Amen. The anthem sets the text of the collect for the Third Sunday after Epiphany from the Book of Common Prayer. Orlando Gibbons ( ) was a leading court composer of his day having been a chorister at King s College. His music stands right at the end of a tradition of renaissance polyphony that stretches back well before the Reformation.
3 SUNDAY 27 th JANUARY am Choral Holy Communion Hymns: 342, 367, 394 Mass: Schubert, Mass in G Readings: Nehemiah 8: 1-3, 5-6, 8-10 or 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31a Luke 4: Voluntary: Menuet Gothique, Boëllmann 4 th Sunday of Epiphany 6.00 pm Choral Evensong Preacher: The Revd Alison Walker, Methodist Minister in the Cambridge Circuit Responses: Byrd Psalm: 33 Readings: Numbers 9: 15-end; 1 Corinthians 7: Canticles: Hurford in G Anthem: Jubilate Deo a 8, G. Gabrieli Hymns: 206, 299, 157 Voluntary: Processional, Matthias Jubilate Deo, omnis terra; servite Domino in laetitia. Introite in conspectu ejus in exsultatione. Scitote quoniam Dominus ipse est Deus; ipse fecit nos, et non ipsi nos: populus ejus, et oves pascuae ejus. Introite portas ejus in confessione; atria ejus in hymnis: confitemini illi. Laudate nomen ejus, quoniam suavis est Dominus: in aeternum misericordia ejus, et usque in generationem et generationem veritas ejus O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.
4 Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Psalm 100 Giovanni Gabrieli ( ) was one of the leading Venetian composers of his day, working at St Mark s Basilica (like his uncle and teacher Andreas Gabrieli). Along with other St Mark s composers, he is known for spatial or antiphonal separation of distinct groups of singers or instrumentalists. He played an important part in the shift between what we commonly describe as renaissance and baroque styles. WEDNESDAY 30 th JANUARY Charles, King & Martyr, pm Words & Music on the Theme of Imagination Presentation of Christ in the Temple SUNDAY 3 rd FEBRUARY (Candlemas) Second Name Day am Choral Holy Communion (with St Bene t s) Preacher: The Revd Zachary Guiliano, Curate of St Bene t s Hymns: 157, 33, 27, 181, Mass: Dove Missa Brevis Readings: Malachi 3: 1-5 or Hebrews 2: 14-end; Luke 2: Communion: Ave verum corpus, Elgar (for translation see overleaf) Nunc Dimittis: Hurford in G Voluntary: Paen, Howells
5 Ave verum Corpus, Natum ex Maria Virgine, Vere passum, immolatum In cruce pro homine, Cujus latus perforatum Unda fluxit sanguine: Esto nobis praegustatum In mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie! O Jesu Fili Mariae. Amen. Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood; be unto us the foretaste in the trial of death. O gentle, O holy one! O Jesu, Son of Mary. Amen The Communion motet sees Edward Elgar ( ) setting a muchloved text addressed to Christ in the sacrament, and therefore closely associated with our dedication to Corpus Christi. The Nunc Dimitis sets the words of Simeon at the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. It has been put frequently to music, as the Gospel canticle at Compline, and one of two in Anglican evensong. Our setting today comes from the renowned organist Peter Hurford (b. 1930), as part of his evensong canticles in G.
6 SUNDAY 3 rd FEBRUARY cont d 6.00 pm Choral Evensong Preacher: Professor Simon Oliver Van Mildert Professor of Divinity, University of Durham Introit: O salutaris hostia, Howells Responses: Leighton Psalm: 122 Readings: Haggai 2: 1-9; John 2: Canticles: Howells Collegium Regale Anthem: Ave maria, Parsons Hymns: 254, 433 (om*), 343 Voluntary: Prelude No.2, Stanford O salutaris Hostia, Quæ cæli pandis ostium: Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria. Amen. O saving Victim, opening wide The gate of Heaven to us below; Our foes press hard on every side; Thine aid supply; thy strength bestow. To thy great name be endless praise, Immortal Godhead, One in Three. O grant us endless length of days, In our true native land with thee. Amen. The introit is one of two short hymns written by the illustrious theologian and philosopher St Thomas Aquinas ( ) for
7 institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi. Today, it features prominently in the rite of Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, where the congregation is blessed with the consecrated host. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. The text of the anthem is an ancient prayer formed from two exclamations, both from the beginning of the Gospel of Luke: words of the Archangel Gabriel, and then St Elizabeth, addressed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Familiar additional words ( Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death ) were added only more recently. Robert Parsons (ca or 72) is known today largely for this piece, which is admired for its lyrical beauty, and its magnificent Amen. WEDNESDAY 6 th FEBRUARY 9.00 pm Compline Anthem: Ubi caritas, Duruflé The Martyrs of Japan Maurice Duruflé ( ) published relatively little music, but what we have is recognised as being of particularly high quality. Alongside his organ music, the Requiem (from the 1940s) is held in particular admiration, being to the later twentieth century what Faure s Requiem is to the opening of the century. Like the Requiem, his Four Motets of 1960 of which Ubi Caritas is one are based on the plainsong melodies associated with the text: they are Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens. Our motet this evening uses the text and melody from one of the antiphons that is sung during the washing of feet on Maundy Thursday.
8 SUNDAY 10 th FEBRUARY 4 th Sunday before Lent am Choral Holy Communion (Lower voices) Hymns: 137, 364, 372 Mass: Rheinberger, Mass in F Op. 190 Readings: Isaiah 6: 1-8 [9-end] or 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11; Luke 5: 1-11 Voluntary: Fugue, Sonata No.3 in G major, Rheinberger 6.00 pm Choral Evensong Preacher: The Rt Revd Tim Thornton, Bishop at Lambeth Responses: Byrd Psalm: 2 Readings: Wisdom 6: 1-21 or Hosea ch 1; Colossians 3: 1-22 Canticles: Gibbons second service Anthem: View me Lord, Nunn Hymns: 245, 459, 390 Voluntary: Allegro ma non troppo, Sonate II, CPE Bach View me, Lord, a work of thine! Shall I then lie downed in night? Might thy grace in me but shine, I should seem made all of light. Cleanse me, Lord, that I may kneel At thine altar pure and white; They at once thy mercies feel, Gaze no more on earth's delight. Worldly joys like shadows fade When the heavenly light appears; But the covenants Thou hast made, Endless, know not days nor years. In thy word, Lord, is my trust, To thy mercies fast I fly; Though I am but clay and dust, Yet thy grace can lift me high. Thomas Campion
9 After Candlemas, our thoughts begin to turn towards Lent, the church s principal period of reflection and penitence. Campion ( ) was a composer as well as a poet. His text, which appeals to God for grace, fits the Lent-wards glance. The connection between creation and redemption is particularly strong, asking that what God has begun with the former will be restored and completed with the latter. The composer, David Nunn, was a recent undergraduate music student at Corpus. WEDNESDAY 13 th FEBRUARY 9.00 pm Words & Music on the Theme of Love Eve of St Valentine SUNDAY 17 th FEBRUARY 3 rd Sunday before Lent am Choral Holy Communion (Upper Voices) Hymns: 436, 310, 447 Mass: Faure, Messe Basse Readings: Jeremiah 17: 5-10 or 1 Corinthians 15: 12-20; Luke 6: Voluntary: In dir ist freude BWV 615, J S Bach 6.00 pm Choral Evensong Preacher: David Bagnall, Ordinand Responses: Leighton Psalm: 6 Readings: Wisdom 11: 21-12: 11 or Hosea 10: 1-8, 12; Galatians 4: 8-20 Canticles: Walmisley in D minor Anthem: There is an old belief, Parry Hymns: 463, 337, 294 Voluntary: Prelude and Fugue in B flat BWV 560, J S Bach
10 There is an old belief That on some solemn shore Beyond the sphere of grief dear friends shall meet once more, Beyond the sphere of Time And Sin, and Fate's control, Serene in changeless prime of body and of soul. That creed I fain would keep, That hope I'll ne'er forgo. Eternal be the sleep, if not to waken so. Words by John Gibson Lockhart The anthem is one of the Songs of Farewell, composed between 1913 and 1918 by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry ( ), poignantly towards the end of his life. The text by Lockhart ( ), a Scottish writer and editor, takes up a theme that is common in popular piety but rather under-developed in formal theology, namely the social character of the life of the world to come. WEDNESDAY 20 th FEBRUARY 9.00 pm Taizé Service Chants led by the Chapel Choir SUNDAY 24 th FEBRUARY 2 nd Sunday before Lent am Choral Holy Communion Hymns: 233, 430, 481 Mass: Haydn, Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo Readings: Genesis 2: 4b-9, 15-end or Revelation ch 4; Luke 8: Voluntary: Prealudium in G minor, Buxtehude

Schmid the Elder Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; Shut not thy merciful ears unto our pray'rs; But spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty. O holy and most merciful Saviour, Thou most worthy Judge eternal, Suffer us not at our last hour, For any pains of death to fall away from Thee. Book of Common Prayer, Order for the Burial of the Dead The anthem comes from a setting of some texts (and two pieces of processional music, including a magnificent march) from the Prayer Book burial service, composed by one of England s greatest composers, Henry Purcell ( ), for the funeral of Queen Mary in March Purcell died in the same year. We can only guess to what heights his already substantial genius would have risen, had he lived longer. WEDNESDAY 27 th George Herbert, FEBRUARY Priest, Poet, pm Words & Music on the Theme of Poetry to celebrate George Herbert

For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing of birds is come, And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land The figtree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise my love, my fair one and come away. Words Song of Solomon 2 vv The anthem by Patrick Hadley ( ) was published in It remains his most popular work. The words, from the Bible s great love poem, offer one of literature s most glorious invocations of the coming of Spring.

It included simple settings in English (including some tunes for the English Psalter compiled by Corpus s own Matthew Parker) and magnificent Mass settings, such as his Missa Puer natus est nobis. His Salvator Mundi, published in 1575, sets an antiphon from Matins on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (14 September).
