5 A Message From President Ainslie Hello Friends, It was so lovely to catch up with everyone at breakfast last week after a great break It felt so good to have a laugh! So today I am going to make a list of why I love being a Rotarian: 1. I can go to breakfast and have a laugh with a great bunch of friends 2. I am inspired by the things Rotarians do, like, how good was that Ludmilla project!!! 3. Rotarians are compassionate and generous and I like being around those kind of people 4. Rotarians think big and then act on their ideas, like Ending Polio, what a huge goal! And we are a part of achieving it. 5. I am a huge fan of bacon and breakfasts, especially ones where you can also win wine. 6. I love duck races and selling stuff at the markets for good causes 7. It feels good to give. 8. Rotarians make the world a better place. It is nice to remind ourselves that we Engage Rotary and Change Lives all the time!!!! Thank you Ainslie Service Above Self Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise Bulletin Page 3.

7 Our Guest Speaker We extend a warm Rotary welcome to Mary Hawkins who will talk to us about Disability Discrimination. Mary is a solicitor with the Darwin Community Legal Service, specialising in disability discrimination. She was admitted to practice in NSW in 1993 and has lived and worked in Darwin since Mary served for four and a half years as an elected Local Government Councillor in Ashfield NSW with a focus on working for disadvantaged members of the community. She has recently joined the board of the Forster Foundation for Drug Rehabilitation Inc. Territory and federal legislation prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in areas such as employment, provision of goods and services and education. Mary provides legal advice to people who consider that they have been discriminated against on the basis of a disability and undertakes casework where appropriate. Mary has several matters pending in the Anti Discrimination Commission involving discrimination in employment and discrimination in provision of goods and services. Mary works closely with community groups to lobby for improved services for people with disabilities. Currently Mary is assisting parents of deaf and hearing-impaired children to lobby for an increase in the number of Teachers of the Deaf, reduced at the end of 2013 from 5 to 4 Territory wide. Mary is also working with the National Disability Co-ordination Office to develop a seminar series on employment of people with disabilities. Mary will give an overview of the work of the Darwin Community Legal Service and her role as disability discrimination advocate Lend a Hand Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise Bulletin Page 5.

8 Rotary Awareness Make a special effort to become more familiar with Rotary its history and its diverse programs as we work together to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. JANUARY IS ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH Why I am a Rotarian? It is not for the money, It is not for the fame, It is not for any person gain, It is just for the love of fellow man It is just to lend a helping hand, It is just to give a little of self, It is to do something you can't buy with wealth, It is not medals worn with pride, It is for the feeling deep inside, It is the reward down in your heart, It is the feeling you've been part of helping others far and near, That makes you a Rotarian These days I am retired and am active in the Rotary Club of Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast and still enjoy the great sense of pleasure and reward I personally get from my Rotary Involvement. 14 India Free of Polio India declares vaccination program a success, looks to be 'polio-free' by March Key facts: Polio mainly affects young children Severe cases of polio can lead to paralysis and death The World Health Assembly embarked on a global eradication program in 1988 Australia was declared poliofree in 2000 In 2013 polio was endemic in only three countries: Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan "We look, say, to 1995 when the eradication program actually started to move, we were having more than 200,000 cases annually in India so it was a huge number finally eradicate, Rotary helps to provide and administer polio drops through its PolioPlus program. India's government has declared its success in eradicating new cases of polio is a "monumental milestone". A massive vaccination program achieved what was once thought impossible - no new polio cases in three years - a result that puts India on the verge of being considered polio-free. India will likely receive its official World Health Organisation (WHO) endorsement as being polio-free in March Build the Future Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise Bulletin Page 14.

15 Just for Fun The History of the Middle Finger: By Courtesy of Hattey Well, now...here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified. Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew'). Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the onefinger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.' And yew thought yew knew every thing! Act with Integrity Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise Bulletin Page 15.
