About the Current Situation of the Church Tuesday, August 22, 2006, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman, announced the debut of a new section on the Orthodox Church in America web site [ that will enable interested individuals to submit questions and obtain answers regarding the financial situation of the Church. "The objective of this new feature will be to initiate and continue a dialogue between the faithful of the Church and the central Church administration," Metropolitan Herman said. "All questions are welcome, and we will attempt to the best of our ability to provide answers in an open and timely manner. "Protodeacon Peter Danilchick will respond to questions and obtain answers from appropriate members of the administration," Metropolitan Herman continued. A deacon of 31 years and a corporate executive with 33 years professional experience, Protodeacon Peter also has served F.O.C.A. Sports Tournament Schedule as a trustee of various Church institutions and organizations, including Saint Vladimir's Seminary, Crestwood, NY. He is the author of "Best Practice Principles for Financial Accountability" proposed to the OCA Metropolitan Council and introduced on a working basis in the Church administration. "It should be recognized that we are still in the midst of investigations and audits, and that not all can be revealed at this time," Metropolitan Herman concluded. "In fact, we should note that there very likely will be information that cannot be revealed in this venue in any event, due to legal and privacy concerns. But every attempt will be made to answer questions as completely -- and honestly, in any case -- as possible." Questions may be submitted to info2@oca.org and/or by clicking the appropriate link on the OCA home page at Answers will be posted in a special section of the site.

The attitude that prevails in this age of freedom is: It doesn t matter what I wear as long as I am there. This is not the mind of the Church from the beginning and is not in accordance with Church life. It is not in line with the tradition as handed over to us. In many Orthodox Churches throughout the world dress determines whether you enter the temple or not. In Russia, for example, a visitor approaching the church wearing shorts, short tight dresses and slacks or a woman with an uncovered head is not granted admittance into the temple. Is this being backward or narrow minded? NO! The scriptures tell us that dress must be modest. It must be appropriate out of respect for being in the presence of the Lord and in the presence of others attending the liturgy. A woman s or man s dress should NOT be a distraction for others. In the letter to Timothy we read:...in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation...not with gold or pearls or costly clothing, but which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. (1 Timothy 2:9) Here St. Paul is speaking specifically about the liturgical gathering. There was a problem with the dress of some women who came into the church assembly. St. Paul addresses the issue of proper dress that confronted the various churches at his time. Today we need to remind our faithful since a problem is developing among Orthodox faithful. These words of St. Paul apply equally to men and women. It is clear that St. Paul, in his admonition, forbids dress that is not modest and becoming to be in the presence of the Lord and all his holy ones, the members of the church. Today, what is modest apparel? How do we dress with propriety and moderation? Modest apparel means that both men and women have their bodies covered so as not to attract the attention of others by what they wear or the lack of clothing. Attire that is not modest includes the present day SHORT SKIRTS AND DRESSES, SKIMPY TOPS FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, and SHORTS FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN AND SKIN TIGHT slacks, jeans and dresses. Sleeveless dresses, blouses and shirts are not church dress. We are called to show restraint in what we wear for church. Clothing that is not modest can be a distraction and even a cause of sin for our brothers and sisters because of what I freely choose to wear. An appropriate standard of dress for all the Liturgical services of the Church for Orthodox Christians is as follows: (1) Shorts are never proper attire for any Liturgical service. shorts are acceptable for children up to a certain age. A suggested guideline is up to fourth grad; (2) sleeveless dresses, blouses and shirts are unacceptable in the House of the Lord; (3) fashionable, present day short skirts and dresses are not acceptable for children, teens, or adults. What is fashionable for the world is not fashionable for God; (4) tight jeans, slacks, shirts, and blouses that accentuate body parts; (5) expensively lavish clothing that attract the attention of others and perhaps cause jealousy among some of the faithful should not be worn. Visitors and new comers who are not familiar with a proper dress for an Orthodox Church should not be shunned or admonished. We need to give them time to become acquainted with proper dress for an Orthodox Christian, and they need to be reminded gently and with love. FELLOWSHIP HOUR OCTOBER 2006 THRU MAY 2007 (Revised*)

Because of the love and generosity of so many of you, this project has continued to bring special Christmas joy to hundreds and thousands of children in many parts of our world year after year. We are told that the little gifts are much anticipated by the children. Last year, as part of our response to the hurricane victims, we were able to send 1,000 Christmas gifts and 627 boxes of chocolates to displaced families with children in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A thank you letter from the Rev. Edward Lavine whose office oversaw the distribution of the gifts, reads, The Christmas gifts and candy were a great Kris Kringle for so many! We really appreciate the prayers and the direct support you gave us during our hurricane relief efforts. Of the thank you letters and distribution reports that we have received from each of the recipients, the report of the director of a soup kitchen in Tirana, Albania who gave out some of our OCA gifts to children they were feeding, stated, As one can see, the joy of receiving a gift gives a child a special smile. Not just because they need a toy, but they feel pleased that someone cared for them by giving that present. These gifts provided by the Orthodox Church in America helped us to give many children the joy of the holiday season. Though the funding in 2005 did not reach the hoped for goal, ($67,536 was received with a goal of $90,000), Mrs. Kallaur, Project Coordinator, reported that by cutting some corners in the cost of items in the stockings, and with some start up funds available from the previous year, the number of gifts at $5 each, worked out to a little more than 15,000 gifts in Let s make this year s Christmas Stocking Project a successful one! Let s not disappoint the children! Youth groups, church schools, FOCA chapters, please continue with your wonderful fundraisers that enrich the entire parish community. Each and every contribution is valued and welcome.
