3 Parish Council Meeting February 2011 The Council meeting held on 7 th February was attended by 7 councillors, the District Councillor, two County Councillors, The RAF Base Commander at Alconbury and the Contracts Director for Urban & Civic at Alconbury as well as eleven members of the public. The RAF Commander gave information on the proposed new entrance to the north of Little Stukeley for the base, also new developments on the base being new schools and dental facility which were already funded and would eventually lead to the involvement with RAF Upwood by the Americans being terminated, these measures would mean traffic movements would be reduced in the short term, the new entrance which would have entry and exit restrictions would assist in significantly reducing traffic numbers through the villages. He said the second phase of the proposals, which were not yet funded, included an upgraded, with roundabout, entrance facility, new administration facility and the transfer of campus facilities from Molesworth, this he agreed would produce more traffic but he said that the restrictions on entry and exit would still mean significantly less traffic through the villages. The Contract Director for Urban & Civic said that the new proposals for the base would involve high tech, manufacturing and office jobs with the emphasis on skilled employment, which over the next twenty five years could yield up to 6000 jobs. It was also envisaged that some 4000 houses could be developed on the site as well. He said that Grange Farm had recently been purchased but assured that this was not for development creep but to facilitate eventually better links with the rail network, into which there were long term plans to introduce a new passenger station(huntingdon North) and forge better links with the A141 and Huntingdon therefore eliminating further the traffic through the villages. He added that the land at Grange Farm also created the possibility for the introduction of community woodland areas, public paths and also perhaps, allotments. He also said anyone at anytime was welcome to make an appointment and that they could be guided round the area and these proposals. In the remainder of the meeting the Council discussed speeding issues and HGV transit through Little Stukeley and the County Council and Police were asked to take appropriate action. Mrs. Parkin reported the completion of the tree planting and thanked everyone that helped with this work. There were no other significant issues to report. 4 Thursford Christmas Spectacular 2011 In 1977 against a background of steam engines,mechanical organs and fairground rides a small Christmas Show took place with eight choral scholars from Kings College,Cambridge singing a selection of John Rutter carols.this show has now grown into the largest Christmas Show in Great Britain. Prince William and Kate Middleton,on her very first official engagement,visited Thursford attending a gala performance in mid December 2010 in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. Prince William was invited to the event by Emilie van Cutsem,Chairman of teenage Cancer Trust East Anglia s Appeal. She is a close friend of the Royal family. Our coach has been booked and my choice of dates has been mailed to Thursford during the last days of December 2010.So I am now awaiting news as to whether or not I have been lucky this year with my requested 50 seats: Sunday 20 th November 2011 Sunday 27 th November 2011 Preferred Second Choice I am hoping to receive word by post AFTER EASTER 2011.Once this good news arrives I will be able to work out my charges for this year. 5 Tour of Westminster and The Churchill War Rooms 2011 For nearly six years hundreds of men worked to get the ground ready to begin construction on building the Houses of Parliament. They had to clear away the rubble of the ruined buildings. It was not a good site for a large building as the ground was marshy and there were times when the River Thames flooded the site. I am planning a guided tour of Westminster and the Churchill War Rooms on Tuesday 7 th June Departure will be at am from the Great Stukeley Village Hall which should get us to Westminster in time for our tour which is booked for just after am. After lunch in the Commons Jubilee Café, which is NOT included in the price of your tour, we will walk over to The Churchill War Rooms. Your visit begins with the highpoint of Winston Churchill s career-his appointment as Prime Minister in 1940.The Museum then follows Churchill s career as Cold War statesman and concludes with moving footage of his funeral in Please make contact with me WITHOUT DELAY if you are interested in this trip so that you can be assured of a seat on the coach. 9 Digital Television Switchover When, what, how? On 30 th March, the BBC 2 analogue channel will be switched off in Cambridgeshire, followed by the remaining analogue channels on 13 th April. From then on, if you aren t set up to receive digital, you won t be able to watch your television. This can be a worrying prospect, and at Cambridgeshire County Council s Trading Standards Service we want to ensure that you know where to go for advice. How will it affect me? If you have Sky TV, Freesat from Sky, Freesat or Virgin Media you don t need to do anything (but note, additional TVs in the house may be affected). If you have Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV you will need to re-tune your television 5 times in Guidance on re-tuning can be found on Digital UK s website (below). Alternatively you can pay a trader to re-tune it each time. If you currently have five channels or fewer, you have three options: Option 1: get a digital box. If you get a good analogue picture through your aerial now, you could purchase a Freeview set top box. Other options are satellite services Freesat from Sky or Freesat. Once purchased, these do not have a monthly fee. For even more channels, consider a monthly subscription service from Sky, BT Vision or Top Up TV. Your existing TV should work fine with any of these, provided it has an aerial or Scart socket. Only Freeview requires an aerial, and in most cases, if your current analogue picture is OK, your aerial should work fine with Freeview. If you do need a new aerial, contact the Registered Digital Installers Licensing Body on or visit for a list of registered installers. Option 2: buy a new Freeview recorder with twin tuners. This will receive digital television, acting as a digital box, and is also a recorder, allowing you to watch one channel while recording another. After the switchover, if you don t have a digital recorder, you will only be able to record the channel you are watching. Option 3: buy a new television that has a built in digital tuner. Look for - Where can I go for advice? You can contact Digital UK on for advice or visit their website If you have a hearing or speech impediment, contact the textphone service on What is the Help Scheme? A Help Scheme is available if you are 75 or over, have lived in a care home for over six months, get certain disability benefits or are registered blind or partially sighted. 11 Further News of the Cat Poisoned in Great Stukeley Last Year You may remember the article below that was printed in the November issue of the Stukeleys Parish Magazine. We have had an update from the cay s owner: The cat I wrote to you about last year has been left with permanent kidney damage, the vet is still trying to work out correct medicines and dosage for her. Such a sad, sad life for a 2yr old cat! First printed in the November Stukeleys Parish Magazine. Cat Poisoned in Great Stukeley We have had a report of a cat being poisoned in Great Stukeley on 23rd September. Due to the quick thinking of the owner and the best possible treatment from the vet, the cat pulled through although it was critical for a period of time. If you notice any odd behaviour about your cat, in particular very sudden onset of sickness, diahorrea and breathing difficulties, please seek immediate veterinary advice. The police and RSPCA have been notified. The following was taken from the RSPCA: "Please remember that cats are free to roam. They are protected by law and it is an offence to harm or terrify a cat or to steal one. It is also an offence to put down snares, poison or an unlicensed deterrent. In attempting to prevent cats from entering a garden, it s important to make sure that any deterrent methods you use are non-harmful and don t cause pain, suffering or distress. Nobody is saying that this cat was intentionally poisoned but please be careful what you use to deter cats and other animals. The owner of this cat has had to pay around 500 in vet s fees and will have to take the cat back for periodic blood tests to see how her liver is coping. This will mean yet more veterinary fees and distress to the cat! Firstly I would like to thank Sue Parkin and her husband Ken for all the preparational work which helped to achieve the planting of this avenue of trees under the guidance of Bridget Holford. Secondly thanks to the brilliant team of volunteers from the two parishes who we will always be grateful to for making the whole scheme come together. Also, though repeating myself, may I thank again the Parishioners of the two villages who came out in force to do the voluntary planting. 13 Disabled Children s Access to Childcare (DCATCH) The Cambridgeshire County Council Disabled Children s Access to Childcare (DCATCH) project is aimed at supporting parents/carers of disabled children in accessing suitable childcare; enabling them the chance of returning to employment and/or training. It is part of the Cambridgeshire Childcare Information Service (CIS). The aim of DCATCH is to highlight that a child with a disability and his/her family should have access to the full range of childcare options that are open to other families Sure Start, 2005 A lack of information about the childcare services that are available, and confusion about the quality and potential benefits of using childcare, continue to create barriers for some parents. Department for children, schools and families, Dec The aim of the project is to work closely with parents, childcare providers and professionals, embedding the principles of DCATCH; ensuring inclusion into early years and childcare settings for all. A referral service to parents shows where to go for support and guidance with their childcare options via the Childcare Brokerage Service. Once a family is identified we can then, through the CIS Childcare Brokerage Service, enquire about suitable childcare. This will include information on provision of childcare from providers, funding options, costs, specialist care and specialist facilities, if required by the provider. The DCATCH project provides a service to families, which is free of charge and completely impartial. 15 THE STUKELEY S W.I. Meeting held on Wednesday 9th February 2011 The President, Jan Sly welcomed 19 members and one visitor to the meeting. Apologises were received from Ann Monk, Mary Alleyne-James, Marlene Garner, Pearl Jacobs, Hazel Rideout, Jill Cooke and Nicki Sly. Jerusalem was sung and the meeting was opened. Thanks were given for the lovely Curtis bowl flowers from Nicki Sly, the draw prize from Maureen Sewell and to the hostesses for the evening Freda Butter and Jenny Thilo. The Minutes were read and signed as correct. Members are invited to attend an open meeting at Brampton W.I. on Tuesday 7th June interested parties to give names to Jan by April meeting. There is a talk by Open Aid Direct on 30th March at the Huntingdon H.Q. on Taking Aid to Kosovo. On the 26th May there is a Health Day talk - the topic this year is Hearing. The Group Meeting is hosted by Alconbury Weston at the hall in School Lane, Alconbury on 11th April 7pm for 7.30 pm start. The programme is Ray Spiller on Music Charts and also Derek Harris speaking on Up The Cut Barge Stories. The competitions: hand decorated/painted flower pot and unusual musical instrument. Jan to have numbers interested by March meeting. The Christmas Party was discussed and it was decided that Jan would contact Andy Collier and book him for the entertainment. A member, Kathy Simpson, gave a talk on beads and jewellery making. Kathy bought a lovely selection of beaded jewellery which was passed around for a closer look while she told us the different ways of joining the beads to make the necklaces and bracelets. She had made bridal tiaras and beaded watch straps. She also bought the tools she uses to work with. Some of the beads had been bought when on holiday, coming from Turkey, Kenya, and Egypt. There were a lot of questions asked and then Doris Saddler gave the vote of thanks. Jan gave us the information for the competitions for the East Of England Show and quite a bit of interest was shown in the group competition for Treats for Troops. Our guest, Elaine Daw judged the competition of something beaded - 1st Joan Gray, 2nd Nancy Oldfield, 3rd Sheila Stephenson. A prize of chocolates donated by Sue Stevens, was won by Elaine Daw and the main draw was won by Freda Butter. We have been asked to organise a Walk by the Federation and Jan is to put it on the agenda for the Committee meeting. Roll Call a playground game you used to play. Jen sang an amusing song to the tune of Elvis Presley s, are You Lonesome Tonight. The meeting ended at and Jan wished everyone a safe journey home. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday March 9th at 7.30 pm., when our speaker will be Clair Bond speaking about Planning Policy (Huntingdon). 16 Mowing LAWN CARE IN EARLY SPRING If conditions allow get out the mower and lightly cut the lawn. Make sure mower has been serviced and blade replaced or sharpened. Moss Moss has been a real threat to lawns this year, and may be affecting your lawn. Apply a specific moss treatment now, or get ProLawnCare to spray with their special Moss Control Treatment. 19 Allotments? The Parish Council is looking into the practicality of providing allotments for the use of village residents. At this stage we need to find if there is enough interest and look for a suitable area of ground. If Alconbury's experience is any guide, it seems there could be quite a lot of demand. They established their scheme in March last year on about 3 acres of leased land, and now have over 40 plots (including some half-plots) and a waiting list. If you might be interested in taking a plot in a Stukeleys scheme, please let us know - send your contact details to me. Stukeley paul@ryanresearch.co.uk Stukeleys Heritage Group At our meeting on 16 th February, Margaret Faulkner came to talk to us about her early life here in The Stukeleys. Her family came here in 1940 when she was just 5 years old and her twin sisters just one year old. The family moved into a house in Owl End, Great Stukeley which was rented from the Fenwick family who lived in Great Stukeley Hall. Margaret has written two books based on these years of the 1940s and 1950s and is currently working on the third about her life starting work in Huntingdon. We had over 30 people attend and there was much laughter and exchange of memories. Many thanks to Margaret and to Penny and David Glover for recording it. We hope to have it captured on cd and aim to put audio clips on our website which, thanks to Nicola Oldfield, should soon be up and running. As an outsider in origin and brought up in the London suburbs, what I found interesting was the strong sense of community in those years which was focussed on the school and WI hut. A number of new people joined the Group at the meeting and John Oldfield, our treasurer, tells me that our finances although modest are healthy. The next meeting will be 7.30pm on Wednesday 20 th April at Great Stukeley Village Hall. This will be another opportunity to bring along documents and photos for our technical wizards John and Nicola to scan. To keep us fully occupied, Ken Parkin is setting another Stukeleys Quiz, so sharpen memory and observation in readiness! I have also had a number of suggestions for future events. These include tracing the changes to the villages through historic maps (Paul Ryan) and following the history of some of the village families or houses (Jean Chalker). Margaret Faulkner has also agreed to come back, maybe with a theme of shopping, tradesmen and rationing. I will put more of these thoughts into an item in next month s magazine. And what a pleasant surprise awaited me. To walk into a warm building, and be greeted by friendly faces and the gorgeous smell of breakfast being cooked. It was a real treat to have someone else cook a good full breakfast and, it didn t cost me a penny! After filling ourselves on all that good food, we had a great time of fellowship and discussion and in the process we learnt something about God s creation and how he created various kinds of plants and animals. It was an enjoyable experience and I would encourage other men to come and taste what is good. I am going back next month (Saturday 12th March 9.00am). Can I look forward to seeing you there?
