3 August 28, 2016 St. Barbara Parish Page 3 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Pace e Bene! (Italian for Peace and blessings!) I am practicing my Italian for our upcoming parish pilgrimage to Italy, where a group of us from the parish and beyond will be attending the Canonization ceremony for Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta next week. As I joyfully anticipate this wonderful upcoming event of going to Rome, I am filled with a constant flow of thoughts, appreciation, and prayers for, and about Blessed Mother Teresa. I would love to share these reflections with you, but at a later time. However, the readings today speak to us of certain inferences of the gift of her life, and the call of ministry, to serve Christ in the poorest of the poor, but also to find Christ there in the most human of conditions. What can we call this seeking for the divine humanness of our common dignity? We call this humility! I believe there is a humility in holiness and a holiness of humility. In humility, we are invited and given the opportunity to come closer to the human face of God and consequently in doing so, into an entirely new moment of grace. Our first reading today from the Book of Sirach speaks specifically about this, where the author encourages us: My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself the more, the greater you are So I wrote this little poem with that in mind: Humble yourself the more, the greater that you are. Book of Sirach 3:18 I think I have the right to ask, Do you have a song that you have not sung? Are there unsung, unspoken, yet unheard melodies, murmuring for your voice? Is there a harmony in your soul, trying to serenade soul music into crescendo? Humbly welcome the unsung song, planted soulfully there for you to sing. God is good, holding conductor s baton, orchestrating stemming lips and insufficient sound, into divine harmony. For Jesus said, So then let your song be sung. For God has given you song-birth to your soul as a kind of first fruits. Welcome the song-birth that is planted in you, orchestrating the Father of Lights, in whom there is no diminishing of shadow. In our Gospel reading we are reminded that we have been invited to a wedding banquet. What joy should fill our hearts, that we invited are and have been included in the wonderful outpouring of love. However, Jesus tells us what should be our perspective and place at this banquet. That is, we are not to be the one putting ourselves first, but rather putting ourselves in the place that is unrecognizable as seeking a place of honor. In this preparing of the banquet, the honor will be given to those who can gratefully accept the place of obscurity, for in this place they will be lifted up to honor of humility. This speaks so much to me of Blessed Mother Teresa, by her life witness, and in her call and service of Christ; to the Church, the People of God, and and the whole of humanity. It was she who is not being recognized and honored, and calling us to do the same, to recognize the disguising face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor. As this parable says, I will invite the poor, the cripple, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be, because of your inability to repay. For everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, but the one who humbles themselves will be exalted. Today we are asked to sing a new song. Humbly welcome the unsung song that is planted soulfully for you to sing. So let your song be sung. For God has given you song-birth to your soul, as a kind of first fruit. Welcome the song-birth that is planted in you, orchestrating the Father of Lights in whom there is not diminishing of shadow. As we gather around the table of the Lord, this banquet of blessings, may we all know that we all are invited to the place of honor, which is the holiness of humility. The table is set. You are here. Thank you for coming to share in the banquet of blessing. Here, all are one in the sharing of love. I am your brother! Fr. Larry, O.F.M.

4 Page 4 St. Barbara Parish August 28, 2016 Prepare for Next Sunday s Liturgy September 4th ~ Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading Wisdom 9:13-18b Who can ever know God s counsel unless God gives wisdom and sends the Holy Spirit from on high? Responsorial Psalm Psalm 90 In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. 2nd Reading Philemon 9-10, Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus, not as a slave but as a brother. Gospel Luke 14:25-33 To be a disciple of Jesus one must carry one s own cross and renounce all possessions. Reflection on Next Sunday s Liturgy of the Word I n next Sunday s Gospel Jesus tells a great crowd the cost of discipleship. To be asked to turn their backs on their nearest and dearest certainly got their attention. Jesus was not asking people to be cold and to turn away from family. He was saying that when even loved ones turn hostile, disciples have to make a choice. Jesus insists that following him means taking up one s cross. The cross will mean different things in people s lives. Whatever the suffering, it should be accepted bravely. To follow him means to follow all the way. Jesus is asking, Can you afford to follow me? Life Focus Name any way that a commitment to follow Christ has affected your decisions. Who has been faithful to you at a real personal cost? Name some aspects of your life that might get in the way of following God. Relate an experience when it was difficult to be Catholic in today s world. Did You Know...? Gregory the Great, Pope & Doctor Feast Day: September 3 C oming events cast their shadows before: Gregory was the prefect of Rome before he was thirty. After five years in office, he resigned, founded six monasteries on his Sicilian estate, and became a Benedictine monk in his own home at Rome. Ordained a priest, he became one of the pope s seven deacons, and also served six years in the East as papal nuncio in Constantinople. He was recalled to become abbot, and at the age of fifty was elected pope by the clergy and people of Rome. He was direct and firm. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many services, emptied the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards in northern Italy and to care for persecuted Jews, as well as victims of plague and famine. He was very concerned about the conversion of England, sending forty monks from his own monastery. He is known for his reform of the liturgy, for strengthening respect for doctrine. Whether he was largely responsible for the revision of Gregorian chant is disputed. Gregory lived in a time of perpetual strife with invading Lombards and difficult relations with the East. When Rome itself was under attack, it was he who went to interview the Lombard king. An Anglican historian has written: It is impossible to conceive what would have been the confusion, the lawlessness, the chaotic state of the Middle Ages without the medieval papacy; and of the medieval papacy, the real father is Gregory the Great. His book, Pastoral Care, on the duties and qualities of a bishop, was read for centuries after his death. He described bishops as physicians whose duties were preaching and the enforcement of discipline. In his own preaching, Gregory was skilled at applying the daily gospel reading to the needs of his listeners. Called the Great, Gregory has been given a place with Augustine, Ambrose and Jerome as one of the four key doctors of the Western church. - from Saint of the Day St. Anthony Messenger Press

Does it make you a better person to be chosen first for a team or some other honor? Why or why not? Keeping Our Children Safe Predators Play Games, Too Pokémon Go and other popular cell phone games attract kids and adults of all ages, but not everyone who plays is doing it for fun. Some predators use online games as a way to connect with potential victims and find out where they re playing. It is important to teach kids not to share locations online with anyone they don t know in real life (anyone who is not a trusted friend, sibling, relative, etc.), and take steps to disable location-sharing features on cell phones and devices if possible. For more information, visit: strangers-and-predators1. Please contact Alex Turcios in the Parish Office for information on the parish s Safeguard the Children Committee ( x118).
