Fly Away Home By A. and Ariana H. Literary Essay #1/Charter based In the story Fly Away Home, by Eve Bunting, Andrew is hopeful and has not given up on life. First and foremost because he has not given up on having a place called home, in addition to be a normal kid, similarly the bird encouraging him in the end. He is strong, and can be admirable to others because of his strong personality. The most obvious reason, why Andrew hasn t given up on a place called home, was first shown by living homeless in the airport. There are many times in the text where he saves money, and doesn t compare himself to others. He hasn't given up on his own home, and won t. For instance when Andrew see s other people going home he questions his future. Will we ever have our own apartment again? I ask dad. I liked the way it was before mom died. After all, all of the people around Andrew and his father love each other and care for, each other despite their problems. Furthermore, Andrew is hopeful to be a normal kid, to make friends, and build new relationships. It shows from the beginning that Andrew is kind of alone, but it s not his fault. He has no choice, but if he did he would want to be normal. Dad and I, we don t talk to anyone. This just shows that he gives up things for himself and his father. An example, is he gives up friends so that he can have a home. Clearly, Andrew is hopeful because of the bird at the end coming out and being free. It was an inspiration to him. I think Dad and I will be here forever. Then I remember the bird. It took a while, But a door opened. And when the bird left, when it flew free, I know it was singing. This shows that everything around him is an inspiration because he is never going to give up. The bird is making him believe that this isn t the only life he will have. There is a saying. Written by Alexander Graham Bell. When one
door closes another door opens. The bird got out so we think that Andrew and his father, one day, will get out. Some people might say that he will act the same way that he acted in the airport, he is so used to this life it will take time to become a new person. However, he is only doing the things like hiding and breaking the law because he doesn t have a place to call home. In the book The One and Only Ivan by K. A. Applegate it states, It s harder than it looks. We can relate this to Fly Away Home because he might be doing something bad, but you don t know how hard it truly is to not have a home and to know that when you come home you might not have food. He lives a hard life, but the good thing is he doesn t take it for granted. But this may show people, and make them think that he has a normal life. Andrew, is hopeful and has not given up on life. First and foremost because of having a place called home, in addition to be a normal kid, and similarly because of the bird encouraging him in the end. There may not be hope in some people s hearts that they will get out, but Andrew and his father, their different. The One and Only Ivan Theme Based Literary Essay By A. Literary Essay #2/Theme Sometimes in life if you're doing something for yourself and someones is in your way then you stop trying, but if your doing it for someone else that you love you never stop trying. In the book The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate, It shows that by Ivan never stops trying. I think this because he stood up for Ruby, he never gave up on life, and he did stuff that he didn t want to for Ruby. First and foremost, Ivan loves Ruby so much that he stands up for Ruby. For instance, when it stats, in the text, Thump. Thump. Thump. I bounce off the walls. I screech and bellow. I beat and I beat and I beat my chest. I m angry, at last. I have someone to protect. This show how he is going to stand up for Ruby he was the best for her. He has someone that he knows if he doesn t do
something for her fast then she will be like him. She ll live in a cage and never get to be free. He doesn t want Ruby to be stuck in the domain like he was. Furthermore, Ivan loves Ruby so much that he never gives up on life. After Stella died Ivan could have shut Ruby out because everybody wanted Ruby, they didn t like him any more. Instead of being self-centered and excluding. He open up his heart and want to show that he loves her. He took her in, and loved her like his own kid. There is a saying that is, Put aside your differences and look at the big picture. He didn t look at their differences he look at the big picture. And the big picture is that they both want someone to love and someone to love them. He did everything to let Ruby have better life than he had. Finally, Ivan did stuff that he didn t want to for Ruby. I think this because he thought his life was so good, but what he didn t know was that he could have had a better life. In the book One for the Murphy s there was a quote that went, Sometimes you don t know what you want because you don t know it exists. He knew Ruby didn t know that their was a better life because she didn t know it existed. He didn t either until he opened his eyes. He went into the crate he was so scared. Last time he went into a crate he lost his twin sister and all of his family. He was so scared, but he knew if he showed it on the outside then Ruby would be scared so she wouldn t go in the crate. So he did stuff that he didn t want to for Ruby. Even though they got seperated. He wanted to do what was best for Ruby. He knew what was the best for Ruby. Some people might say an elephant and a gorilla can t be friends, they come from two different worlds. But think, just think all of the people the have come from different world, different places. When go through a breakup or someone died. Most people go to their animals or someone That has gone through the same thing so they can comfort each other. So, Ivan and Ruby both lost Stella they were there for each other so that they could comfort each other.
So, all in all, people sometimes make decisions that they might not want to make, but they do it to know that they will be safe, happy, and have a better life. Katherine Applegate wrote the book, The One and Only Ivan to demonstrate how Ivan never stopped trying. Life is hard sometimes, but there is always a way. Ivan is never going to stop until he finds that way. He never stopped and he never will. Ivan has someone to protect. The Lions of Little Rock & One for the Murphy s
By A. Literary Essay #3/ Compare and Contrast Many people take one look and if they don t like what they see then they just walk away. They ignore it. Don t judge a book by it s cover is a really big saying. In the two stories The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine and One for the Murphy s by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. For instance, both girls wanted to fit in. Carley wanted to fit in to the Murphy s, but inside she knew she never could, Carly lived one life that Carly is always running around. She thought it was just perfect. Then Carly realized that when she came in the Murphy s that Carly could be living a better life, with someone who loves you through everything that Carly has done or even gone through. Aside from Carley, Marlee wanted to fit in the world. She also wanted Elizabeth to fit in, but inside she just knew that Liz would never fit in. Segregation was a really big thing back then. Just because you look different or you act differently doesn t shouldn t mean that you have to be treated differently. Another good example, is that both of the girls had people judging them. Carly was judging herself, she was lowering her expectation. At some points she was telling herself the wrong things, like Mrs. Murphy didn t like her, but inside she knows that Mrs. Murphy loves her. Marlee wasn t having it any better. Marlee was getting judged not only by herself, but a little by society. Society was judging Marlee by not letting her only true friend be her friend. Marlee has a problem and she can t talk to anyone besides her family. Finally she found someone that she can talk to and the society won t let them be friends Both girls were putting herself down. Marlee had more than just herself putting her down. But the key thing is to not let the fact that something is judging you, hold yourself down low. Don t always look at the outside rather look what s on the inside. Anyone can look different, and get judged. If you judge someone then your might haves just lost a person that you really might have really like. In the story One for the
Murphy s Carley judges the Murphy s by the way that they act and how NICE they our. She thinks it all just a cover-up because her mom was never like this to her. Carly has missed out on a better life. On the other hand Marlee had a pretty good life, but she is really shy and quiet. Though she has a strong voice waiting to come out inside her. And she hated it how much people judge Liz by they way she looked. But she doesn t like the way she gets treated at all. So all in all, both books are really alike, but totally different. Many people take one look and if they don t like what they see then they just walk away. They ignore it. Don t judge a book by it s cover is shown in both of these book for example, One for the Murphy s and The Lions of Little Rock. Both Marlee and Carly both get judged by they way that they act and the way that they look. Most people would say that it s not ok to not judge a book by it s cover yet we see people doing that every single day. Think about it, is that what you do everyday? The Huge Disaster
By A. Narrative #1 It was a cool winters day and you could feel the tension in the air, but their was a slight breeze of happyness. Yep, today was my Aunt s special day. It wasn t like couldn t a birthday special, a little more important than that. MY AUNT WAS GETTING MARRIED!! I wait. I was 3 years old and I was pretty snappy for a 3 year old. Then my mom said,, come down here and pick out what dress you want to wear? I stop for maybe half a second. Not enough for my mom to realize that I had stopped, but I had. To me it fell like 3 hours. What?! I asked. If there is one thing that I know it is that my mom doesn t have a good fashion taste, for our generation. What dress do you want to wear? Mom asked again not very patient any more. I ran down stair to see the dresses. When I was little I used to love to get dress up make up and all. But to my surprise they were all plane. I don t like any of these dresses, lets go to the shop and get some other ones. I said acting like the person in charge. My mom looked at my aunt and then back at me. Uh sweetie. I look up at her, Your aunt already got you some. Well I don t like them. I said it in a voice that sounded like I was just saying it to say it. After hours of fighting my mom finally said, OK maya you can go pick out a dress of your own style.
I ran to the dressing room with a few new dresses, but then I saw the most beautiful dress I had ever seen. It was bright and so my style. I basically ran to the dress, I love it! I said. After i tried it on it fit perfectly I, loved it. Mom, look what I found. I said. On the outside it was all normal, but then it was too big around my chest. Sweetheart, My mom said, I think we should go into the kids section and look at one from there. After finding the perfect dress, which took 3 hours, we had go directly to the wedding so that my aunt could be there in time for the wedding. :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):) The room was so big I need a gps to find my spot so that I was time for the wedding I hear the music starting to play I ran down to my spot. Finally it was time for me to go. I raced out in front of my aunt just as she was walking down the eale. I dumped my bucked right in front of her. As I raced back to the edge where my cousin were all laughing at me. Why are you all laughing at me. I asked. Oh nothing. They all said at the same time. But then my cousin Sabrina couldn t hold it in any more she blurted out, You did it wrong you have to throw the petals. I huffed and puffed and then ran back out there. I technically did what my cousin, Sabrina, told me to do. I ran up in front of my aunt so that she had to stop, then to make the situation even better I through them in her face. When I came back to the bench she they asked me, Why did you that.
I was three and my excuse was, The petals were screaming for me to throw them at her. It s not my fault. I thought that my aunt was going to scream at me. I thought I heard a BOOM! And then she exploded. My aunt was face was as red as a tomato. But then it turned normal. I had never seen this before. At first I thought she was going to be really mad at me, but when she started to laugh I wasn t so sure she was my aunt anymore. The whole crowd started to laugh as I was looking around my I got cought on my aunt. She gave me a wink, but I didn't get it, at first. :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):) I met up with my aunt at the reception. Why did you wink at me? I asked. What?! My aunt said in the type of voice that you know that she is joking, Well lets just say you took off a lot of pressure off of me when you maked that one mistake and I started to laugh. That made them know that I like to have fun and that it is ok to mess up. So that if I fell it would be ok. When my aunt told me that it showed me that my aunt and I have a lot in common. When I grow up I want to be like my aunt. She is relaxed and goes with the flow. When something bad happens instead of making it worse, she makes it better. An example was that while ago a lot of thing that were bad happened. My grandpa had cancer, and was in the hospital, her husband had just died, a lot was going on for her. Yet, she came though. She was so flexible, when my grandpa was in the hospital she change her whole schedule and that was
really hard because when she came back she had to work late hour to make up the time. She flew all the way for San Diego, California just to comfort him, and to be with him and with my mom and my other aunt. This shows a lot about my aunt s personality and how she is always flexible. that is why when I grow up I want to be just like her. You could call her my hero.
Toby-Mac By: A. Narrative #2 I ran as fast as I could all the way home. It felt like I was even faster than the cars. I litte up I as ran into the house. Are you ready to go to the game? I asked my mom of breath. We re not going to the game tonight. My mom said. I thought that my whole life had fallen apart. What? Why can I go? Mom why do you have to make everything ten time worst. Why can t you be nice and cool like the other moms? I asked ready to explode. Do I have anything to do tonight? No, did I do anything to my sister? I asked myself. Nope. Then why? Why can I go? I asked not smiling anymore. I was ready to go bad cop on my mom very bad cop., please don t fuss anymore. My mom said, but the tone of her voice I could just tell she wasn t telling me something important., please get in to the car. Her voice went up high like it does when you get excited. Mom, would like to tell me something? I asked confused. She took a deep breath. No. My mom finally said. Just get into the car. Ok, but as much as you want me to be happy on what ever we our doing I wont be i promise I wont be happy. I said. My mom whispered something so quiet that I could only hear a little part of it. What! I said in that sassy voice that girls use when they re being rude. I as I got into the car to just get it over with. Right then I realized That my mom could stop but she didn t. I didn t take much time to think about it because right then my brain
went to the game. Maybe If we hurry I can still catch the last half of the game! I hope Lizzy won t get mad at me for being late. I thought to myself. Well coming late is better than not coming at all. Come on mom. I said. I coming. She said back. After drive for like 30 minutes, which felt like forever. I asked, Where are we even going? You ll find out when we get there. My mom said. I don t want to play anymore of your stupid games. Why can t you be cool and nice like all the other moms? I screamed at her. Well you don t have to anymore. We re here. She said in a soft and quiet voice But she wasn t eager to happy was gone all gone. What have I done i thought. My mind drifted back to the much earlier time when I was riding my bike up the driveway curb. All of a sudden I turned the corner to turn up my driveway. I turned such a sharp turn that I fell off my bike. When I managed to get up, finally, my legs, knees, and arm were all bleeding from the fall. I felt like i was going to die. It had been 10 minutes and nobody had come out to help me. But then my mom came running out with an emergency kit. Are you ok? I m so sorry I didn t see you before. My mom was saying. She could see the fear in my eyes. She start to comfort me. I was more scared than hurt. I just wanted to stop the blood. I came back to see her face still upset. I m sorry! I said. I don t know how much work you put into this or that you had to take work off or that you
had to pay for all the doggies food and for the doggie. Oh No! It is ok. You re right. My mom said. No I wasn t right to said that. I was being disrespectful. I said upset at myself A few hour later of thanking my mom and a little bit of crying to see all the dogs that were injured. Are they all going to be ok? I asked. When the shelter owner said no I felt a tear roll down my cheek. My next thought was Can I take them all home? I asked in a pleading voice. No. my mom said quietly. I ll take this one! I took a baby golden retriever. His small blue eyes were staring at me with no live in them. He was three month old. I was shocked how small he was. I know the second I held him that I would love the him to the end. His fur was soft and slick. He snuggle into the pit of my arm. Now what should we name him? I wondered. Michael, No, James, No, Jackson, No, Mac, No, Toby Yes! I said. But I like the name Mac. My sister said in a whiny voice. I guess we have our name. My mom said. We do?! My sister and I said. Toby-Mac. My mom said. At first my sister and I weren t total on board, but then the name start to become catchy and finally it stuck, it stuck like glue. Now everytime I see Toby I see a cute dog, but when I really look I see the relationship between me and my siste. How sometime you feel like you hate them, but in the end they
can be your best friend. When I was growing up my sister was older than me by two years. I would always run into the cabinets when I was crawling, but she would be there to stop me. Sometime though I wish was wasn t here, but if it was for her I would have been to the hospital like 3 million times.
The Threat By A. Narrative #3 Mom why am I in the hospital? I asked trying to speak. Well it's not anything bad. My mom said staying calm. The fear was just beginning come out. Then the doctor then came in she started talking then she stopped him. Why don't we go into the hallway. My mom whispered to him. They stepped out of the room, which was a curtain. They accidentally left the current a little bit open I heard them talking about me and if I was going to be ok. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ (3 hours earlier) Hey mom can I go over to Em s house. I asked. No. My mom said without even thinking about it. Why not? You didn t even that consideration into letting me go. I said, most of the times when I asked her I can make a no into a yes. I was still on the phone with Emily while my mom and I were having this big argument. No because you have to go to the hospital. My mom said like it was no big deal. Well it was a big deal that isn't something be calm about going to the hospital. What? I asked. You you never told me that.
My mom said, were you even listening to the doctor when he told you everything you need to know, from what was going to happen to you to when your appointment is. My mom looked down at me like she was more disappointed than ever before. But I don't want to go I'm going to Emily's house. I threw back at her. I ran out the door but my mom didn't talk even when asked me where I was going oh well my head started to have more doubt than ever before. I shook it off. Two minutes later I came home. What happened? My mom asked not even surprised. They weren't home. I had a feeling. Do I have to go to the hospital I asked. My mom just nodded her head. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Abdallah. A helper lady was ready to take me into the back. All I was able to think of was the huge percentage that I could die. My small 7 year old brain kept telling me that I was going to die. Abdallah. She called again. My mom stood up, Right here. I felt my stomach drop. I closed my eyes and start to stand up. Here I go. I thought to myself. All the people the real hurt way more than me. A tear rolling down my cheek. I swept it away hard and strong. Destruction brought me back to the time when I was 3 years old and
my grandma was in the hospital. I didn't quite get it, why my mom, grandpa, and all my aunts were crying. But now I do it all clicks together like a keychain. Now I'm more scared than ever before. I felt my legs shaking. They gave me some crazy gas. I tried to resist it, but I was out in a minute. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~, now that I m done talking to you mom you guys can go home. The doctor explained. What your mom should do for the rest of the two weeks is not for you to do any physical sport. I ate so much ice cream and popsicles these 2 weeks. I felt like I gained 30 pounds, but I only truly gained one pound but of course I burned it off. Girl Stolen
By A. Narrative #4 It was dark cold night and it was in the middle of winter. Emily Crocheburger s parents were gone and she was home lone, in huge mnten. She was sitting down in her room looking at videos and pictures on instagram. She had just recently posted picture of her marble collecting. Emily wasn't like most people she was kind of the kid that everyone made fun of and always got picked last. But then she her some tapping on the window she stopped and looked out. Nothing was there, except big chunk of land. She thought, It must have just been branch. She started to get goosebumps on her arms and legs. 3 minutes later she her the same tapping noises on her window. Then Scccrrreeeecchh! She jumped little then, she look out the window there was me standing outside her window just staring at her, with no life in his eyes. She pointed to the door and then signaled to come and open it. Her parents told her never to talk to strangers yet she still went to the door. When she opened it she smiled at her. She was nice handsome older men. Hello, he said. My name is Jason and I was wondering if Emily Crouchbuger, and where she is. I'm Emily and it is pronounced Crochebuger. Emily sid in soft but stern voice. I m ever so dearly sorry. He said. 19 wanted to show you my marble collection I have in my cr. As soon as he said this I knew something was fishy period yet I still can outside. He had dark black bin. While he was in the front or something I took peek in the back get glimpse of ws some duct tape bag and something lumpy with towel over it. She shoved me into the vn. Me still screaming my head off wishing for somebody to come and save me. I was shocked. I thought we had real connection. I told him in that fake voice that you know you just wanna get wy. Maybe my parents were right. I'm still young I shouldn't be here. I don't even know this man. I thought in my head. He drove for about 4 hours we ended up in the middle of the desert. I was shaking. I want to go home. I sid. Why do you hrss people like this they don't like it you don't like anymore. What do you get out of more trust, more money. Take me home I promise I won't tell anybody. The cops won't come after you. My parents our scred s spider. Everybody is looking for you. You know if you hurt me then they will know who to look for. You! No! I can't do that. I can't let you go free they would kill me. He said. Who I can help you. Just tell me everything is going to be ok. I said trying to comfort him. Why am I don t this? YOu just kidnapped me what am I doing. If I tell you then he ll kill both of us just leave me lone. I know what I'm doing. I'm older than you, just going to be little kid self. He said like he was so
mature. If you're so mature then how come you're kidnapping people for money. I said in smrt lec voice. Where are you taking me? Who is this behind the sick trick? Just tell me, I can save both of us. Just tell me. No you're going to tell the police. He said in the dark men voice. I won't I promise let me go please. I screamed. I m losing it. I m was going to start to kick and scream and hurt him, but then he let me go. Most of the time I would ask people why, but for once i didn t. I just ran, But of course there's a reason to everything. When I got out of the van, I was in the middle of the desert. Page 9 / 9
