An issue was raised by the parishioner about the signage outside the new base northern entrance, contrary to promises received the sign still indicates a right hand turn into the base and considering this new facility is primarily for HGV traffic it is still considered that this signage invites these vehicles to travel through the villages to access the base, something that it had been assured would not occur. Mr. Monk explained that the traffic group were still in dialogue with County officials over the introduction of new speed limit reductions and also a review of the signage issue. Enabling plans for the initial works to facilitate the new Enterprise Zone at Alconbury were given a cautionary approval with certain issues such as light pollution, speed limits, dust and noise suppression and visual & environmental impact of the new gate houses singled out as requiring planning conditions. The new route for footpath 11 at Grange Farm has become closer to implementation, signage on footpath 8 at Nook farm has been agreed with landowner, Footpath 2 from Mill Road to Alconbury was still under review but with Alconbury PC now supporting it s reinstatement. Issues surrounding footpath 9 however were still far from completion. The Council plan to have a gate installed across the junction of Owl End and Bridleway 12 had now gone into the official application stage, with at present no significant objections being raised. Negotiations with Urban & Civic on the governance issues surrounding the proposed new allotment area were proceeding slowly, but the Council were informed by Urban & Civic that a new Diamond Jubilee wood was proposed along with the edible forest this adjacent to the allotment area, it was hoped that the American Scout movement were to be involved in the maintenance of the area. Urban & Civic were warmly praised for their tree planting at the Alconbury site and specifically for the planting on their western border with Ermine Street which in time would greatly enhance the entrance into Little Stukeley from the north. The next Council meeting is at Great Stukeley village hall on Monday 5 th March 2012 at 7.30pm. Michael. J. Newman, Clerk & RFO. This Month New Advertising Rates. What Great Value! During this fascinating tour we will also visit the MIDDLE TEMPLE HALL with it s double hammer beam roof as well as the simply beautiful round Norman Church built on land acquired from THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR. A delicious carvery lunch awaits us at The George, an atmospheric, halftimbered pub. 9 JOSHUA THOMAS GIFFORD JOSH It is with much sadness but also many great memories that I have to report Josh s untimely death in Findon Sussex on Thursday 9 th February Josh was born in August 1941 the son of Tom & Dinah Gifford, my uncle and aunt, of Little Stukeley. In his early years he went to junior school, when he was not out hunting with the Fitzwilliam hounds, with the rest of us to what was known then as The Church of England Primary School in Walden Road Huntingdon. But at the age of eleven the call of horses led him to leave home to go as an apprentice on the flat to Cliff Beechener in Northamptonshire, he actually had his first ride at the age of eleven on a horse named March the twenty second and went on to have his first winner at the age of fourteen. By the time Josh got to sixteen or so he had gone to ride for Sam Armstrong in Newmarket but before too long he got too heavy for the flat and transferred his attention to National Hunt Racing, moved to Findon to become second jockey to Fred Winter at the yard of Captain Ryan Price, there began a successful career in which on the retirement of Fred he became first jockey, the combination became legendary in the sixties during which Josh won the Schweppes Gold Trophy at Newbury on four occasions as well as many other major races and was champion on four occasions. During this time he never forgot his roots and always rang his mother to let her know his rides for the day, or in the summer, when in those days there was no jump racing, come home and play cricket with many local friends in what became known as the NH Jockeys cricket team, Josh absolutely loved his cricket, he was also a very talented batsman. At the ripe old age of twenty nine, at the time of Captain Price s retirement Josh took over the training establishment at Findon, this was the start of a thirty-five year training career in which he had great success including winning the Grand National in 1981 with Aldaniti. In a training career that spanned in excess of thirty years he enjoyed great success with horses like Doorlatch, Brief Gale, Kybo, Bradbury Star and Deep Sensation just to mention a few, as Margaret and I together with Josh s sister Susan went racing regularly those days we were able to witness first hand his undisguised, emotional pride and pleasure in these successes. As many of you will know Margaret & I going racing in Ireland several times a year and we can assure you he is held in very high esteem in that Country as well with many old friends that we meet on a regular basis. On a personal note Josh was best man at our wedding forty six years ago; he had the time because he was off injured with a broken leg. Finally before I take more space I would like to say in finishing, Josh was a superb ambassador for racing, a compassionate, emotional man, fiercely loyal to all that had the great fortune to have been associated with him and Margaret and I and I know Terry Pinner as well all feel very fortunate to have had the pleasure and privilege of having had the immense good fortune of being a small part of that wonderful career. A man who always made time for others, my cousin Josh, God Bless Mate we will all miss you greatly. Mike Newman

13 Great Stukeley Flower Show. February, snow on the ground frost all around, and here we are talking about the Flower Show in August. This year 2012 denotes the fortieth anniversary of the show, and the Committee would like to try to make this year s show a bit special. Over the last couple of years some of the entries in some sections have been rather disappointing, particularly in the Children s section and also the Men s Crafts. So, come on Mum s AND Dad s start planning what you are going to help your children with to enter. Also we know there are quite a few Men in the village who are very good at wood turning and wood carving, and many other hand crafts, even cooking so please let s see a few entries from you. Last year their seemed to be some confusion on what the criteria is to enter, it s simple, IF YOU ARE A RESIDENT OF GREAT STUKELEY you can enter any of the sections shown in the Flower Show Magazine. Please just enter. We would be pleased to hear any comments you have, good or bad. So if you would like us to know something please speak or call me. Grahame Bundy (Acting Chairman Great Stukeley Flower Show Committee) Tel: ROYAL BRITISH LEGION COFFEE MORNING Once again we held a successful British Legion Coffee Morning and we banked This success was due to the excellent band of helpers I have, those people who made generous donations and those members of the public who supported the event. We had some new faces among the helpers this year and I was impressed, we also had some new attendees, I enjoyed the morning, and if you did, spread the word we might get more customers next year. 14 The Olympics 2012 a great opportunity to celebrate and get involved in Cambridgeshire For the sporting. 20 THE STUKELEYS WI Meeting held on Wednesday 8 th February 2012 The President, Jan Sly welcomed twenty members to the meeting. Three apologies for absence were received. We sang Jerusalem. The Minutes of the previous meeting were read and it was agreed that they were accurate and that Jan should sign them. Jan thanked Joan Gray and Sheila Stephenson for preparing refreshments and Nita Charter for providing the draw prize and the colourful Curtis bowl arrangement. Jan also thanked Ann Monk for standing in as secretary last month. Mark Hudson, President of St Ives Photographic Club, entertained us with a selection of his winter landscape slides. There were some beautiful shots of trees and landscapes in the hoare frost of 2010 and some fascinating macro shots of ice formations. Doris Sadler gave the vote of thanks. Jan Sly said how much she also enjoyed last month s speaker Sue Angell with her talk on fans. Sarah Toyn had received a letter from Mrs Angell to be passed to Kath Simpson regarding her unusual Japanese fan as she believed it was of great historical interest and requested her permission to carry out some more detailed research on it. Jan thanked all the ladies who helped clean the church before the WI Songs of Praise at the end of January and appealed to the members to help clean on a regular basis, either monthly or bi-monthly. The service was enjoyed by all who attended. Jan said that she had received many complimentary remarks about it. She thanked Nita Charter for being reader and Sheila Stephenson thanked Jan for organising it and for the delicious cakes. Jan had sent a thank you card to the organist Collette Patmore-Hill. It was brought to the meeting s attention that we need to raise more funds for the WI this year. At committee it was suggested that we put the price of refreshments and draw up to 50p from next month. The motion was put to the meeting and passed. In terms of choosing which charity to support this year, as the village hall is so desperate for funds, it was decided that it should be our designated charity. Jan told members that there is a meeting at the village hall on Wednesday 29 th February at 7.30pm to discuss the urgent funding situation and to ask people for ideas on how to raise money for the hall. The next fund raiser for the village hall is a table top sale on Saturday 25 th February. It costs 7 to book a table and the WI will book a table and raffle a hamper. Jan said that she would make up the hamper and members needed to donate goods by 18 th February. There is a British Legion coffee morning on Friday 17 th February The competition was a landscape photograph taken by you 1 st prize: Sheila Stephenson Draw Prize: Ann Monk 2 nd prize: Sarah Toyn 3 rd prize: Nicki Sly Roll Call: your favourite iconic photograph Various Notices were read out. Sheila Stephenson appealed to the meeting to knit scarves and hats for Kosovo and to collect T shirts for Gambia. There was also some discussion about where to take milk bottle tops collected so far and watch and bra collections. There is also a nationwide WI walking and swimming challenge to walk or swim 209 miles between 1 st April and 16 th September. There are two categories: under 35 members and over 35 members. The idea is to get as many members to participate as possible and the winners will be those groups where proportionally the largest number of members has participated. Next meeting will be on Wednesday 14 th March 2012 at 7.30pm Speaker Mr Chris Hall on China Curtis Bowl and Draw: Freda Butter Competition: anything Chinese
21 Update from the Airfield It has been a busy start to the year on site at Alconbury, as we continue discussions with a range of technical and local partners and pull together the Outline Application for the site. In the next couple of weeks we will be publishing a feedback report from the Design and Discovery events we held in September and delivering them door to door. We will also be working with local parish councils to hold another round of public meetings later in the Spring to set out the application and how it has changed since the Design Enquiry feedback. We are also gearing up for the delivery of the Enterprise Zone. This includes working with Jobcentre Plus, Huntingdon Regional College, the District Council and others to come up with a system to ensure when work starts on site we can use the development to provide local jobs and to focus on training and upskilling people. We are also working on a procurement process which enables local contractors to get involved in projects on site. We hope to be rolling the details of these approaches out in the next few months. Meanwhile on site we are continuing to plant trees and lay hedging, and await the decision on our Enabling Application. We are expecting a decision on that application by the end of February, and if successful we will start work on a new construction access north of North Gate during the summer. If you want to keep updated about work on site you can subscribe to our e-newsletter online at or follow us on Twitter or get in touch with me on or ing rbritton@urbanandcivic.com. If you would like more information about Grace Fellowship visit our website, *PLEASE NOTE PETE S AND PENNY S NEW HOME PHONE NUMBER Things from the Past About 30 years ago I was asked to take the morning and evening service at Great Gidding Baptist Church. Little did I think then that I would be helping to clear out the manse following the illness of my friend, Pastor Albert was forced to give up and move to Bristol so he and his wife would be near their children. Going through some photos that they left for others to see some of the changes that have taken place over the years, I was reminded of the old box pews and high pulpit that were there that first time and the character they gave to the place. Sadly they have all been removed they were full of woodworm. One more thing that came back to me as the team started to clean and paint the rooms, was after the wood work had been washed an sanded all the holes filled and the first coat of paint applied being white it showed all the little gaps between the boards and walls they all showed up as black against the white paint, it was then that I remembered how in my youth helping a painter to paint the outside of his house he explained why it was that they painted 2 coats of under coat before the gloss paint, the reason he gave me was that that first one prepared the way for the next one by showing all the faults that needed to be put right. Life can be a little like that particularly when we walk the Christian life just as we deal with one thing up pops another one, however the only way to deal with this is like eating an Elephant and as we know the only way to eat an Elephant is one bite at a time. God bless you all Pete Bourne
