2 Page Two Third Sunday of Lent March 23, 2014 DIVINE AND HUMAN THIRST Jesus had a thirst that brought Him to Jacob s Well. Yes, he wanted cool water, rest and refreshment. The Gospel tells us, He was tired from His journey. We sense, from other encounters, that he was always drawn to those who needed Him the most. That was a thirst not easily quenched in a sinful, world. Even though He was tired and thirsty, He cared that a Samaritan woman chose an unpopular time to draw water from Jacob s Well. She probably tried to avoid being stared at and whispered about by those of better reputation. Jesus surprised her. He broke with convention by asking her for a drink. In His dialogue with her, he promises her the gift of living water that would satisfy her thirst permanently. He was really offering her the way to salvation! He did so knowing full well what kind of woman she was. Jesus tells her, Go call your husband and come back. When she confessed, I do not have a husband, Jesus reveals what she tried to conceal. You are right in saying, I do not have a husband. For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. The Samaritan woman was amazed. While she accepted Him as a prophet, she did not recognize Him as the Messiah until He identified that he was. The woman leaves her water jar at the well and spreads the news that Jesus could well be the Messiah. Still questioning she, a sinner and a Samaritan, is actually evangelizing. The Gospel concludes by telling us that many came to believe because of the woman s testimony but Many more began to believe in Him because of His word... They tell her, We no longer believe because of your word, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world. Jesus, in His thirst for souls, has channeled living waters to God-forsaken Samaria. He chooses a woman with a scarlet reputation to initiate His saving work! It is astonishing, but true, that Jesus redemption of a few Samaritans anticipates His thirst on the Cross. That thirst for sinners was consummated in the Holiest of Sacrifices. With the blood and water from His wounded side, living water would spread to the whole sinful world for the redemption of the human race. Reflection on this Sunday s Gospel can lead all of us to consider how like the Woman at the Well we are. Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. Nothing can be concealed from Him. How can He love us with all our sins? Does that touch our hearts? Can we care enough to listen and respond with sorrow for our sins and a real desire to accept the grace of redemption? St. Gregory the Great urged the faithful to compunction. It is a word strange to many of us - - a striking point of conscience. St. Gregory called compunction the golden spur. For him, compunction bears fruit in our lives as purity, light and interior liberty. St. Gregory describes two kinds of compunction: the soul that thirsts for God is first sorry in his or her heart from fear, and then from love. May this Sunday s Gospel help us to value the living waters of Baptism and Penance. Let sorrow for sin be a golden spur to accept Christ as the way to satisfy our thirst for God and God s thirst for us! -Fr. Luczak

Father Bob is a Franciscan Friar and priest and is presently ar s c director of Chiesa Nuova, a Franciscan ministry for the performing arts in Chicago. He s served in parishes throughout the Midwest, including 18 years at St. Peter s Church in the Loop. Published and recorded Fr. Bob has been involved in the liturgical and musical life of the Church his en re life. He con nues that mission by composing, performing and serving as preacher and priest throughout the Chicago area and beyond. USED EYEGLASS COLLECTION Do you have any prescription and reading glasses that you do not use anymore? Start collecting them and donate them to EYEsee during the April 5-6 weekend parish collection drive! EYEsee is an allstudent outreach mission that collects and recycles used eyeglasses for distribution to underprivileged people in third world countries. St. Viator High School students will be in the Holy Family Room during all the weekend Masses on April 5-6 to receive your donations of eyeglasses. Please note that they cannot accept monetary donations. Our other alms recipient that weekend will be the Knights of Columbus for their work on behalf of the cognitively challenged and learning disabled. FOOD DONATION BIN HOLY FAMILY ROOM Beginning Sunday, March 23 rd, you may donate canned food and other non-perishable food items for the needy by placing them in the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry Food Donation Bin located in the Holy Family Room. We appreciate all items, but we are always in need of fruit, cereal and hot chocolate. Donations can be made all year long. 5 Page Five Third Sunday of Lent March 23, 2014 TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES SIJ Friday Night at the Movies presents Jesus of Nazaret, March 25, April 1 and April 8. Bring your families, friends and neighbors to see this 6 ½ hour epic of the life of Christ that was presented as an NBC mini -series in 1977 with outstanding reviews. Doors open each night at 6:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m. There s no charge for the movie, which will be shown on a 10 ft. wide screen. The popcorn and beverages are complimentary as well. It will include hymns which consider the passion & Death of Our Lord, lamentations which express sorrow for sins, and sympathetic conversations of the soul with the Blessed Mother, and a homily in both languages. THE PASSION OF CHRIST The Roman Catholic theatrical prayer group Wieczernik Cenacle, a non-profit theatrical organization, at St. Hyacinth s Basilica in Chicago will present the Passion of Christ at two local parishes. They will perform at St. John Brebeuf Parish on Sunday, March 23, at 1:30 p.m. (English) and 7 p.m. (Polish). They will also perform on Saturday, March 29, at St. Catherine Laboure Parish in Glenview at 6 p.m. (English). It is the story of the life of Jesus filled with compassion, service and salvation with all passages taken from Scripture, played out by a cast of non-professional actors and accompanied by moving music and original set design Free will offerings greatly appreciated. A Holy Hour will be offered each Thursday evening during Lent in Church before the Blessed Sacrament from 7:00-8:00 p.m. March 27th April 3rd, April 10th Adoration is a time for praising, adoring, blessing, giving ourselves to God and thanking Him for all that He is for us and for all we are to become through Him. It is truly prayer of the heart. The prayer is three-fold: a chant; a prayerful meditation which will be offered by Deacon Rod: SILENCE - a short meditative time for each of us to adore Christ, speak our own words to Him or simply listen. Reflection: ` The woman consistently misunderstands Jesus only to be led to gradual understanding her suspicion turns into belief that spurs her on to become a witness her words of testimony to the Samaritans plant seeds of belief in Jesus among the people. And after hosting Jesus for two days, they own their conversion What opportunities do I have to engage in life-giving conversations? How eager am I to invite others to come and see Jesus? 9 Page Nine Third Sunday of Lent March 23, 2014 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Third Sunday of Lent Tuesday: The Annunciation of the Lord Friday: Abstinence Especially during the Lent and Easter seasons, we are very conscious of the communal nature of baptism. We stand witness to the baptism of adults at the Easter Vigil in many parishes, and countless parishes celebrate festive baptisms for infants. The rule for celebrating baptism is that it be only once a day in any parish church, a sign of the Church s desire that baptism be the work of the gathered community. Private baptism is therefore a misnomer, since all baptisms, even emergency baptisms for infants in danger of death, are a public act of entrance in to the Body of Christ, the Church. In an emergency, and providing the parents desire it, anyone can baptize by pouring water and saying, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. But then afterward the Church is encouraged to supply what is missing: the gathered assembly to proclaim and hear God s word, the promises, the naming, the anointings, the clothing with a white garment, the candle, the Lord s Prayer, and the solemn blessing of the parents at the altar.
