As true disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to renew His love and spirit by sharing our time, talent and treasure. St. Louise de Marillac Mission Statement

2 Page 2 PASTORS CORNER Pentecost Time to Review our Role in Mission Pentecost can be thought of as the birthday of the Church. We have just passed through the Easter Season pondering the mystery of the resurrec on of our Lord. Today, we are given the gi of the Spirit which was promised to the disciples by Jesus. In today s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we are treated to a whole host of biblical symbols, all which should seem familiar since they appear throughout the Old Testament. First, there is the sound of a mighty wind from heaven filling the whole house. The word in Greek for spirit and wind is the same, so the wind clearly indicates the Spirit of God. Then there appeared tongues of fire which rested on the head of each one present. We remember Moses speaking to God out of the bush which was on fire. When the Spirit descends on the Apostles, they are able to understand and speak all languages, to bring the Good News to all. This is a reversal of the ac ons of God when the Israelites built the tower of Babel, and all spoke different languages and did not understand one another. The Gospel today has a quite different account of the coming of the Spirit on the disciples. It is the evening of Easter Sunday and the disciples are in a room, with the doors firmly locked. Fear and anxiety is the prevailing mood among them. All of a sudden, Jesus is there in their midst. Shalom, Peace with you is his gree ng. Jesus had promised that he would bring peace, a very special kind of peace, to his disciples. A peace they could not get anywhere else and a peace that no one and nothing could take away from them. A er showing them the wounds on his side, hands and feet, he gives them their mission: As the Father sent me, so am I sending you. Their mission is the same as his; they are to con nue doing what he did. Then he breathes on them and gives them a new life, making them a new crea on, giving them the life of his Spirit, saying: Receive the Holy Spirit. Then he goes on to say, Those whose sins you forgive are forgiven The disciples are being given the authority to bring people back to God, to reconcile those who have become separated from their God. This is ul mately the mission of the Church, to bring people to God. This was the mission given by Jesus to his disciples and the same mission has been given to each one of us. So, as soon as a person becomes reconciled with God as Lord and Jesus as Savior, that person in turn accepts the obliga on to become in turn a reconciler of others. Father Robert Fulton

3 VOCATIONS PRIESTS AND DEACONS Page 3 PRIEST RETIREMENT FUND Next weekend, June 10th and 11th, all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give generously to support the Re rement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests. Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are re red. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensa- on, and in many cases, no pension, these men o en re re with nothing to fall back upon. Your contribu ons can change that. The Priest Re rement Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catholic priests who have served us so faithfully. Your contribu on will help archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in re rement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devo on to God, and faithful service to our parish communi es. FR. St. Ignatius THIS WEEK S HIGHLIGHTS An Update on My Voca on Discernment Daniel Vega Dear St. Louise Parish families, Thank you for all your prayers and support. I have just completed my second year of pre-theology at St. John s Seminary, thus finishing the pre-theological program which focuses on philosophical and language studies. Next school year, I will begin theological studies, which includes Biblical studies, homile cs, systema c theology, liturgical training, and others. If God wills it, I will be ordained a priest in five more years. I could not do it without your prayers and support thank you! As you might recall, last summer I worked at the Archdiocesan Catholic Center to help develop an interac ve website to teach children about the lives of the saints. The team behind the project is s ll implemen ng its final details; I ll be happy to share the link with you once everything is finalized. This summer however, will be different. My seminary supervisors and I agreed that it would be good for me to receive experience in parish ministry at two parishes. As a result, I will spend my summer assignment working at two parishes in the Archdiocese. Please con nue to pray for both Marko Rudela, who announced a couple of weeks ago that he intends on becoming a priest and will enter the seminary in the Fall, and me, as we con nue on our spiritual journeys together at St. john s Seminary. Your prayers and support make all the difference for voca ons. Thanks again! Sincerely, Daniel Vega

4 Page 4 PRAY THE ROSARY The Rosary is a Prayer for Our Times. Pilgrims pray near a large rosary at the shrine of Our Lady of Fa ma in central Portugal. At Fá ma, Mary said we should pray the rosary every day for peace peace in a violent world, but also peace in our hearts. When we pray the rosary, we join Mary in turning our eyes to Jesus remembering the mysteries of his life. The rosary asks us to unplug and to be s ll - to spend me with Mary, just thinking about Jesus. When we pray the rosary, we join Mary in turning our eyes to Jesus - remembering the mysteries of his life. Mysteries in which we see unfolding the work of our salva on. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: The name Jesus contains all: God and man and the whole economy of crea on and salva on. To pray Jesus is to invoke him and to call him within us. His name is the only one that contains the presence it signifies. Which means is that when we say the Holy Name of Jesus he is with us. There can be no more powerful name than that. And although we can some mes take this for granted, it is the name of Jesus that is at the heart of the rosary Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. It is not a new teaching. Saints and countless ordinary Chris ans have been praying the rosary daily for centuries. But the rosary seems to be just the prayer we need for our distracted and troubled mes. At Fa ma, Mary said we should pray the rosary every day for peace peace in a violent world, but also peace in our hearts. When we pray the rosary, we join Mary in turning our eyes to Jesus remembering the mysteries of his life. Mysteries in which we see unfolding the work of our salva on. The rosary is a prayer of quiet and contempla on and we need this in our culture, which is so restless and noisy, a culture that seems always to be turned on and seems to intrude into our every waking moment, never leaving us alone with our thoughts. And let us ask Our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Fa ma, to open our hearts and lead us to Jesus, in whose name we find hope and redemp on. Par ally reprinted from an ar cle by Archbishop José H. Gomez, on May 16, 2017 in the Angelus. WORSHIP AND LITURGY COME PRAY THE ROSARY! Pope Francis describes the rosary as Spiritual medicine for the heart, soul and the whole of life! The Our Lady of Fa ma Prayer group welcomes new members to pray the rosary every Friday at 10:30 am in the Parish Center Board Room. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn the rosary. Don t shy away from our prayer group because you are rusty in saying the rosary or if you have never been in the prac ce of saying the rosary. We would love to teach you. ROSARY MAKING GROUP Learn how to make a rosary for someone less fortunate. Through the Blessed Mother s request at Fa ma, and in order to gain peace in our homes, country and in the world, our parish Rosary Makers invite men, women and children to accept Mary s invita on to provide rosaries to those who will never have one unless it is provided for them. In this way you are the Blessed Mother s hands. You are invited to learn how to make a rosary which takes about 20 minutes to complete. Please come to one of our mee ngs on the second and fourth Thursday at 9:30 am in the Parish Center Board Room. We will meet Thursday, June 8th, please join us! It marks fi y days a er the celebra on of Easter and the day on which according to the account in the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit was given to the first followers of Jesus and has been celebrated as the birthday of the church. It is our custom to wear red for this day, it is the liturgical color of the day.
