THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY: THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST The Holy Eucharist Rite I January 8, :00 am Welcome! We are glad you chose to worship with us today and invite you to participate fully in our service. In the Parish House Children are always welcome in the church for all or part of the service, but should you want to use it, nursery care is available in the Parish House building, around the left side of the church. Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. To receive the wine, help the server by guiding the chalice. If you prefer, you may dip (intinct) the bread in the wine chalice. If you wish to receive a blessing, or only bread, simply place your hands across your chest when the priest or server comes to you. Children are welcome to receive communion at the discretion of their parents. Wherever you are in your faith journey, we welcome you at Trinity. God s grace sustains us as we strive to know, love and serve others in our daily lives. Thank you for worshiping with us.

VOLUNTARY Three Carols for Epiphany Christopher Uehlein Greensleeves Nu Sijt Willekome Three Kings of Orient WELCOME THE ENTRANCE RITEI The people stand to sing the Processional Hymn, and remain standing through the Collect of the Day. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Songs of thankfulness and praise Salzburg Hymnal 135 OPENING ACCLAMATION THE COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. SUMMARY OF THE LAW HEAR what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. CANTICLE OF PRAISE Sung by all The Third Song of Isaiah (Surge, Illuminare) Tone 5 BCP p. 87 2

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan didst proclaim him thy beloved Son and anoint him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with thee and the same Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. 3

THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON The servant of the Lord brings justice Isaiah 42:1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street. A bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by all Afferte Domino Psalm 29 Chant: Edward J. Hopkins Anglican Chant is sung in speech rhythm. The top notes are the melody sung by the congregation. The ticks ( ' ) in the text correspond to the bar lines in the music. A line over two or more syllables or words indicates that those syllables or words are to be sung to one note. Two dots ( ) above a syllable indicate that the syllable is to be sung to two notes. A dash ( ) before a line of text indicates that the first note (half note) of the chant is to be omitted. In the case of double chants (14 measures), a dagger ( ) before a verse indicates that the verse is to be sung to the second half of the double chant. 4

THE SECOND LESSON Jesus ministry after his baptism Acts 10:34-43 Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel. SEQUENCE HYMN "I come," the great Redeemer cries This Endris Nyght Hymnal 116 THE GOSPEL Revelation of Jesus as God s servant Matthew 3:13-17 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The people are seated for the Sermon. THE SERMON The people stand for the Renewal of Baptismal Vows and the Prayers of the People. Paul Nancarrow THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS The Book of Common Prayer, p. 292 Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? 6

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. MAY Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE After each intercession: Let us worship the Lord. Lord give us the blessing of peace. In the petition for the sick, the people join in naming those with special needs. Charles Jordan, Ruth Jordan, Illa Judd, Lolo Kable*, Cindy & Brian Killough, Jean Kivlighan*, Jeannie Lee*, Sally Lovejoy*, Preston Mayson*, Peter Meyers, Hugh Mitchell, Susan Rehfield*, Tanner Rosebrook, Dan Schmidt, Kim Shelton, John Shuster*, Jackie Sprouse*, Nancy Stuart*, April Temple*, Donna Vazquez, Brooks Wheary, Bobby Wilfong 7

Final intercession Remembering the blessed Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To thee, O Lord. Concluding Collect Holy One of Israel, thou breathedst across the waters of creation: Accept the prayers we offer on this joyful feast, lead us by thy Spirit through water and blood, and quench our thirst at the table of thy Son. Glory be to thee for ever. Amen. The people kneel for the Confession. CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION Confession said by all MOST merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE All stand The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. THE HOLY COMMUNIONI THE OFFERTORY The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving. OFFERTORY ANTHEM 8 The Baptism of Christ Michael Bedford Jesus autem hodie regresus est a Jordane. (Today Jesus returned to the Jordan.) When Jesus Christ baptized was, the Holy Ghost descended with grace; the Father s voice was heard in this place: Hic est filius meus, ipsum intende. (This is my Son, listen to him.) There were three Persons and one Lord, the Son baptized with one accord, the Father said this blessed word: Hic est filius meus, ipsum intende. Now, Jesu, as thou art both God and man, and were baptized in from Jordan, at our last end we pray thee, say then: Hic est filius meus, ipsum intende.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD & THE FRACTION ANTHEM: AGNUS DEI Sung by all Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena Healey Willan Hymnal S 158 PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS Said by all WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather 11

up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. MINISTRATION OF COMMUNION All are welcome to come to the altar. There is a place set here for you. Gluten-free wafers are available on request. Baptized Christians may receive Communion. Those not yet baptized may receive a blessing. The ushers will guide you forward. ANTHEM DURING COMMUNION I wonder as I wander John Jacob Niles I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky. When Mary birthed Jesus, twas in a cow s stall, With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all; But high from the heavens a star s light did fall, And the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, A star in the sky or a bird on the wing, Or all of God s angels in heaven for to sing, He surely could have it cause he was the King. I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on ry people like you and like I. HYMN DURING COMMUNION Sung by all, seated Christ, when for us you were baptized Caithness Hymnal 121 SENDING FORTH OF THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS At the conclusion of communion, the Eucharistic Visitors go to the altar rail. We send you out to share Communion this day. May you carry the prayers of all of us as you take this sacrament of Christ s presence. May those who receive it from you be strengthened and encouraged in that community we have together in our Lord Jesus Christ. THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER Said by all, standing Let us pray ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. THE EPIPHANY BLESSING MAY Almighty God, who led the Wise Men by the shining of a star to find the Christ, the Light from Light, lead you also, in your pilgrimage, to find the Lord. Amen. 12

MAY God, who sent the Holy Spirit to rest upon the Only-begotten at his baptism in the Jordan River, pour out that Spirit on you who have come to the waters of new birth. Amen. MAY God, by the power that turned water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana, transform your lives and make glad your hearts. Amen. AND the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen. 15 What Keeps You Up at Night: Join us for the 2017 Sunday Adult Series 10am in McCracken Hall. First up (Jan 8 & 15) are sessions about communication. Roger Watson (Publisher) and David Fritz (Editor) of The News-Leader will be with us to lead a discussion about current and future media: pressures, issues, decisions, electronic v print, Twitter v standard media, local v nationally owned, etc. What would you do if your job was to deliver the real news to our citizens? We hope this will not devolve into media-bashing, though ideas and fair criticism may be appropriate. We need to understand these things, particularly as communication becomes more varied, but not necessarily better. Watch the weekly bulletin notes for details about future speakers and facilitators. February Newsletter Deadline: Newsletter article submissions are due the 15th of January. Please your submissions to communications@trinitystaunton.org. Trinity College with Anne Hanger: Wednesdays, January 18, 25 & February 1, 4-5 p.m in the Gooch Room (second floor). Juliet Benner's Contemplative Vision: A Guide to Christian Art and Prayer challenges the reader to see how God unveils himself in Scripture as seen through the eyes and hands of gifted artists. Each week we will examine a different painting along with the scripture it relates to and learn how to expand our ability to use physical seeing as a doorway to spiritual seeing. We will focus on the text of the book s second section, Transforming Vision. Discussion questions will be enhanced with some background material on the artists, their work and the creative process. Purchase of the book is optional. Homemade Chili for Super Bowl Sunday, February 5th: The ECW cooks are busy again - this time making mild homemade Chili. The frozen quart bags will be sold in McCracken Hall after each service on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5 th. Cost is $10.00 per quart with the proceeds going to the new Windows Book. All you have to do is add the toppings, corn chips and, if desired, extra spices to make it hotter! ECW Trip to Washington National Cathedral: As part of our Outreach Projects, the ECW has planned a trip to The Cathedral on Saturday, March 18, Open to our church family and friends, the chartered bus will leave Staunton at 8:00am. We will attend the Noon Communion Service, tour the Cathedral and visit the Cathedral Shop. Please bring your lunch because there will not be enough time to eat in the restaurant. We will depart at 2:00 and arrive home before 6:00pm. Cost is $35 per person. Deadline to sign up is January 31 st. After that, we will be inviting our friends from Emmanuel, Allen Chapel and others to go. Payment is due to Laurie Clements by Sunday, February 12 th. Make checks payable to Trinity with Cathedral Trip in the Memo. Sign-up Sheets are in the back of the church. Any questions, please contact Lilchy Huffman lilchy0127@aol.com or Carter Hannah cnghannah@ntelos.net. The Emmanuel Centering Prayer group meets at 5:30 each Sunday beginning January 8. Typically, we have a 20 minute period of silent prayer followed by a short discussion. Currently we are reading together Cynthia Bourgeault's Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening. You do not have to have a copy of the book, nor do you have to read ahead. Centering Prayer is simply silent prayer in which we place ourselves in God's presence and rest there. It extends and supports "active" prayer in which we use words to praise, thank, and petition. Many have found Centering Prayer to be a powerful path to experiencing the spirit of God within us. Everyone is welcome to join us in the "Bride's Room" (the small room through the door at the back of the church). If you have questions, Jim Lott ( ) or Rose Jensen ( ) will be happy to try to answer them. A Message from Bishop Mark: Our diocese s annual St. Nicholas Day Appeal is one significant way that we can adjust our focus to the mission that the Son of God ushers into our world. This year, twenty percent of donations made in 2016 will be given to help complete the Sharon Bryant Memorial Garden at St. Paul's, Bear Mountain, in our diocese. Eighty percent will be given to the Episcopal Deanery of Central Plateau in the Diocese of Haiti. 15
