5 Parish Council Meetng The Council held its Annual Parish Meeting on Monday 2 nd April 2012, at 7.00pm, at Little Stukeley village hall; this was attended by seven members of the public. Representatives of Gt. Stukeley village hall committee advised the Council of it s financial position and also the cost of urgent repairs that were required to the heating system. It was agreed that because of the cost of repair it would be prudent to purchase a new system and at the same time attend to issues surrounding the insulation of the building. It was advised that grants should be sought from WREN, National Lottery, an approach was also suggested to Urban & Civic to see if they could assist. The Council members agreed to consider in committee the nature and amount of any financial aid the Council may be able to provide. The Council was also urged to consider financial support to the newly formed Table Tennis Club at Great Stukeley. At the Annual Parish Council Meeting that followed at 7.30pm all Councillors were present as well as District & County Councillors & Rebecca Britton of Urban & Civic. Mrs. Parkin was appointed as the replacement for Mr. Pinner as chairman followed by his resignation, Mr. Monk agreed to serve one year as Vice Chairman, other committees remained the same as last year. It was agreed that the Council, out of its reserve fund of 4000, would provide third party funding to any grant that the village hall may be able to obtain, this to a maximum of 2000 and also make a grant of 1300 towards the project, the committee were also advised to approach the Council again if problems occurred as it was felt the hall was an essential asset to village life and should be maintained. It was also agreed to grant to the Table Tennis Group an amount to cover hire charges for the use of Gt. Stukeley village hall for six months, this money was to be paid directly to the village hall as a deposit against hire charges. It was agreed that the vacancy on the Council should be advertised and if no election was requested the members would co-opt a replacement for Mr. Pinner, preferably from Lt. Stukeley at their meeting on 7 th May 2012 as Mr. Pinner had been the Councils only representative from that village. Michael. J. Newman, Clerk & RFO. Mary Alleyne-James Event Organizer on behalf The Stukeleys Women s Institute Tel: Great Stukeley Village Hall Fundraising Ferret Evening 24 th March 2012 Comments: I would like to thank everyone involved in the Ferret Racing Evening on the 24 th March and, in particular Mary Alleyne-James, for organizing the event. A wonderful, fun evening, the racing (I had two winners!), the meal and the friendly company. Jayne Clifton We had a great evening last Saturday at the Great Stukeley Village Hall. We hadn t known what to expect from a Ferret Racing Evening and were fascinated to find out what happened. It was our first visit to the Village Hall for such an event as we do not live in the Village. The evening was a riot-we joined a very lively bunch of people from the Village as there was nowhere else for the four of us to sit together and they were great fun. The racing itself was very entertaining with everyone shouting their ferrets on but they have minds of their own and do exactly as they want. We had to remember that the first nose out of the run did not win-it was the first tail!. Our ticket money included a first-class steak and ale pie followed by trifle. The whole event was a triumph and our thanks go to Mary Alleyne-James and the Committee for organizing it so well. When is the next one please?. Christine Tewson

7 The Fundraising Ferret Racing Evening Saturday 24 th March 2012 After 7 months of planning it all came together when we were putting up the decorations for the red, white & blue themed event and John Oldfield raised our Union Jack Flag in the centre of the Village Hall on Friday 23 rd March 2012 Late on Saturday afternoon Chris Tyler of The International Ferret Rescue and his team of four helpers set up the race track for their 36 live Ferrets well in time for the arrival of our eighty-four guests. Our exciting evening began with the first of seven races creating a buzz of anticipation which lasted throughout the event. Mid-way through the evening we were served a delicious supper thanks to Jan Tildens superb cooking with a great surprise dessert-trifle. Sincere thanks are due to the Village Hall Committee. Extensive help was received from Nicola Oldfield who designed and printed the tickets and made sense of Barrie James Ferret Sales to produce the excellent Race Card.Nicola also ran the computer(with appreciated help from Alan Robertson) needed for the evenings betting. Ann Monk helped Nicola & John at the Tote Table while Jan Sly thoughtfully donated the centre piece flowers for each table and Sue Parkin provided the tablecloths. The Kitchen Angels-Jayne Clifton, Margaret Helme, Michael Monk, Joan Gray, Linda Hutchings, Terry Goodwin and Phyllis Trundle excelled themselves. Iain Shaw, Richard Ford, John Oldfield, Philip Fielding and Barrie James generously gave their time to the set-up and clear-up while Jenny Corney & Christine Tewson helped me with the Raffle. Many non-villagers attended as well as some Great Stukeley residents whose faces were new to us. Sue & George Wojtowicz generously donated their cash win on the 7th Auction Race to the Village Hall Funds. Aside from a superb evening of entertainment the Village Hall raised 1, for our funds. Sincere thanks are due to International Ferret Rescue, to those who attended and to our sponsors and those donating their services and the raffle prizes.they all helped to make the evening such great fun and to raise badly needed funds. The all-in ticket price includes entrance to the Spectacular, the return coach journey and a tip for the driver. We have been extremely lucky to have been allocated our preferred date of Sunday 18 th November 2012 for the 2pm performance: the most desirable(and requested)day of the week and time. Please watch this space for payment details in the next, June, issue of the Parish Magazine. Mary Alleyne-James Tel Royal London Tour Tuesday 11 th September 2012 On Tuesday 11 th September 2012 we will be in the entertaining company of a very well informed Blue Badge Guide for the whole day helping us to make the most of our ROYAL LONDON TOUR. We will meet our guide in London at St. Paul s Cathedral at 10.30am which means that we will be making an early departure by coach from the Great Stukeley Village Hall. Nineteen State Rooms at Buckingham Palace will be open on the day of our visit. The State Rooms are lavishly furnished with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection. These will include paintings by Canaletto, Rembrandt and Rubens;exquisite Sevres porcelain and fine English and French furniture. The Exhibition for 2012 is DIAMONDS:A Jubilee Celebration. This spectacular exhibition shows the many ways in which diamonds have been used by British Monarchs over the last 200 years. The exhibition includes a number of the Queen s personal jewels-those inherited by Her Majesty or acquired during her reign. The exhibition reveals how many of these extraordinary stones have undergone a number of transformations having been recut or incorporated into new settings during their fascinating history. 9 Stukeleys Country Hotel Refurbishment (Below Left) After years of being accustomed to the Ivy look of the Hotel, owner Liam decided it was time for a change. The Ivy had grown strong and thick and was actually pushing the signage off the wall, so local tradesman Pete was tasked with the clean up. Removing the faded red and now damaged sign revealed an even older sign no one can remember being there! The ivy was removed and the repair of the sign was completed before being carefully re-painted. Another local and hotel regular, cherry-tree Bob, provided assistance to ensure the new sign was successfully reinstalled. To complete the new look exterior, the benches were repaired and refurbished and with the addition of new umbrellas, provided a welcome face lift for the hotel, many thanks to Pete for all his hard work. Clare Pond to take part in Cycle Challenge (Above Right) I am supporting the Bob Champion Cancer Trust charity by taking part in the cycle team's challenge riding from Land's End to John O'Groats May. I am connected to this particular charity through the link with my uncle, Josh Gifford, who sadly passed away recently. Some of you will already know that he was part of the team's fairy tale ending of winning the Grand National in 1981, as he trained the race horse Aldaniti which Bob Champion rode against all odds, for horse & rider. I'm also taking on the Bob Champion Cancer Trust LeJog cycle challenge as a little celebration of my recovery from a snapped ACL & reconstructive surgery just over 2 years ago. Several close family friends have been touched by cancer & it is bravery that is required from all those connected to them in helping with their recovery. Some have asked 'Is it bravery or madness to do this cycle challenge'. I think both, but I'll let you decide the ratios ;-) It would be wonderful if you could help support these brave people by donating as much as you can to this GREAT charity. A huge THANK YOU in advance. The link is:

11 GREAT STUKELEY VILLAGE HALL UPDATE ON THE HEATING AND INSULATION We have a number of quotes for the various aspects of the heating and insulation works, and are now starting the somewhat lengthy process of filling in forms asking for grants. We are intending to insulate the walls and loft, replace the single glazed lower windows and fire doors with double glazed units, replace the boiler and upgrade the heating system. We are also investigating the cost and feasibility of putting PV solar panels on the roof. FERRET RACING The committee would like to thank Mary Alleyne-James for all the hard work she put into organising this event. The result was a very enjoyable and a very profitable evening. Well done Mary! TABLE TOP SALE The next one will be on Saturday 19 th May. As before, tables will cost 7. Contact Jan Sly to rent your table. Setting up on the day will be from 1pm. The sale will open at 2pm and end at 4pm. Refreshments will be on sale. AGM - 21st May 2012 Many thanks to all the current committee for their hard work and support during this past year. Please come to the AGM and give us your support. You may have new ideas for future events which we d like to hear about. Let us know if you are willing to stand for the committee, or you are willing to help in any other way. The committee should be made up in the following way 4 elected members, 8 representative members (see below) and up to 3 co-opted members. It would be good to see some younger people on the committee. These are the organisations entitled to have a representative on the committee Parish Council, Parochial Church Council, the WI, the Flower Show committee, the Bridge Club, the Heritage Group, the Craft Club and the new Table Tennis Club. If any of these organisations would like to nominate someone please contact Ann Monk ( , annmonk@hotmail.com) before 21 st May. If we don t hear from you we will assume that you do not wish to have a representative. RIGHT ROYAL QUIZ 1 st June starting at 7.30pm. All the questions will have a Royal connection, but will not just be about Royalty. Tickets are 8 per person, to include Jubilee themed refreshments, with a glass of bubbly. However, remember to bring your own drinks as well. Up to 6 people per team. Reserve your place by contacting Ann Monk JUBILEE PICNIC - 3 rd June This will be a lunchtime picnic, with people bringing food contributions from 11am onwards and the lunch beginning at 12 noon. Hopefully the venue will be West View. We are currently asking residents and getting permission from the County Council to close the road. If the venue changes for any reason notices will be put up around the village. At present we only have one volunteer willing to help with the organisation of this event. The committee is very busy trying to raise the money to get the heating and insulation in the hall sorted, and really needs outside help. MURDER MYSTERY EVENING: This will be on 12 th October so make a note in your diary! Ann Monk

13 Dear Residents, Huntingdon Charity 10k Race The third Huntingdon Charity 10k Race is set to take place on Sunday June 17 th (Father s Day) and this year the event promises to be bigger and better than before. Hullabaloo, a new Huntingdonshire fund raising group, is organising the race and there will also be a 3k Fun Run and a community fair this year, making it a great day out for the whole family. The race venue has changed and will be held at the old Alconbury airfield, with kind permission of Urban and Civic, who are not only hosting it but are actively helping us in a number of ways. Our race has already raised over 8k for local charities and six new charities have been chosen by Hullabaloo to benefit from the profits of this year s event. They are all based in and around Huntingdonshire and support disabled and disadvantaged children and young people. We have increased the field to 1,000 places for the 10k Run and, with a further 250 places in the Fun Run, we expect to attract quite a crowd, and hope to raise even more funds for charity. The 10k will start from the southern end of the runway, on the Urban and Civic site. The runners will exit the runway near Prestley Wood, following the bridleway at the back of Owl End. They will then pass Grange Farm and, just prior to entering Green End, will turn right into the field. The route will cross the park land, with kind permission of local land owners, to Beech Avenue, Elm Road and back along Owl End where they will return to the airfield. Further information and a detailed map of the route is available on Obviously, a small section of the race is on public roads in Great Stukeley, and we are very grateful to local residents for their support and patience during the hour or so when runners are expected on this section (between around 10:20 and 11:30 am). There will be marshals stationed along the route, and we would appreciate the help of car drivers in listening to their safety instructions, and the help of dog owners in keeping dogs away from runners for this short time. The runners would also appreciate any cheering, clapping and encouragement from you as they pass your home! In previous years many runners and marshals commented on how much they appreciated the support they received from the local residents. If any of you feel that you could help as marshals, this would be gratefully received. Please contact Bob Hulstrom, or Jane Morris on (home) or mobile (for Bob), or bobhulstrom@thinkpositive.co.uk. Or- why not sign up for the 10K race or the fun run, see: Don t forget that every penny raised goes directly to help local charities! Yours faithfully, Bob Hulstrom

"This race is open to everyone, young and old, either by running the fun run, the 10k race or simply supporting the many charities and other stalls at the fair. "Over and above all this, while bringing the community together; the event will benefit many local charities. "I do hope that the sun shines down on Huntingdon on 17th June and wish all those taking part - in whatever capacity - a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day." Race Director Bob Hulstrom said: "The race has directly raised more than 8,000 for local good causes since 2010 and we hope to double that in "This is a local race, organised by local volunteers to benefit local good causes. As well as the donation of all the profits from the race to local children's charities, runners can also raise personal sponsorship for the causes closest to their own hearts." 16 Terry Pinner Retires Parish Councillor Vice Chairman Chairman

17 THE STUKELEYS PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING. I have to report that, sadly, Terry Pinner has tendered his resignation as a councillor at this meeting, this after 41 years as a councillor, thirty seven as chairman. Terry joined the Council in 1971 whilst he was still in his early thirties, when the Council had an average age of well above sixty, progressing to vice chairman in 1975 and after the retirement of Mr. Waldock took over the chairmanship in He was part of the group of people who obtained loans and grants to enable the building of Gt. Stukeley village hall and he was also a key figure in the Parish Councils purchase of the land next to the Three Horse Shoes from the brewery, as a recreation area. He lead the team that initiated the street lighting of Ermine Street and ensured the County Council adopted the maintenance and supply costs. He was always very shrewd in the amounts of expenditure the Council incurred so much so that the Precept, the money we all pay for village services was kept as low as practicable, now 38 per annum, compared with most parishes of our size which average closer to 60 per annum. He also negotiated, with others, our present traffic calming which although not perfect, was the best that could be afforded by the authorities and which has reduced traffic speeds. Terry, along with Kallum Kerr, was also instrumental in the design and installation of the millennium village signs. His efforts over many years with our neighbours at RAF Alconbury ensured a relationship that was more open and productive than anyone could have hoped for with such a large military presence on our doorsteps. Terry was proud of the villages and was proactive in the protection and maintenance of both churches and both village halls, always attending their meetings when help was required. He could be seen most days on his horses riding round the villages keeping a close eye on everything and making sure that it was kept clean, tidy and the grass everywhere was regularly tended, he was very keen on the daffodils which were planted at his behest. Terry s experience and expertise will be greatly missed by the Parish Council, but he will continue to live in the Parish and no doubt will be keeping a close eye on us! We sincerely thank Terry for all his hard work and dedication and wish him a happy and long retirement from Public Life. The Council welcomes Sue Parkin, who was Terry s vice chairman, as it s new chairman and wishes her every success. Please Note. Terry s resignation has now caused a vacancy on the Council and providing no election has been demanded by 26 th April 2012 the members will be looking to co-opt a replacement at their meeting on the 7 th May 2012 at Gt. Stukeley village hall. Any interested parties should notify the clerk in writing prior to that meeting to be considered to Hillside, 42. Low Road, Little Stukeley, Huntingdon, Cambs, PE28 4BA or via to stukeleyspc@tiscali.co.uk Michael. J. Newman, Clerk & RFO.

19 Diamond Jubilee 1897 Many thanks for the following and photo received from Penny Glover. I d be interested in hearing from anyone who recognises someone in the photo. The most interesting will be in next month s Stukeleys Parish Magazine. Hi Martyn, I have attached a photograph that you might like to consider for the magazine. This shows the residents of Little Stukeley assembled at the junction of Church Way and Ermine Street to celebrate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in With the diamond jubilee celebrations coming up this year I thought this might be a nice historical link. The picture belongs to my Uncle Alan Adams and he can pick out his mother and grandparents. I wonder if anyone else in the Stukeleys can identify ancestors on the picture. With best wishes, Penny Glover

21 THE STUKELEYS WI Meeting held on Wednesday 11 th April 2012 The President, Jan Sly welcomed nineteen members to the meeting. Six apologies for absence were received. We sang Jerusalem. The Minutes of the previous meeting were read and with one amendment it was agreed that they were accurate and that Jan should sign them. Jan thanked Nita Charter and Deanna Strange for preparing refreshments, Deanna Strange for providing the draw prize and Maureen Sewell for the Curtis bowl arrangement. Jan reported that the next Table Top sale would be Saturday 19 th May at the village hall. Members agreed that we should do a hamper and strings with a fruit bowl as this had been successful on the previous occasion. Donations need to be given to Jan by the next meeting on 9 th May. She asked the meeting for fundraising ideas for our chosen charity, the village hall. The last fund raiser for the village hall was the ferret racing, organised by Mary Alleyne-James which raised 1,114. Members who had attended said how much they had enjoyed the evening and congratulated Mary for all her hard work in making it such a success. The next Songs of Praise is on 29 th April at 9.30 and it is the Bridge Club s turn to choose hymns and do the readings. Many members said that they would attend. The ACWW walk would start after the service at Members participating should convene on the corner of Owl End/Elm Road. Big Walk Little Splash was discussed again. Members were reminded of the Spring Group Meeting at Hartford on 24 th April and lifts were organised. Competition: 60s record sleeve and a doll in sixties clothes. Mrs Linda Hutchings was welcomed as speaker and gave a talk on Companion Gardening. She explained that she had set up her own business locally working together with people with disabilities in their own gardens, using plants and gardening as a form of therapy. For example, she creates sensory paths for the blind so that they can navigate their way through the garden, using lavender, camomile and even curry plants. She brought some plants with her with interesting textures and scents and passed them around the meeting. Mrs Hutchings strongly believes that gardening improves muscle tone, mobility through exercise and mental health through a sense of purpose and achievement. Doris Sadler gave the vote of thanks. The competition was two plants in a small pot 1 st prize: Jenny Thilo Draw Prize: Sheila Stephenson 2 nd prize: Sarah Toyn 3 rd prize: Marlene Garner Roll Call: your favourite perfumed plant Various notices were read out. Mary Alleyne-James told members of her fundraising idea which had been highly recommended by another WI group. Members agreed that it was a good idea and that Mary should book it for the Autumn. Sheila Stephenson urged members to knit fish and chip baby jumpers for South African babies (so called because they are wrapped in newspaper and have no clothes). They should be in dark colours (with stripes if possible) as they do not get washed. A pattern was handed out to members. 23 The Stukeleys Heritage Group Over 30 people attended our meeting on 18 th April to hear Stephen Macaulay and Jo Richards talk about the Jigsaw Community Archaeology Project which is aimed at helping and supporting local groups in discovering more about the past. We are now considering becoming affiliated to the Project so that we can gain from their expertise. As well as practical help in setting up archaeology projects they can assist with archiving and websites, which could be very useful to us. In the discussion which followed the presentation, the Group indicated that they were particularly interested in learning how to field walk (picking up finds from ploughed land) and finding out more about Prestley Wood (thought to be a 13 th Century moated manor house site ) working with Urban&Civic to develop a management plan and possible investigation looking into the possibility of archaeology on the grassed areas of the Airfield investigating the remains of deserted settlements on Grange Farm Sadly one of our keen members, John Lovell is unwell and was unable to make the meeting. The Group sends their very best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. It was agreed that Nicola Oldfield should represent the Group on Great Stukeley Village Hall Management Committee. Our next meeting would normally be on the evening of Wednesday, 20 th June, but instead we will be taking a nostalgic trip to the seaside that day (see separate notice), so our next evening meeting will be: 7.30 pm Wednesday 15 th August when we will be focussing on weddings, so please bring along your photos of any wedding which has a connection with The Stukeleys or Stukeley residents for scanning so that we can see how traditions and dress have changed over the years. 25 Update on Alconbury Enterprise Zone Green Light for Enterprise Mission In our last update we were awaiting the decision of Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) on our Enabling Application which sought permission to put in a new construction entrance and lay some of the new infrastructure the site requires as an Enterprise Zone. HDC s Development Management Panel met on Monday 27 th February and unanimously approved the application, with a series of conditions to ensure that we manage the impact of noise, dust, traffic and other issues during implementation. The details and decision notice are available through the Planning pages on HDC s website using the application reference FUL. The implementation of the plans will start over the summer and we will keep you updated on progress. Next steps: Outline Application We have been continuing to develop our Outline Application for the site in discussions with stakeholders and working through the feedback from local communities. This will set out our plans to create a high quality mixed use development with space for businesses, homes, community facilities and green space. We plan to hold a series of public meetings to discuss the Application before it is submitted and will keep you updated as we agree the dates for those with the District and parish councils. Supporting local businesses, jobs and skills We are also evolving our plans to ensure the development maximises the opportunity to support local businesses and get local people into work or training for employment. This includes working up a procurement strategy to bring local businesses into the contracting process, and working with the Jobcentre Plus, Huntingdonshire Regional College, HDC and local voluntary and community groups to set up a brokerage scheme to target jobs locally, promote on-site training, apprenticeships, and work placements. We hope to pilot these approaches in the next few months before rolling them out later this year. Questions and Feedback If you have any questions for us you can: - write to us at Urban&Civic, 137 North Gate, Alconbury Airfield, Alconbury, Huntingdon, Cambs, PE28 4WX, - me at rbritton@urbanandcivic.com - or call me on / You can also follow our progress through subscribing to our e-newsletter at or following us on

If you need help with transport to any of the meetings just call Pete or Penny as above. If you would like more information about Grace Fellowship visit our website, Which Church? This is a question often asked the simple answer is the one that you feel right for you. Why so many different Churches? My answer is just as I am the son of the same parents of my 2brothers and 1 sister we are all part of the same family, we were raised the same way with the same standards but as we started our families we each used the standards that we grew up with however sometimes we would see things in a different way, but that did not mean we were not part of the family So it is in the in the Christian Church we have the same Father who loves us so much that He gave His son Jesus to pay for our sins if we believe in him He would forgive us and we became part of the family of God and as such He ask us to meet together and give thanks to Him for His Grace. Now some like to do this one way others another way, that s like us as brothers and sisters we have our own way of thanking our Parents for their love and care for us Konrad Adenauer said We all live under one sky But we see different horizons. The main thing is that we are looking and seeking to serve God in the way we are called remembering to read the instruction manual. I think that Christians we need to work together to make this place the place that God wants it to be this is my Prayer will you join with me Pete Bourne
