1 December 23, 2017 Fourth Week of Advent Holy Eucharist Rite II 5:00 pm Before the Service Please keep a moment of silence to prepare your hearts and minds for worship and if you so desire you may use the following prayer: O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Prelude Processional Hymn Hymnal 68, vs 1-3 Rejoice! rejoice, believers, and let your lights appear! The evening is advancing, and darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising, and soon he will draw nigh; up, watch in expectation! at midnight comes the cry. See that your lamps are burning, replenish them with oil; look now for your salvation, the end of sin and toil. The marriage feast is waiting, the gates wide open stand; rise up, ye heirs of glory, the Bridegroom is at hand! I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar? Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God. Homily [You may be seated after the homily opening prayer] Building a House for God [After the homily there will be a moment of silence for private meditation] Creed BCP 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. 7 A d v e n t W r e a t h C a n d l e # 4 : P e a c e The Fourth Candle is a symbol of Peace. We believe that Jesus Christ, as the Prince of Peace, brings peace to our hearts and to our lives. Jesus gives us hope, shows us how to live a life of love and service, and brings us joy. When we live in Christ we can experience peace that the world cannot give. The world is full of injustice, pain, and hopelessness: through the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, following the teachings and way of life of Jesus Christ, we can bring peace to a world that desperately needs it. In God s Peace, Dean Justin+ beacon o f hope... To the Glory of God The Bread and Wine are given to the Glory of God in honor of Bill Johns 90th birthday from his wife and children. The Sanctuary Light is given to the Glory of God by Gil and Jeannie Haas in celebration of the life of Mary Frances Haas, our Mom. Annual Giving Update Liturgy We Live by Dr. Gil Haas An Jewish espousal is a pledge to marry that was considered final. All that remained was its consummation once the husband completed financial and housing arrangements. A young Jewish woman in the first century would be of marriageable age when she became twelve and a half years of age. Once the groom was identified, the bride and groom would exchange marital consent; Mary and Joseph had completed the contract of betrothal from St. Matthew s testimony. But, the bride remained in her father s house between three months and a year; in Mary s case this may have been with her cousin, Elizabeth. Luke s narrative implies that Mary had left her father s house with Joseph, and it seems that their betrothal had been converted into a chaste marriage. Since Joseph was aware of the circumstances of Jesus conception, Luke was probably referring to a non-consummated marriage when he labels Mary as Joseph s espoused wife. When Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he does what the angel commanded him, and took unto him his wife. Presumably this occurred in Nazareth as Joseph would not have brought Mary to Bethlehem if she were still a member of her father s household. 7
