1 Summer Schedule May 1 through August 31, 2017 We are located at Mercy Hospital Downtown, in the Marian Building near the corner of A Street on Truxtun Avenue. Look for the Welcome to Art for Healing sign near our front door on Truxtun Avenue. Art for Healing provides opportunities for art-making, writing, music and other creative experiences free of charge. It is our hope that each participant may become practiced in the skills of letting go, living in the moment, artful reflection and relaxation. All programs are led by experienced facilitators and are for persons 18 and older (unless otherwise noted) who are seeking a respite from stress or healthcare concerns. Register online at or call to register by telephone. We ask that you register for programs only one or two months in advance and only for programs you know you can attend. We require a minimum of 12 enrollees for most workshops and create waiting lists for many of our programs. If you cannot attend, please call to let us know as far in advance as possible. Thank you. 2 Ongoing Weekly Programs of the Heart Drop-in sessions Every Friday 11:45a.m.-12:45p.m. Drop in for a relaxed hour to connect with your heart using simple meditations. Connecting to the heart nourishes the immune system, reduces anxiety and increases the ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations. Attention to the heart opens a space for deep healing, returning us to the innate qualities of love and acceptance. If you wish, bring a sack lunch to enjoy from 11:45 to 12:00. Twenty-minute meditation begins promptly at 12:00, followed by sharing until 12:45. Facilitated by Tina Antonell. Drop-in sessions (Note: Large groups of six or more that plan to attend must make a reservation two days in advance of the Session) Every Wednesday (except for 3 rd Wednesday of Month) 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m. 3 rd Wednesday of every month 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Every Friday 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Choose your own activity. We provide the space and materials, or you can bring in your own project and immerse yourself in our calming environment. Play, experiment with polymer clay, paint, write, read, do beading, collage or listen to music. Drop in anytime, for 30 minutes, an hour, or however long you d like. Participants must arrive before 3:30p.m. if they wish to do an activity. Our doors close at this time. A materials donation of $5.00 per session would be appreciated, but is not required. 3 Tai Chi Tai Chi is the Chinese Internal Art that invites each participant to gently express meditative movement while experiencing a calm and soothing state of relaxation. With continued practice and guidance by the facilitator, circular and sequential moves invite all participants seated or standing to engage their mental focus and obtain an overall soothing state of well-being. Many participants improve circulation, balance, and increased mental and physical strength of the nervous system which encourages and provides a foundation of inner strength and flexibility of mind and body. Feel free to wear loose clothing that allows your joints to bend comfortably and flat shoes such as sneakers. A materials donation of $5.00 would be appreciated, but is not required. 4 Spiritual Cinema Sunday May 14, June 11, July 9 and August 13 at 2:00p.m A great film provides insight into our human experience by touching our emotions, causing us to ask questions and stir up provocative conversations. Do you have a desire to watch feature films that bring us stories that touch your heart or truly matter? Are you interested in viewing powerful uplifting dramatic films from all over the world? If so, join us for one or more of these films select Sunday afternoons. Facilitated discussion and conversation by various film lovers will follow each film. Sunday May 14 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2:00p.m. British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than advertised, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways. Sunday June 11 I Am Sam 2:00p.m. A mentally handicapped man fights for custody of his 7-year-old daughter, and in the process teaches his cold-hearted lawyer the value of love and family. Sunday July 9 Finding Dory 2:00p.m. The friendly but forgetful blue tang fish, Dory, begins a search for her long-lost parents. Dory, Marlin and Nemo embark on a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California's prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation center and aquarium. In an effort to find her mom and dad, Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI's most intriguing residents: Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Bailey, a beluga whale; and Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark. Deftly navigating the complex inner workings of the MLI, Dory and her friends discover the magic within their flaws, friendships and family. Sunday August 13 A Simple Plan 2:00p.m. When three blue collar acquaintances come across millions of dollars in lost cash, they make a plan to keep their find from the authorities but find complications and mistrust weaving their way into the plan. 5 Contemplative/Reflective Programs Magic in the Night Dreams and Healing (Two-part series) Thursday, May 11 & 18 1:00p.m.-3:30p.m. Dreams-- those fabulous and sometimes frightening movies of our night space have fascinated humans since ancient times. They have the power to tease and confuse, inspire and enlighten, infuriate and heal us. Understanding the dynamic language and guidance our dreams offer us for free every night has long been considered a dynamic path to personal and spiritual growth. We will learn how to incubate dreams, enhance our dream recall, capture and record dreams, and decode our unique dream style. Please bring a dream journal and at least one recent dream to explore. SoulCollage Circle Thursday May 4, June 1, July 6 and August 3 6:00p.m.-8:30p.m. This gathering is for anyone who has previously taken a SoulCollage Workshop and is searching for a dedicated group of individuals who want to continue growing in this process. It is especially powerful to review your SoulCollage cards to delve deeply into what they have to say. We can learn from these images over time. New ways to work with cards will be introduced. 6 Gathering of Men - In Search of Meaning, Direction and Purpose in Everyday Life Sunday- May 7 & 21, June 4 &18, July 2 &16 & August 6 & 20 6:30p.m.-8:30p.m. This is a gathering for men who are interested and willing to venture into the depths of self-exploration and discover new strategies for living and celebrating their masculine worth. A variety of creative methods such as rhythmic expression, story-telling, poetry, imaginative games, and discussion will be used to explore frontiers and to build community and solidarity over time. This is a group for men to be supportive of each other in their life journeys. Our intention is to live with integrity, be accountable, and celebrate all that is benevolent in our masculine nature. Discovering Our Own Recovery Tuesday, May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m. D.O.O.R. is a women s support group that meets every month and offers a safe place to talk about the many facets of an ongoing illness. Each week, we forget about illnesses, such as auto-immune disease, and check in to our emotions, how we have been feeling, and the opportunity to discuss what is going on with our health. We then discuss healthy lifestyle choices we can make and share supportive and encouraging books to read. Most importantly, we offer support to one another during difficult or challenging times. Registration is not required for these workshops. Facilitated by Sandy Hurtt and Kathy Bernardino. Meditation Flow (May be attended as single sessions or consecutively.) Thursday, June 22 & 29, July 6, 13 & 20 10:00a.m.-11:00a.m. A fun, in-depth exploration of the different modes of meditation practiced in the ongoing Meditation Flow class. Each week we will study and practice one of the four postures: Sitting Meditation, Standing Meditation, Walking Meditation, and Lying Meditation. Exploring our World in Relief Print (Three-part series) Tuesday, May 2, 9 & 16 1:00p.m.-3:30p.m. Participants will explore the world around them for subject inspiration, i.e. flowers, landscape, animals, still life, etc. This workshop will walk participants through the steps of linocut technique. Printing is always fun and the results can be very interesting and unpredictable just like life! A materials donation of $5.00 per session would be appreciated, but is not required. Mandala Making Thursday, May 11 & August 10 10:00a.m.-12:30p.m. Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means sacred circle. The circle has been an important visual symbol throughout human history, extending to the origin of the universe. Mandalas are thought to be holograms of the cosmos as well as maps of individual consciousness. This is why psychologist Carl Jung used them with patients in his work, as well as personally. Come allow yourself freedom of expression through color and form within the mandala. This style of art-making is a form of meditation, allowing deeper emotions to reveal themselves as you put color and shapes to paper. 8 Landscapes in Acrylic Saturday, May 27, June 24, July 22 & August 26 10:00a.m. 1:00p.m. Acrylic paints are vibrant, beautiful, and easy to use. In this enjoyable painting workshop, you ll learn how to mix and blend colors in acrylics, how to start exploring textures and brush strokes, how to paint landscape elements such as trees and mountains, and more. Iconography (Nine-part series) Thursday, June 1 July 27 12:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Iconography is the painting of icons, such as saints, in the Byzantine, Orthodox or Catholic Christian traditions. The facilitator will carefully guide you in learning this time-honored art. A keen eye and steady hand are the only skills you will need for this workshop series. This series will be a great opportunity to bring in unfinished pieces to catch up on. Please plan on attending all sessions. A one-time materials donation of $25.00 would be appreciated, but is not required for this series of workshops. This donation is to be given to the facilitator at the first session. Mixed Media Painting (Three-part series) Tuesday, July 11, 18 & 25 1:00p.m.-3:30p.m. Have fun and enjoy the expression of your inner artist. Explore acrylic painting to broaden or enhance your watercolor art. Both mediums are water based and complement each other. Art is always a reflection of life, and we can benefit from this exploration. Come play and allow your inner artist to soar! 9 Drawing (Two-part series) Wednesday, July 12 & 19 4:30p.m.-6:30p.m. Relax, create and enjoy pencil drawing. We'll begin with gray graphite pencils to learn to draw portraits and other subjects using shading and highlighting. We ll then use colored pencil techniques to layer and blend beautiful pictures. If you've drawn or doodled in the past, join us for a variety of drawings and fun. All skill levels welcome! A materials donation of $5.00 per session would be appreciated, but is not required. Pets in Pastel (Three-part series) Tuesday, August 1, 8 & 15 1:00p.m.-3:30p.m. Join us as we explore this very versatile medium. Pastels offer brilliant colors that can be easily blended--allowing you to discover your personal response to the various results. We will discuss color, texture, subject matter and composition, all to make your journey into pastels a satisfying adventure. We will focus on how to create animal portraits in pastel as the very nature of pastels lends itself to creating great hair and fur techniques. Its unique beauty, strength, and potential can help create whatever the mind can imagine. When working with beads, the process of creation and expression can take you to a higher state of consciousness, a place of healing, peace, and empowerment, if you allow the creative connection to flow. Crochet Monday, June 12 & August 7 1:00p.m. 3:30p.m. Crocheting can relieve daily stress, lower blood pressure, and manage chronic pain. New studies are exploring and applauding the health benefits of knitting, crocheting, and other rhythmic needlework. Crocheting can, once learned, cause a relaxation response similar to meditation. We are part of a network of a cappella choirs, a community of singers whose mission is to sing gentle songs for and with those at the threshold of life. Reflective Yoga Adaptive Chair Inclusive Thursday, July 13, 20 & 27 5:00p.m. 6:00p.m. Reflective Yoga is the intentional practice of connecting our entire being, body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is a spiritual discipline, much like prayer, fasting, and meditation. Yoga has the capacity to enhance our personal beliefs as well as shape positive and peaceful thoughts to receive new energy in spaces of daily challenge. These reflective yoga sessions include gentle yoga postures, breathing, and references for peaceful thinking. All are welcome to participate. Postures are performed either on a mat or in a chair. 13 Writing and Poetry Creative Journaling: The Wisdom and Power of the Non-Dominant Hand Saturday, May 6, June 3, July 1 & August 5 1:00p.m.- 3:00p.m. There is a deep knowing and insight that can be gained through the use of the non-dominant hand for drawing, painting, journaling, and dialoguing between the right and left hand. In this four-part workshop, you will learn a variety of methods to access this wisdom. Each session will be self-contained and will focus on a particular area of the brain to be accessed. For the most benefit, attending all sessions is recommended and encouraged. A materials donation of $5.00 would be appreciated but is not required. Your facilitator, Rose, has been through a yearlong training program with Lucia and has used this method extensively to benefit clients and workshop participants over the last 15 years. Session 1: A Current Challenge: Learn a creative way of exploring a current issue or challenge in your life. Session 2: Using the NDH to connect with your inner child and express feelings and needs. Session 3: Using the NDH to understand health and body issues. Session 4: Using the NDH to access different aspects of the personality. (Wise self, Nurturer, Protector, Critic, Perfectionist, etc.) Have our programs been helpful to you?
