WINTER 2008 HIGHLIGHTS Pranayama Karma Yoga WORKSHOPS: New Year s, Vinyasa, Chakras, Home Practice, Hip Openers Sample classes Registration Begins November 26 Body Image A few weeks ago as I was going through a stash of old VCR tapes I found in my basement, I ran across a talk show I had recorded in One of the segments was a satellite interview with Jamie Lee Curtis. If you don t remember her, she appeared in the movies Freaky Friday, Perfect, A Fish Called Wanda, and the Halloween horror series. At the time of the interview, Ms. Curtis was 43 and had just finished a children s book about self-esteem. She decided she wanted to address self-esteem in adult women as well, so she called More magazine and proposed a story and photo shoot about body image. We all know people who appear on the covers of magazines have the aid of make-up, lighting, camera angles, and airbrushing, but rarely do we know how much help they have. Ms Curtis decided to show the world how she truly looked in comparison with her glamorous image. In the magazine there were two pictures of Jamie Lee Curtis. In the first she was wearing brief shorts and a sports bra with no make-up or jewelry. In the second picture she was wearing a stunning black dress and heels, full make-up and professionally styled hair. It took thirteen people three hours to put her together for the second shot. In the first picture she looks good, but she looks 43 with the stomach, hips and thighs of a normal woman her age. In the second picture she looks like a movie star, unnaturally young, poised, and perfect. The pictures show how much the entertainment industry can enhance the human body and the falseness of most media pictures. The accompanying article underscores how ludicrous it is to hold ourselves up to these perfect images. We will fall short unless we have a team of people and hours to spend creating that glamorous look. Hatha Yoga, the physical form of yoga, is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. With its growth, there is concern that yoga is feeding into our society s fixation on the body. This focus on the body can range from looking good in cute yoga clothes to being able to do cool yoga poses. Though Hatha Yoga can have an effect on appearance over time, this was not its original purpose. In some older forms of Yoga, the yogis neglected their bodies while they sat and meditated for days, weeks, months, and even years. Hatha Yoga was a shift in philosophy where the body became important because a healthy body enabled the yogi to handle the rigors of spiritual practice. This is a far cry from cute clothes and cool poses.

2 In all forms of Yoga we are seen as more than just our bodies. This is understandable because no matter what happens to us physically, whether we get a cold, sprain an ankle, or just get older, changes to our bodies do not alter who we really are inside. Though Hatha Yoga brings our focus to our bodies, it can be used as a method of exploration. We can see how we physically change over time and realize that no matter what is happening to us physically, there is more to us than just our appearance. Susan Van Nuys (E-RYT 500) is the director of The Health Advantage Yoga Center. She has been a yoga practitioner since 1989 and is a certified Anusara Yoga Instructor. Susan has studied with many world-class instructors and has chosen to focus on the Anusara style. She received a BS degree in computer science and linguistics from the College of William and Mary. She particularly enjoys applying the logic she learned while programming to the progressive teaching of yoga poses. When not involved with yoga, Susan enjoys hiking, biking and traveling. P.S. If you would like to see the pictures, search the Internet for Jamie Lee Curtis More magazine 2002 YOGA 1/BEGINNER is the introductory class for students who are new to Yoga. This class focuses on poses to stretch and strengthen the legs, back, and shoulders. Emphasis is given to the basic alignment of the standing poses. GENTLE YOGA 1 is designed for those who prefer a class less vigorous than Yoga 1. It includes gentle stretches and breathing as well as simple movements designed to systematically increase the range of motion of every major joint and increase energy. This class is ideal for students with chronic symptoms such as muscle/ joint pain, stiffness, weakness, or fatigue. GENTLE YOGA 2 is a continuation of Gentle Yoga 1, emphasizing the refinement of Gentle Yoga 1 poses and introducing the basic Anusara Yoga principles. This class will focus on strengthening the body and adapting poses to protect injured or weak joints. New breathing and relaxation techniques will be introduced as well. This class is more strenuous than Gentle Yoga 1 and students must complete at least two sessions of Gentle Yoga 1 before taking Gentle Yoga 2. YOGA 1-2 is a continuation class for Yoga 1. The emphasis of this course is on refining and building endurance in Yoga 1 and Yoga 2 standing poses. The basic Anusara Yoga principles of alignment are presented. This class is suitable for students who have practiced other styles of yoga, but it is not suitable for those who have never studied yoga before. YOGA 2/ADVANCED BEGINNER focuses on refining the standing poses and learning basic sitting postures, simple back bending poses, and the shoulder stand using the Anusara Yoga principles of alignment. It is recommended that students complete both Yoga 1 and Yoga 1-2 before taking Yoga 2. YOGA 2-3 is a combination class. It begins with Yoga 2 poses and moves gradually into Yoga 3 poses, particularly strengthening poses for the upper body in preparation for the headstand and handstand. The headstand is the major pose learned in this course. Students should complete at least three sessions of Yoga 2 before taking Yoga 2-3. Please do not attend class if you have a contagious condition. HAYC has a flexible make-up policy and we will welcome you back when you have recovered. 2 healthadvantageyoga.com

3 Classes (cont.) We regret there is NO CHILDCARE available at the Yoga Center. YOGA 3/INTERMEDIATE continues with refinements to poses studied in Yoga 1 and 2 and introduces the headstand, forearm balance, and full arm balance (handstand). Additional back bend poses are also included. Regular yoga practice outside of class is strongly encouraged. It is recommended that students complete at least three sessions of Level 2 and one session of Level 2-3 before taking Yoga 3. YOGA 4/ADVANCED is for students who are capable of holding a freestanding headstand, can do a full arm balance (handstand) alone at the wall, and who can push up into Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Facing Bow Pose) with straight arms. Regular practice is expected. Permission of the instructor is required. VINYASA YOGA 1 Come join us and step in to the flow! Vinyasa flow yoga is a series of movements and poses sequenced and coordinated with the breath. Each movement connects with the next, gradually warming, stretching and strengthening the entire body. Since Vinyasa is a more strenuous format, this class is open only to those students who have completed at least two sessions of Yoga 2 or who have a strong Vinyasa based practice (Ashtanga or power based flows). VINYASA YOGA 2 The flow moves forward! This class builds on Vinyasa Yoga 1 and moves toward full backbends as well as arm balancings such as Crane and Handstand. Students should be free of major injuries, able to move repetitively from Chaturanga to Upward Facing Dog and be able to practice shoulder stand in the center of the room. Students must have completed 3 sessions of Vinyasa Yoga 1 or have the permission of the instructor. Suitable as a make-up class for students in Yoga 4. YIN YANG YOGA is a combination of quiet stationary poses and flowing sequences of poses. The Yin practice is designed to work our connective tissues and to protect the health of our joints. The Yin practice is a perfect complement to the more muscular, movement-oriented Yang practices of yoga which include Sun Salutes, Vinyasas, and Paul Grilley s Tai-chi/Yoga Flows. This class is suitable for students who have completed at least one session of Yoga 2. PRANAYAMA is the study of our breath and the life force called Prana. The practice of conscious breath control strengthens the respiratory system, improves concentration, allows for a vital and long life, better emotional control, and an increased ability to deal with complex situations without suffering from stress. Open to students who have completed at least one session of Yoga 1 or Gentle Yoga. Drop-ins and make-ups are only allowed in the first three weeks of the session. PRENATAL YOGA is for pregnant women. This class is designed to help you stay relaxed and healthy throughout pregnancy and to prepare you for delivery. It is fun and appropriate for both new and experienced yoga students. Please obtain your doctor s or midwife s permission in writing before enrolling. YOGA FOR LIL KIDS (ages 3-5) encourages younger children to experience yoga. Using yoga postures in games, stories, adventures, and songs, children improve motor skills, flexibility, balance, strength, concentration and self esteem while having fun. Children will also be introduced to relaxation and breathing techniques. All children must be potty trained. YOGA FOR KIDS (ages 6-11) is designed to help children build strength and flexibility, concentration and focus, compassion and self-esteem through the playful practice of yoga postures. Kids will have fun as they improve their posture, motor coordination and balance. Yoga poses will help children cope with the conflicts and stress of a very hectic world. A child who learns yoga will develop skills that will last a lifetime. TEENS YOGA (ages 12-17) Life can be very busy and stressful for teens these days. This class gives teens the opportunity to participate in a nurturing activity that provides exercise for the total body as well as relaxation techniques that can be used for school, sports, performing arts, sleep improvement, and life skills. Yoga allows teens to find strength and flexibility through practice and patience. Skills developed through yoga will last a lifetime. Winter 2008 The Health Advantage Yoga Center 3

TURN UP THE JUICE: VINYASA PRACTICE with Dianne, January 9: 7:00-9:00 p.m., $30 Don t get cold over the break! Instead, step into a flow that s guaranteed to warm the body and the soul. Join Dianne and savor the rasa of the practice by cultivating a clearer awareness that opens the door to the truly transformational quality of the vinyasa. INTRODUCTION TO THE CHAKRAS with Pat Pao Chakras 1 & 2: Saturday, January 19: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Chakras 3 & 4: Saturday, February 23: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Chakras 5, 6 & 7: Saturday, March 15: 1:00-4:00 p.m. $45 per workshop We and all living beings are composed of energy which is the root of all life. These workshops are basic introductions to the chakras. The word chakra means wheel or disc. There are seven major chakras or spinning wheels of energy in the body and their balance is key to our physical health, our emotional stability, and our mental clarity. In each workshop we will focus on exploring the yoga poses that can be used to bring the chakras into balance. Handouts provided. 3 CEUs per workshop. There is a $5 cancellation fee per workshop. Refunds: You must cancel at least 7 days prior to the workshop in order to receive a refund unless your spot can be filled from our waiting list. ESTABLISHING A HOME PRACTICE with Kathy Saturday, January 26: 1:00-3:00 p.m., $30 What do you love about yoga? What would it mean to you to experience that feeling every day? Explore the possibilities of beginning a daily practice and maintaining your personal commitment. This workshop will help take you from the classroom to a deeper understanding of yoga and yourself. Through discussion and practice we will expose the benefits and challenges of a home practice. If you need inspiration or want to learn about starting a home practice this workshop is for you. 2 CEUs. HIP OPENERS with Jan, February 3, 1:00-3:00 p.m., $30 Hip strength and flexibility is an important factor in almost all poses. As you develop more mobility in your hips you notice increased freedom in your lower back, hips, pelvic region and knees. In this workshop we will explore different ways to create this expansion and openness. Appropriate for students Level 2 and above. CEUs are Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Credits. The CEU designation refers to the level of Yoga Alliance registration of the teacher and does not denote the difficulty of the subject matter of the workshop. 5 Kathy Duke is teaching a winter Pranayama course on Saturdays at 10:45 a.m. Pranayama is the study of the breath. For a complete description, please see Classes and Information on page 3. Due to the high demand for Yoga 1-2 classes at 5:45 p.m., we are changing the Yoga 1 on Tuesdays at 5:45 to a Yoga 1-2. Robbie will continue to teach the class. Eileen is returning to teach Yoga 1 on s at 7:30 p.m. and Linda is returning to teach Yoga 2 on s at 5:45 p.m. Mary will now teach the Yoga 1 on s at 7:30 p.m. We are discontinuing the Postpartum class for the present. We need seven registered students to hold a session of classes. If the course for which you have registered has fewer than seven students, the class may be cancelled. You will be notified and we will try to find another class for you. HATHA YOGA is an ancient discipline that explores, develops, and integrates the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga systematically stretches and strengthens muscles throughout the body, increases circulation to internal organs and glands, quiets the nervous system, and improves concentration. This ancient system of self-care brings vitality, health, deep relaxation, and peace of mind. The style of Hatha Yoga taught is the Anusara method, based on the work of John Friend. Anusara Yoga is a new style of yoga that is heart-oriented, spiritually inspiring, and yet grounded in a deep knowledge of optimal body alignment in the poses. Instructors encourage students to listen to their bodies, respect its wisdom, and to progress at their own pace. Deep relaxation is taught in each class after completion of the postures. The intention of the instructors at HAYC is to assist students in the development of physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing: a truly priceless health advantage. Please no baggy pants as they mask the alignment of the legs. Remove your shoes before entering the yoga rooms. All props are supplied. Please do not eat 2-3 hours before class. FREE SAMPLE CLASSES are held the week before the session begins. They are an opportunity for new students to see our Yoga Center, meet the instructors and experience a class. We recommend you sign up for a sample class taught by the instructor with whom you plan to study. Please see page 12 for the dates and times. MAKE-UPS: We strongly encourage students to get the full experience of their course by making up any classes missed. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Missed classes can only be made up during the current session at the same level or lower. There is no need to call ahead to take a make-up class. Just come to any appropriate level class and give the instructor your name and regular class. Make-ups are only permitted during the first three weeks of the session in the Pranayama class. Teen students can make up in Yoga 1 classes if this is their first session of Teens Yoga or in Yoga 1-2 classes if they have taken more than one Teens Yoga class. DROP-IN CLASSES: Drop-ins are allowed for students who are currently enrolled and wish to take an extra class or for students who are not enrolled but have completed an equivalent level of Anusara or Iyengar yoga. Drop-ins are permitted ONLY in classes that are not filled. Please call to confirm there is space. Drop-ins are not allowed in the Kids, Teen, or Prenatal classes unless the student has previously taken the class and still meets the requirements. In the Pranayama class, drop-ins are only allowed in the first three weeks of the session. See page 11 for drop-in fees. WEATHER: If classes have to be cancelled due to inclement weather, there will be an announcement on the answering machine one hour before the class is scheduled to begin. 8 JAN BALDI (RYT 200) began studying yoga in She completed the HAYC Teacher Training Program and studied with numerous senior yoga teachers. Her primary teacher is John Schumacher who has influenced and inspired her practice. John Friend has also influenced her practice. She has an MS degree in Public Administration. NICK BAUER (RYT 200) began his study of yoga in He completed the Radiant Child teacher training with Shakta Kaur Khalsa in 2003; the HAYC teacher training, and the Level 2 teacher training with John Friend in 2004; and Yin Yoga teacher training with Sarah Powers in He has also studied with Betsey Downing, Paul Grilley, Judith Lasater, Elise Browning Miller, Desiree Rumbaugh, and Mukunda Stiles. Nick enjoys sharing his experience and leading others on their own journey of yoga. JENNIFER BRESEMAN (E-RYT 200) is an Anusara Affiliated instructor. She has completed the HAYC teacher training program and Levels 1 & 2 Anusara teacher training with John Friend. She also draws on her training and experience as a Registered Nurse, including working in Labor and Delivery. She loves to watch the transformative power of yoga as it unfolds in her life and in the lives of her students. KELLY CLEVELAND (RYT 200) has studied yoga since She received her teaching certificate in 1994 and began teaching at HAYC in Her primary teachers were Betsey Downing and Kevin Perry. She has also studied with Doug Keller, Sarah Powers, Rodney Yee, Judith Lasater, and John Friend. Kelly s main focus is to teach the Anusara Principles through her own experiences and love for yoga. KATHY DUKE (E-RYT 200) completed the Health Advantage Yoga Center teacher training program with Betsey Downing and Doug Keller in Since then, she has attended workshops with Kaustaub Desikachar, Erich Schiffman, David Frawley, John Friend and Judith Lasater and is certified from Motherwell as a Maternity Health and Fitness Professional. Kathy earned a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and she has worked and volunteered in the health and fitness industry for more than seventeen years.. DIANNE FALK (E-RYT 200) is an approved Anusara Inspired teacher who studies regularly with John Friend and his senior teachers. She has completed Anusara teacher trainings with John Friend and with Health Advantage Yoga Center and also holds a 55 hour Iyengar certificate. Her passion for the mind-body connection lights up her practice as well as her teaching. With joyful spirit, Dianne encourages her students to celebrate their own individual talents and to step into the flow of grace in their lives. LINDA JACOBSEN (RYT 200) has completed teacher trainings from HAYC, Anusara Yoga, and Rod Stryker s Pure Yoga. She has a BS in earth sciences and an MA in writing and editing, and she works for the U.S. Geological Survey. Linda enjoys kayaking, hiking, writing, and traveling. ROBBIE KATSON (RYT 200) has studied yoga since She completed the HAYC Teacher Training program and has studied with John Friend, Rodney Yee and others. She wants to share with students the strength, peace and centering that yoga brings to stress-filled lives. Robbie has an MA in Economics and works for the Government. DOUG KELLER (E-RYT 500) has a strong background in the alignment based styles of Iyengar and Anusara Yoga, as well as in yoga philosophy and yoga therapy. He is a regular columnist in the internationally renowned magazine Yoga+ and is the author of several books covering all aspects of yoga practice. He holds a Master s Degree in Philosophy from Fordham University, and travels nationally and internationally, teaching workshops in philosophy and pranayama as well as hatha yoga. KELLY KESSLER (RYT 200) started as a student at HAYC in 1993 and completed the HAYC Teacher Training Program in She studies therapeutic yoga intensively, drawing upon her own experiences as well as her work as a Neuromuscular Massage Therapist to teach the healing power of yoga to her students. JANET KIM (RYT 500) is a Certified Anusara Yoga Instructor. Janet began her study and practice of Hatha Yoga in She has taught yoga since 1987 and completed the HAYC teacher training in Janet has studied yoga with Betsey Downing, John Friend, Desiree Rumbaugh, Rodney Yee, Sarah Powers, and Doug Keller. ANDE McDONALD (RYT 200) began her study of yoga in Ande completed teacher training programs with Betsey Downing, Lillah Schwartz, and John Friend. She has taught yoga at HAYC since 1995 and currently studies with Doug Keller. Ande s intention is for her students to find the joy of movement in their yoga practice and their daily lives. PAT PAO (E-RYT 200) began her yoga studies with Betty Roi. She has studied extensively at HAYC since 1998 and has completed the HAYC Teacher Training Program, Radiant Child, Yoga 4 Teens & Yin Yoga Teacher Training programs. She is also a Relax & Renew Trainer. Pat has completed intensive teacher training workshops with Kaustaub Desikachar, John Friend, Paul Grilley, Anodea Judith, Judith Lasater, Elise Browning Miller, Sarah Powers, Erich Schiffman and Rodney Yee. She is a former professional dancer and ballet teacher. Pat has worked the last 18 years as a movie casting director. EILEEN ROEHR (RYT 200) got hooked on yoga at HAYC in She is an Anusara Affiliate and her primary teachers are Betsey Downing, Doug Keller, and Susan Van Nuys. Eileen has also studied with John Friend, Suzie Hurley, and Jenny Otto. In her other life she is the Program Director at Graydon Manor; where she also teaches yoga to emotionally disturbed youngsters. MARY RUBARD (RYT 200) began her study of yoga at HAYC in She completed her teacher training in 2006 with Susan Van Nuys and Doug Keller and the Radiant Child Yoga Program levels I & II with Shakta Kaur Khalsa in Mary is also a Certified Massage Therapist and is certified in Thai Yoga Massage. Mary s focus is to bring balance and calm into her life and to share this with others. PAT TAYLOR (RYT 200) dabbled in yoga and meditation for years before realizing that she wanted them to be the center of her life. She completed the HAYC Teacher Training Program and is currently enrolled in the Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California. Pat attends meditation retreats nationally and continues the study of yoga with various teachers. RYT and E-RYT are registrations with the Yoga Alliance. These registrations represent levels of educational training and teaching experience for yoga teachers. All HAYC teachers have met these standards and are registered with the Yoga Alliance.
