1 THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT The Holy Eucharist Rite I March 24, :00 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON From the blazing bush God calls Moses Exodus 3:1-15 Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, "I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up." When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then he said, "Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." He said further, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Then the LORD said, "I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt." But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" He said, "I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain." But Moses said to God, "If I come to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say to them?" God said to Moses, "I AM Who I AM." He said further, "Thus you shall say to the 3

4 Israelites, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" God also said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you': This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL PSALM Deus, Deus meus Psalm 63:1-8 The congregation repeats the Refrain after the choir or cantor and again after each group of verses as indicated. 1 O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; * my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a barren and dry land where there is no water. 2 Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, * that I might behold your power and your glory. REFRAIN 3 For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; * my lips shall give you praise. 4 So will I bless you as long as I live * and lift up my hands in your Name. REFRAIN 5 My soul is content, as with marrow and fatness, * and my mouth praises you with joyful lips, 6 When I remember you upon my bed, * and meditate on you in the night watches. REFRAIN 7 For you have been my helper, * and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice. 8 My soul clings to you; * your right hand holds me fast. REFRAIN THE SECOND LESSON Do not desire evil 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play." We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty- 4

5 three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. The Word of the Lord. Glory be to thee, O Lord. There were some present who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them--do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did." Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?' He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'" The Gospel of the Lord. Paul Nancarrow THE NICENE CREED Said by all We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, 5

6 and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. THE HOLY COMMUNIONI THE OFFERTORY The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. 10 Announcements Special announcement from the Rector: I am planning to retire from Trinity in September, after 11 years as your rector and 33 years in parish ministry. While Lee and I are looking forward to a new chapter in our life and ministry, we are very sad to be leaving Trinity and Staunton. We will keep you in our prayers, and we ask for yours, as we all make this transition. And there is much good ministry for us to do together in the next six months! Fr. Paul Happening TODAY Bread for World s 2019 Letter Writing Campaign: Trinity is joining in this annual campaign to urge our government to continue to support programs that address the issues of hunger and poverty, both here in the United States and throughout the world. This year s campaign is focused on nutrition for pregnant women and young children. We ask that you support this effort by taking time to send a personal letter to each of our area s congressional representatives urging their support of US and global nutrition programs. To make it easy for you, we have a letter writing table set up in McCracken hall which provides paper, pens, envelopes, addresses for our representatives, and sample letters and information. The table is available on today and next Sunday from after the 7:45 service until 15 minutes after the end of the 11:00 service. We will even apply postage and put in in the mail for you. The Godly Play class will sing and greet at the 8:45 service and greet at the 11am service today. Extra Funds Needed for SACRA (Staunton Area Church Relief Association): The funds we are currently holding are pretty low. We appreciate any contributions that you can make. Checks may be made payable to Trinity Church, with SACRA in the memo line. You may use the envelopes in your pew and place in the offering plate. Thank you for your generosity to those in need! Practicing Lent: Lent is a season for special spiritual practices, as we prepare to celebrate Easter. Spiritual practices come in all sizes and shapes. During this Lenten program we will explore some basic spiritual practices we can share. Our third program Play Practice is on March 27 at Allen Chapel AME Church, 936 Sudbury St, Staunton. How do we experience God in the joy of playing together? Each program begins at 6:00pm with a potluck supper. Bring anything you like! and attach a description for those who have special dietary needs or fasting for Lent. After supper we will introduce each practice and then we ll practice together. All are welcome to this practice of Beloved Community! 10

Pre-School through Fifth Grade age children get ready for the annual Easter Egg Hunt held on Easter Day Sunday, April 21 st at 10:30am. To facilitate happy hunting, this year we will stagger the starting time for the children. Meet in McCracken Hall with your Easter basket, on the main floor in the Parish House, for short instructions on where to hunt and then off you go into the Churchyard! Happy Hunting! Easter Flower Gifts and Memorials: Before Easter, the Altar Guild collects donations to purchase the flower decorations for the Easter services and to raise funds for the altar guild ministry. Gifts may be given in memory or as a thank offering. There is no set monetary fee. Each person gives out of the generosity of their heart. If you would like to make a donation, please use an offering envelope found at the back of the church, in the Parish House copy room, or submit via our online form. Go to our website, then hover over the menu heading of Giving and choose Easter Flower Gifts from the drop down menu. Please return your gift to the Trinity office no later than Sunday, March 31. We are unable to accept submissions after this date. Spring is here, and Easter is not far away! For those with pledge offering envelopes, you will notice a special "green" envelope in your box for Easter Offering, April 21, This envelope is not to be meant for your pledge offering. There is a second, yellow envelope next to it with the same date as April 21, Please note that this green envelope is an additional offering for those that wish to contribute on Easter morning, and is always designated to our "General Fund". 11
