3 STUKELEYS PARISH COUNCIL Thirteen Councillors, the District Councillor and one member of the public attended the January meeting of the Council. Mr. Ryan reported that the works at Great Stukeley hall were to be completed in February of this year and that it was hoped that further grant aid could be achieved to finance the cost of new curtaining this summer. It was reported by Mr. Cowdery that there is to be a proposed diversion of public footpath 11 through Grange Farm to move it from traveling across grass meadows to the south of the farmhouse to a position on the metaled roadway linking Grange and Lodge Farms and exiting along the Grange Farm access road to join Green End and the paths to Great Stukeley and Huntingdon. There was no further news on traffic calming. The chairman reported that there were several areas in the two villages that needed a spruce up and that all churchyard hedges and that of the village hall in Little Stukeley needed winter maintenance work, he was given authority to put in place these works as long as the cost did not exceed A meeting with M/s Persimmon Homes to discuss plans for the Northbridge development was advised. A dog appearing to be without satisfactory supervision in Park View was to be reported to the dog warden of the District Council. The next Council meeting will be on Monday 2 nd February 2009 at Great Stukeley village hall commencing at 7.30pm. NB. Please will dog owners refrain from depositing their dog waste bags in the village(blue) salt bins, I had the unenviable task of removing them so that salt could be filled during the recent cold spell. Thank You!!. Michael. J. Newman, Clerk & RFO A message from RAF Alconbury Thank you for the opportunity to write in the Parish Magazine. We look forward to letting everyone know about what is going on at RAF Alconbury, RAF Molesworth and RAF Upwood. Hopefully we can pass on a few of our traditions and talk about some of our holidays and events. In January, we celebrated Martin Luther King day. The Reverend Martin Luther King was one of our greatest spokesman and activists for human rights and equal rights for all. His life was cut short by an assassins bullet in the late 1960's but his legacy of judging all "not by the color of their skin, but the content of their character," will live on. We also celebrated the inauguration of our new president on 20 January. I would like to talk a little about the playing of Retreat. It is a time-honored tradition at both US and UK bases to "sound" Retreat at the end of the duty day. We do this at 1700 and play the UK and US national anthems to honor both of our great countries. We've have received some complaints about the volume of the anthems and are taking steps to lower the volume. We currently have purchased new cards with the anthems played at a lower volume. Those have been tested and should be installed soon. We are also working with a company to purchase a more up-to-date system for our base-wide warning system that will allow us to adjust the volume of the system. This is not available with our current system. Again thank you for the opportunity to participate in your magazine, we look forward to many more articles. 5 Retirement one year on by Grahame Bundy February 08 is the time, I m sixty five and in my prime, The Boss he said thanks for all you have done, Now go, retire and have some fun. My colleges said, what will you do There must be a jobs list waiting for you, I ve not retired to work I say, The fun part will be done in my own special way. So to start, take a rest is the only way, And for that we ll take a long holiday. Six thousand miles we travelled that day To stay with a cousin far far away. Tlnilled to see us I could tell, She said we both looked oh so well, I m really pleased to see you here Will you tix my kitchen dear? Worktops, sinks and tiles were set In ninety degree heat all I did was sweat, Tired and wom but with no lasting regret, Retirement hasn t started yet Three mouths on what will I do There s so many hobbies I want to pursue, But, as time slips so rapidly by I don t seem to get started, why oh why. The heating needs iixing before winter starts So off come the rads, the pipe and the parts So warm it will be, when it s damp and it s wet, Retirement still hasn t started just yet. Autumn leaves begin to fall, Sweeping and gathering to collect them all, Christmas is coming, well, there it s just gone I m beginning to think I ve got this all wrong. February 09 is the time, And as you see, I had the time, to stop and think about this rhyme. So as time goes by I think I ll say, I HAD BETTER RETIRE ANOTHER DAY...,... 8 Fed up with the cold weather? Thinking about a holiday? Ever thought of Northern Cyprus? Below is an article written by Joanne Cowdery. Northern Cyprus by Joanne Cowdery Northern Cyprus is unique beautiful natural attractions, unspoilt coastlines and over nine thousand years of history. It s one of those destinations which is off the beaten track (because all flights were indirect via Turkey). After more than three decades of relative isolation, recent EU legislation and a relaxation of the border controls between the North and South of the island have made it possible for you to freely use airports serving the Republic of Cyprus. It is relatively unspoilt at the moment apart from the mass of building work which is taking place in and around Kyrenia (Girne). Alarmingly this building work is primarily for ex-pats!! Nevertheless Northern Cyprus is well worth a visit, and I would recommend you go before it gets too touristy. Golden sandy beaches abound, picture-postcard villages, brilliant weather and a treasure chest of ancient ruins, medieval castles and abbeys. Additionally there is a profusion of Roman history, exemplified by the many remains. The superb coastline of Northern Cyprus combines natural unspoiled beauty with a rich and varied history. This is why Kyrenia is one of the most picturesque towns in the Mediterranean, situated in a peaceful setting 2000 ft below the castle of St Hilarion which is perched atop the rocks of the Besparmak mountain range. Kyrenias tiny crescent harbour still retains its original character, and is dominated by an imposing 7 th century castle which houses the famous Shipwreck museum. Originally a fishing village during the 13 th century, Famagusta (Gazimagusa) rapidly evolved to become a major mediaeval commercial centre between East and West. It was a residence for rich merchants who built many of the monuments seen today, within the impressive walls built by the Venetians to protect the wealth of the city from hostile invaders. The Lusignans crowned their kings in the famous St Nicholas Cathedral which now dominates the old city, with its original gothic architecture, superbly preserved by the Ottoman Turks who added a minaret and converted the interior into a mosque. You will enjoy walking the narrow streets of the old city, deep within the safety of the historic walls, where hundreds of shopkeepers display their selection of local arts and crafts. Once you get into the remote villages it s like going back in time, you may see ladies walking in the middle of the street carrying loads of hay on their back, farmers on donkeys rounding up the sheep, and groves of orange and lemon trees. From February to June many areas of Northern Cyprus are carpeted with colourful wild flowers. Wildlife include birds, butterflies, lizards and the loggerhead and green turtles still come ashore to lay their eggs on Northern Cyprus unspoiled beaches. The local people are very friendly and hospitable, and proud of their culture and their Turkish Cypriot cuisine which is unique and delicious. The countryside of North Cyprus is beautiful, and just waiting to be explored. I stayed at the Bellapais Monastery Village and the food was excellent, well worth paying the half board supplement if you don t want to be thinking about where to eat each night. The choice on the menu was very good. Joannes Tips Driving is on the left, so hiring a car is a good way to be independent and get around. Bellapais Abbey in the village of Bellapais which was made famous by Lawrence Durrell in his Bitter Lemons and the famous Tree of Idleness is well worth a visit. St Hilarion Castle which is just outside of Kyrenia has spectacular views. Explore off the beaten track it s like travelling back in time. The organised excursions by the tour operators are good value for money and generally include the admission fees to the places of interest, so well worth considering. It is best to do it now before the spring starts. Aeration Aerate (deep spiking) the lawn now to alleviate compaction, allow air down to the roots and drain water away from the surface. Actions required in Early Spring Mow lawn lightly when dry enough. I think that he was killed for three reasons. First, the authorities and others were jealous of him. Jesus was able, by all accounts to speak with authority, to heal the sick, cast out demons and was popular with the crowds. Second, there was a case of mistaken identity. In the days of Jesus there were several wandering preachers who for the most part were trying to turn people against the Roman invaders and the Jewish authorities. An assumption was made by some people that Jesus was the same as these others. We all make assumptions from time to time and sometimes that can be a mistake! Third, the rulers of his day feared that Jesus would take away their power and control. They were probably right but what he wanted to give in return was peace and joy and love. Easter Day, the day of resurrection, is in part about being able to rise above all that diminishes our humanity including jealousy, assumption making and the desire to hang onto power and control, which is an issue for all of us. The good news, I believe, is that it is possible to let go of all these things and to experience a deep sense of joy and to know peace and love in our lives. When it arrives I wish you a very happy Easter.
