow Broers and Sisters in Christ Work to recover The Church on e Hill progresses slowly and will continue to do so as we strive to do e best job we can to keep e c(c)hurch* secure for e next 100 years. Brian McMillan, Peter Chapman, Rupert Best and Judy Wells met wi Will Allen from Heritage Stone Restorations at St Philip and St James on 20/02/17 to discuss what needs to be done, in what order and at what cost. It was decided at underpinning e eastern wall of e sanctuary and Vestry is e most effective pa. To at end we will ask for quotes to design e plan and once we have it, quotes to engineer it. Will suggested digging an air trench around e church to drain water away from e wall and assist wi management of e salt damp. Peter has also reported at he has received offers of help from ree sources in Old Noarlunga. Brian is going to approach e National Trust regarding a National Trust Appeal to be set up for Saint Philip and Saint James as money donated to it will be tax deductable. Having said at, e time is also close when we need to let bo e people of Old Noarlunga and e City of Onkaparinga generally know, as ey too have ongoing ties to "our c(c)hurch". As in all ings we look to our Bishop and rough him e Vicar General for guidance and blessings on our endeavours. We ask all of you for your prayers. *Judi writes c(c)hurch deliberately. Ask her why. 5 Judy Wells and Stephen Wells, Wardens

6 Walking e Way On Monday 14 February priests and Councillors of our Ministry District met at St Ann s wi representatives of Diocesan Council, to discuss financial matters relating to proposed changes (see News from PDC). Photo T Sandercock News from St Margaret s, McLaren Vale We welcome e Rev d Peter Thomson as our locum for e next six mons. We also welcome his wife and daughter, Ros and Joanne into our pastoral district and pray ey'll survive our many and varied needs wiout too many scars! They travel from Westbourne Park to serve us, so we need to be mindful of is extra travelling when asking for help. So far Peter has survived council meetings, a parish dinner and a hippie birday party. He, Ros and Jo made an impressive groovy trio in eir cool outfits! Greg Roberts is taking on e role of people's warden from Julia Drought after e Vestry meeting. We wish him well in revisiting is role. Julia will still write reports and act as second in Greg Roberts absence. Grounds around e church, as always, need constant care, and now e ground has sufficiently dried out our maintenance team has been busy spraying weeds, mowing and trimming. Thank you team, e place looks happier. The back rectory garden clean-up will be next to be tackled. We are rilled to see e new baptismal font, skilfully crafted locally, donated in memoriam to Edna and Harry Ribbons by eir daughter, Jill Ribbons. Its front now awaits a memorial plaque and it will be blessed on Sunday 12 March. Thankyou Jill for is beautiful and fitting memorial. Photo: T Sandercock We also have a new white cross to be dedicated. Julia Drought & Greg John, Wardens. Recognise ese people? See p. 9! A Julia Drought s 60 birday B party at St Margaret s, voted e fun event of e year, was an occasion involving e PD, and some strange characters turned up! In lieu of presents Julia asked for donations to her favourite charity, WINS (Women in Need in Syria) and she was rilled at over $900 was donated. Photos: J Evans C D 6

7 News from Pastoral District Council The meeting was chaired by Ted Sandercock, wi Fr Peter Thomson in attendance. Matters discussed included e following: Walking e Way: Clergy and wardens of Souern Vales and Yankalilla/Delamere attended a Walking e Way meeting on Mon. 13 February when ree members from e Diocesan Finance and Property team, Bruce Stanley, Jeff McHugh and Fr David Price, came to discuss our commitment towards e Diocesan Vision for e future. Bruce Stanley addressed e topic of gifts to e Home Mission Fund to assist wi e resourcing of 3.5 additional clergy in e Diocese. (It is proposed at an additional half time position be allocated to e Souern Vales Ministry District.) The goal is to raise $500,000 to fund is aim for at least e first year, after which e hope is at grow will enable funding to be generated from wiin e Ministry Districts. It was suggested at 12% of all Special Purpose Funds held wi e Diocese might be gifted as a one off contribution to raise is funding. The Pastoral District Council agreed to gift $50,000 (sourced from various accounts) to is Fund. The Integrated Accounting System previously promoted is not being continued. An alternative way of operating is a work in progress. Jeff McHugh raised e matter of Ministry District properties: what would be a suitable location for rectories? What was e situation wi Ss Philip & James land? We need to make decisions about e way ahead, en consider what finance and property we would need to achieve at. Mission Action Plan: some of e teams need to be re-formed, as ings had tended to run down at e end of e year wi many oer matters to be worked on. Leaders will be contacted and encouraged to do is. Website: The Aim 1 action group had met to look at e new temporary website. Pat Roper, its co-ordinator, needed photos and information about e churches to send to Glen Laundy for e update. The site would be based on e one for West Dartmoor. Permission was needed to be obtained from ose photographed, and new forms will be made available. Meanwhile any children photographed must still have permission forms filled by parents/guardians. Towards a Ministry District: Considering e formation of a Ministry District consisting of e present PDs of Souern Vales and Yankalilla/Delamere, it is proposed at a Ministry District Council consisting of stipendiary clergy, one warden from each centre, e secretary, e treasurer and a chair appointed from one of e oer wardens, meet every two mons. This Council would be responsible for governance and strategic direction, and financial oversight of anying costing over $250. Each church centre would have a group such as a Guild or Friends. These will be responsible for local matters, and will report to e Ministry District Council. The Grapevine will continue to include news from all centres. Finance Report: PD Souern Vales Jan 2017 $ Special Purpose Funds Jan 2017 $ Nett monly income 10, Income 1, Monly expenditure 11, Expenditure Operating profit/loss Operating profit/loss 1, Missions The Treasurer explained at our year s insurance had been paid in full instead of monly, helping e diocese. She also pointed out at council rates would soon have to be paid, from e Special Purpose Funds. It was noted at alough we had been prepared under present circumstances to hold only two Eucharistic services a mon in each church, we were in fact managing to have ree, wi relieving clergy. However, e Treasurer pointed out e cost of is. While we are not meeting our budgeted target, can we really afford it? The McLaren Vale Harvest Festival on e 14 of February had been a huge event. The churches role had been led by Fr Ted Newing, Fr Charles Gauci and Pastor Mark Kaesler. We need to ensure greater participation by our church. Yankalilla/Delamere had proposed an open-air Ministry District event to be held on Sun 30 April. However, at would be Ss Philip & James Patronal Festival at St Margaret s. Yankalilla/Delamere to be invited to is instead. The importance of prayer meetings was emphasised and encouraged. The next meeting of PDC will be on Tuesday 21 st March at 7 pm. 7
