St. Alban's proclaims to all, through word and deed, the grace of God in Jesus Christ. December 24, 2017 The Fourth Sunday of Advent 9:00 AM Holy Eucharist, Rite I According to the Book of Common Prayer (BCP)

ADVENT CHRISTMAS EPIPHANY LENT EASTER PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins at Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. We re glad that you re here! St. Alban s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something the community does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God s Word. And it reminds us every week of God s grace in Jesus Christ. Guests: Please complete the hello card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban s tote bag. Restrooms: Men s and women s restrooms are available on either side of the narthex (lobby). Changing tables are available in every restroom in the Parish Hall and office building across from the courtyard. Please silence cell phones and mobile devices. During the prelude, please be mindful of those preparing for worship. 2

Children are welcome in our services. Please help them be mindful of others who are with us for worship. If your little ones get restless, feel free to take them for a walk in the narthex or courtyard. At our 9:00 & 11:15 AM services, our nursery is open for ages 0-4. Today the nursery hours are 10:00 to 11:30 AM. Nursery (ages 0-4): Open from 8:45 AM-12:45 PM (open 10:00-11:30 AM today) in the Sunday School Building. After announcements, some parents/caregivers choose to pick up their children from the nursery to bring them to Communion; others choose to pick them up after the end of the service. Children s Chapel (ages 4-9): There is no Children's Chapel today. Godly Tots (Age 2 to 4) Godly Tots Rm, Outreach Ctr (ORC), 1st fl, Rm 8 Godly Play (Ages 4-6; K, 1st & 2nd gr.) 5 The Opening Acclamation BCP 323 Celebrant People Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Collect for Purity Celebrant People Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Summary of the Law Celebrant Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Kyrie Hymnal S-91 Sung by all. 5

The Collect of the Day BCP 160 Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. We beseech thee, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by thy daily visitation, that when thy Son Jesus Christ cometh he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. People Amen. Please be seated. The Old Testament Lesson 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16 Pew Bible, p. 245 When the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent." Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you." But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever. Lector People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

Read in unison. Canticle 3 Magnificat Luke 1:46-55 My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Epistle Romans 16:25-27 Pew Bible, p. 926 Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen. Lector People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 7

Please remain standing and face the Gospel reader. The Gospel Luke 1:26-38 Pew Bible, p. 831 Deacon People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God. Then Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. Deacon People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Please be seated. The Sermon The Rev. Neal McGowan 9

All stand. The Nicene Creed BCP 327 I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic* and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Catholic means universal. 10

The Prayers of the People Form III, BCP 387 Please kneel. The Intercessor and People pray responsively. Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic* Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of thy Church may truly and humbly serve thee; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andy, Dena, Jeff, and Hector, our Bishops; for Aaron and Judy, our Priests; for Neal, our Curate; for Alberto, our Deacon; for Korey, our seminarian; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of thy Word and Sacraments. We pray for our armed forces, for the people of our country, for peace in the Middle East, and for Donald, our President; Greg, our Governor; Kyle, our Mayor; and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do thy will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in thy sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to all the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise thee for Thomas the Apostle and all thy saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in thy heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence We pray for all those on our parish prayer list. We pray for our sister parish of All Saints, Nambiti, Malawi. We pray for those in our parish family who will celebrate birthdays and anniversaries in the coming week. The Celebrant adds a concluding collect. Our continuing parish prayer list, birthdays, and anniversaries may be found on page 20. Please contact the church office to add or remove a name from the list. 11

Confession of Sin BCP 330 The Deacon says Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Silence may be kept. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. The Absolution BCP 332 The Comfortable Words BCP 332 Called the comfortable words since the 16th century because of their ability to give comfort, these Bible verses (Matthew 11:28, John 3:16, 1 Timothy 1:15, 1 John 2:1-2) are a cherished part of Anglican liturgy. The Peace BCP 332 Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. The people greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. 14 The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer II BCP 340 It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Because thou didst send thy beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Sanctus & Benedictus Hymnal S

People kneel or stand for Eucharistic Prayers. Eucharistic Canon and Christ's Words of Institution BCP 341 This bulletin contains all congregational responses. To save space, the priest s prayers are not printed here. If you d like to follow along with this part of the service, we encourage you to turn to page 341 in the Book of Common Prayer. The Lord's Prayer BCP 336 Celebrant People And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Agnus Dei Hymnal S

Prayer of Humble Access BCP 337 All say We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Invitation to Communion & Ministration of the Sacrament All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion. See p. 14 for instructions. If you would like a gluten-free wafer, please tell the minister at the rail. If you have questions about what we believe about Communion, visit stalbanswaco.org/communion. Music during Communion Rorate caeli (Choral orné) Jeanne Demessieux ( ) The Sending Out of Lay Eucharistic Visitors [when appointed] Celebrant People In the name of God and St. Alban s, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us the communion of Christ s body and blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. 16

All kneel. Post-Communion Prayer BCP 339 After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray Celebrant and People Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. The Blessing 17
