2 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY 2 Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON A righteous branch springing up from David Jeremiah 33:14-16 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness." THE PSALM Ad te, Domine, levavi Psalm 25:1-9 1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; for they are from everlasting. my God, I put my trust in you; * let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 6 Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; * remember me according to your love 2 Let none who look to you be put to shame; * and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD. let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes. 7 Gracious and upright is the LORD; * therefore he teaches sinners in his way. 3 Show me your ways, O LORD, * and teach me your paths. 8 He guides the humble in doing right * and teaches his way to the lowly. 4 Lead me in your truth and teach me, * for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. 9 All the paths of the LORD are love and faithfulness * to those who keep his covenant and his 5 Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, * testimonies. THE SECOND LESSON Strengthen hearts of holiness for the coming of the Lord 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. THE GOSPEL Be alert for the coming of the Son of Man Luke 21:25-36 Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear

3 and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." 5 Announcements Happening TODAY New Birth. A rose has been placed on the altar in honor of Franklin David Lockhart, born on November 25, He is the son of Chris and Sarah Lockhart; the brother of Iris and Fletcher Lockhart; and grandson of Richard and Claudette Obenschain. Healing Prayer during Service today. Laying on of Hands and prayer for Healing will be offered during Communion at all services today, the first Sunday of the month. To receive healing prayer, please come to the Nativity Chapel after you receive the bread and wine of Communion. Advent Lessons and Carols: Sunday, December 2 at 5pm. Ring in the Season of Advent with Trinity s traditional candlelight Lessons & Carols service sung by the Trinity Choirs. Reception to follow. A feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines! TODAY is the Advent Lessons and Carols Concert! Reception following, so bring a contribution of savory or sweet finger food to McCracken Hall starting at 4:30 p.m. Please sign up with what you plan to bring using the signup sheet at the back of the church. Christmas Eve Outreach Dinner Sign Up Sheets are now located at the back of the church. This wonderful ministry continues this year and there is a place for YOU to be involved! We need volunteers for a wide variety of tasks, donations of food, and servers. Please stop this morning and see how you can help! Be sure to include your phone number in case we need to contact you. Many hands make the task lighter For many of our guests this is the only Christmas Celebration they will have. PLEASE NOTE: we will be doing ONE seating at 1:30 p.m. rather than two. We hope to allow our volunteers more time for family activities on Christmas Eve and to prepare for the services that evening. Questions? Christmas Eve Outreach Dinner Gift Donations: It has been our tradition to provide a small gift for each person attending our Christmas Eve Outreach Dinner. At the back of the church is a display with an envelope you can use to place your gift in the offering. You may also simply write a check and indicate in the memo line, Christmas Eve Outreach Gifts. Donations can also be mailed to the church office clearly identified for this fund. We anticipate persons to attend the meal and our goal is a $10.00 gift for each attending. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Donations are due for this fund by DECEMBER 16 th to allow time to purchase gifts. Giving Tree: The giving tree is at the back of the church decorated with gift tags listing gift items requested for persons residing at Ritenour Rest Home. When you take a gift tag please sign it out on the form posted next to the tree. All gifts should be wrapped and dropped off in the church office copy room or under the tree by Sunday, Dec. 16. Please securely attach the tag to the gift. Alternatively, if you will be out of town or too busy, you may donate funds and a volunteer will choose a tag from the tree and do the shopping and wrapping for you! Please make checks out to Trinity Episcopal Church with "Giving Tree" on the memo line. All funds must be received by Monday, December 10. Happening this week Spaghetti Supper and Taize Service Tuesday! The spaghetti supper supports the youth mission trips to Honduras. The supper begins at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4. Suggested donation only $5. Any youth who can come to help out would be very much appreciated! Also join us for the Taize Service at 7:00 p.m. following the supper. Because the first Tuesday of January is New Year s Day there will be NO Spaghetti Supper or Taize in January. 5

6 Tom's Terrific Toffee and Grandma Auld's Scottish Shortbread are available by special order for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers. Homemade by Tom Howell and Margaret Pearson, these exceptional goodies are being sold to raise funds for the Trinity secondary school scholarship project in Copan, Honduras. This year we are offering four options: a decorative tin containing either a full 8" pan of toffee pieces or a baker's dozen of shortbread ($12 each box) and also a decorated gift bag containing 5 oz. of either toffee or shortbread ($5 each bag). You may place your order in the Trinity office or Margaret at mephome@gmail.com with your order details and contact information. We require payment with your order, which can be made at the church office. Orders are due by Friday, Dec. 7 and should be picked up at the Trinity office on Monday, Dec. 17 through Thursday, Dec. 20. Happening next Sunday Christmas Pageant: Sunday Dec.9 th at 11am. Come dressed in your costume and be prepared to leave your costume at the end of the service. Godly Play class will meet in their classroom before pageant and walk over together with their teachers. Full cast rehearsal (ages pre-k through high school) on Saturday, Dec. 8 th from 10-11:30am in the church. Costumes will be distributed at this rehearsal. The vestry election will take place at each service on Sunday, December 9. Ballots will be available at the back of the church. Please contact the office by Thursday, December 6 if you need an absentee ballot. Other Vestry Announces Change in Size: At its regular meeting on November 19, the Vestry of Trinity Church approved a policy to set Vestry membership at twelve members elected to three-year terms and one member selected at random for a one-year term. This will reduce the Vestry from its current size of eighteen elected members and one randomly selected member. This policy will take effect with the next Vestry election. Calling All Altar Guild Members: We will be decorating the Church for Christmas immediately following the 11:00 service on Dec. 23. Please join us (and bring a friend)! On December 16, MIRA, an early music ensemble will present their Christmas concert, including medieval carols and motets, Behold, Glad Tidings, at 5pm. This concert will also be offered in Charlottesville on Friday, December 14 at 7:30 in the Holy Comforter Catholic Church, and in that performance the Ceremony of Carols will be included. Both concerts will request donations to cover the costs. Call for more info. End of the year gifts: Please remember that Trinity operates on a cash basis and contributions can only be considered as being given in 2018 if they are received in our office by December 31. For stock transactions, the shares must have been transferred to our brokerage account by the end of the year. We encourage you to take care of your end-of-year giving before the last day of the year! Christmas Gifts for Foster Children: Our Sunday school classes are again participating in the Foster Child Christmas Gift program. Each class will sponsor a foster child s Christmas gift wish list. Lists will be distributed soon. Please bring your unwrapped gift and join us on Dec. 16 th during Sunday School for our gift wrapping party on the lower floor of the Parish Hall. Christmas Flower Gifts: Funds given are used to purchase the flowers for the Christmas services and to fund raise for the Altar Guild Ministry. Gifts may be given as a memorial, or to honor a loved one. There is no set monetary fee. If you would like to make a donation, please use envelopes found on the table at the back of the church or in 6

7 the copy room of the Parish House or submit your memorial via our online form. Go to our website, then hover over the menu heading of Giving and choose Memorials for Christmas Flowers from the drop down menu. You may then send your donation by mail or give online via the link on the online form. Please return your gift no later than Monday, December 10.
