THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT The Holy Eucharist Rite I December 23, :00 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

VOLUNTARY Variations on Es ist ein Ros entsprungen Gerald Near (b. 1942) WELCOME THE ENTRANCE RITEI The people stand to sing the Processional Hymn, and remain standing through the Collect of the Day. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Come, thou long expected Jesus Stuttgart Hymnal 66 OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. THE COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. SUMMARY OF THE LAW HEAR what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. SONG OF PRAISE Sung by all Blessed be the God of Israel Thornbury Hymnal 444 2

Paraphrase of the Song of Zechariah (Canticle 4, BCP p. 50) THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. We beseech thee, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by thy daily visitation, that when thy Son Jesus Christ cometh he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON From Bethlehem comes a ruler Micah 5:2-5a But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

THE GRADUAL CANTICLE Sung by the choir Magnificat Canticle 3 Setting: William Crotch ( ) My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. THE SECOND LESSON I have come to do your will Hebrews 10:5-10 When Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, 'See, God, I have come to do your will, O God' (in the scroll of the book it is written of me)." When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), then he added, "See, I have come to do your will." He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel. SEQUENCE HYMN Savior of the nations, come Nun komm der Heiden Heiland Hymnal 54 4

THE GOSPEL Blessed are you among women / My soul magnifies the Lord Luke 1:39-55 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord." And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The people are seated for the Sermon. THE SERMON The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People. The Rev. Paul Nancarrow THE NICENE CREED Said by all We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one 5

baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE After each intercession We pray to thee, O Lord: Amen! Come, Lord Jesus. In the petition for the sick, the people join in naming those with special needs. Alex, Ben*, Betsy*, Carol*, Diana, Hugh, Katherine, Kendall, Kevin, Lynn*, Michael, Waverly, Robert Ambler, Lash Barksdale, Peg Belden*, Kenneth Bond, Betsy Brown, Martin Brown*, Wendy Brown, Libbey Buckley*, Patti Burtner, Eddie Carter, Davison Chapman, Pat Clark* Final intercession Lifting our voices with all creation, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To thee, O Lord. Concluding Collect O Root of Jesse, who arises as a sign among all peoples, in whose presence kings stand silent and nations bow in worship, come and deliver us, and tarry not. Glory be to thee for ever. Amen. Gracious God, for one hundred years you have guided and sustained the mission and ministry of this Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. As we prepare for another century, stir up your life-giving Spirit in our congregations to revive and renew us for the spreading of the Gospel: Draw us out among our neighbors and help us understand the deep longings of their hearts. Guide us forward so that we may be leaven for the world; a gathering strong for service and glad in praise; and a people listening and responding to your presence; through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and steadfast companion. Amen. The people kneel for the Confession. CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION Confession said by all YE who do truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling. All kneel. ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; 6

for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE All stand The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. THE HOLY COMMUNIONI THE OFFERTORY The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy.
