Our classes are taught over several weeks to systematically introduce postures and develop strength and flexibility. Yoga 1: New to yoga? Begin your training with a balanced program of yoga stretches and postures that are accessible to almost any ability level. Yoga 2: Enhancements to basic postures are introduced. Various breathing exercises, subtler relaxation methods and deeper meditation skills are developed. Yoga 3: Practice new and more challenging postures to build endurance and flexibility. Explore pranayama and breathing exercises to increase energy and focus the mind. Gentle Yoga offers gentle exercises that can dramatically help those with joint pain or stiffness. This class draws upon content from the award-winning book Yoga: Mastering the Basics, by Sandra Anderson & Rolf Sovik, PsyD. (available in our bookstore). Bring focus to several aspects of yoga practice. Explore range of movement exercises, alignment fundamentals, and diaphragmatic breath training. Each class includes a guided relaxation and meditation. Beginners welcome! Fee: $84 (ID: YMB) Yoga Nidra with Tracy Mondays, Jan (3wks), 7-8:30pm While it may seem surprising to dedicate a yoga class to sleep, the key to yoga nidra is that it is a practice of sleeping with deep awareness. Yogic relaxation methods gradually lead to a softening of the tightness with which we hold ourselves. As relaxation deepens, it leads to the subtle ability to rest without losing consciousness. This class will review the specific relaxation methods leading to yoga nidra and then practice yogic sleep. Come away refreshed! Fee: $40 (S04) Living with Purpose In the New Year The Practice of Ahimsa (non-violence) with Kandy Saturday, Jan. 16, 9:30-11:30am Staying present and acting skillfully can be challenging in our day-today lives. Cultivating the fortitude to remain rooted in self-love and compassion for others requires that we align with our inner wisdom. They include self-control, spiritual inquiry, contentment, and good company (satsang). Interestingly, the sage Vashishta recommends satsang, good company, as the greatest source of spiritual growth. So bring your thoughts and questions about yoga/ meditation and join Rolf for an evening devoted to satsang, the company of inspired aspirants. WORKSHOP Soothing Inner Life through Meditation, Mind and Mantra Saturday, Feb 27, 9:30-noon; 1:30-3:30pm Yoga advises us to uplift the self by the Self. These are puzzling words at first, but in meditation they make perfect sense. They assure us that there is a joy and fullness in us that has the power to nurture and transform our lives. This workshop will focus on meditation practice on methods to awaken joy and explore the riches of inner life. The science of mantra is a fascinating aspect of this process and the workshop will include practice and discussion of general mantras available for everyone to use.
