3 From Pastor Ted s Desk... I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever, for great is your steadfast love toward me. ~Psalm 86:12-13a This spring, Marcia and I had a chance to hear again Kevin Kling, a Minnesota-born author, actor and professional story-teller. His routine based largely on stories from his life is at times very funny, and at other times insightful and thought-provoking. One thing that I appreciated from his monologue (and which is also included in his book, The Dog Says How), is what he calls the three types of prayer. Kevin recalled, When I was a kid, I prayed to get things. Specifically, he remembered praying that his parents would get him a squirrel monkey! (They never did.) God invites us to bring all of our needs to him in prayer, so praying for things is OK. God is not some magic genie, though, giving us whatever we ask for, but rather a generous and loving provider, giving us those things that we need. Kevin s life changed in 2011 when a car pulled out in front of the motorcycle on which he was riding. He received severe injuries and nearly died. He had many surgeries, but never regained use of his right arm. For a month after his surgeries food had no taste, but one day his girlfriend persuaded him to eat an apple. Suddenly he could taste the powerful sweetness of that apple. He writes, I blurted out, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for this life. And that s when my prayers shifted, again, to giving thanks. And I don t know whether good things happen more because I was saying thank you, or I was just noticing them more. But blessings started to emerge from the curses. (p. 150). I hope that it will not take major trauma like a motorcycle accident for us to discover this third kind of prayer. As the Psalmist said, God s steadfast love is great. May God s abundant provision and his forgiveness through Jesus Christ, lead us to those prayers of thanksgiving for life itself, and for so much more. Pastor Ted Kunze Kevin recalled a different sort of prayer as a teen and young adult. Prone to some foolish and risky behavior, he recalls often praying, God, please get me out of this. Get me out of this and I ll never do anything stupid again as long as I live (p. 148). The fact that he remembers making this prayer several times indicates both God s generous care helping him in times of crisis, and also our failure to keep our promises to God! 4 5

5 Financial Information Youth: ELCA College Scholarship for 2016 Will hold a full youth committee meeting next Tuesday 5:30pm Propose $ from ELCA College Scholarship go towards Rebekah Concordia- Moorhead for fall 2016 Currently there is $ in the fund Fellowship and Service: Group 1 and Group 2 each served a funeral this past month Group 3 is up next Group 4 served a special event - the blood mobile; Group 1 is up next Each group served a supper for VBS students and helpers. Approx. 110 students were served each night. Many thanks to all those that donated food and worked at all of these events!!! It was appreciated A new Bunn coffee maker is being ordered. Memorial money from the family of Lola Rambosky has been donated in Lola's memory. We thank Lola's 2 daughters, Janet and Jean, for this donation. The coffee maker will be paid for with the memorial money. There is approx. $ in checking. Several bills will be paid for - the bible school supper and supplies for the kitchen No Board meeting in July unless needed. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran s financial status. Following our annual meeting, the congregation voted on the 2016 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $21, each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. 6 Summer Stewardship The blessings that we receive from God continue throughout the year. As the writer of Lamentations put it, The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness! (Lam. 3:22-23) Our grateful response to these blessings should continue all year, as well. We show our gratitude to God as we serve God in daily life, as we gather to worship and praise God, and as we return a portion of our income for the work of the Church. Those offerings are important for continuing the work of the church throughout the summer months, and as we make plans and purchases for the fall. Thank you for your generous response to God s great generosity! Saturday Services At Shetek Worship services are again being offered Saturday afternoons at 5:30 PM at Shetek Lutheran Ministries, through Saturday, August 13 th. These services will be held in the Chapel at the camp or, if weather permits, on the benches at the fire ring behind the chapel. These informal services have music led by camp staff, with the sermon brought by various area pastors. Our pastors will each lead one service at the camp on July 16 th and August 13 th. Please join us at the camp on those days for worship we will not have our Saturday afternoon service at Christ Lutheran those dates. Vacation Time Pastor Ted will be taking a week of vacation July 12 through 18. Pastor Dawn will be available during that time for pastoral care, and to lead worship. Mission Support Jesus said, Go and make disciples of all nations ~Matthew 28:16 Our Mission Support offerings go where we cannot travel. Our ELCA has 305 mission personnel serving in 45 countries! 120 new congregations are under development in the United States. Your gifts to Christ Lutheran designated Mission Support will help this work! Designated envelopes are available in the church narthex or use your own. ELCA Churchwide Assembly 980 ELCA Lutherans from the 65 Synods throughout the country will gather in New Orleans August 8 th -13 th for the 2016 Churchwide Assembly. The theme will be: Freed and Renewed in Christ: 500 Years of God s Grace in Action. Please keep our Church in prayer for a safe and Spirit-led Assembly. 7 Prayer Requests Has something come up in your life recently that you want your church to pray about? Perhaps you have received some difficult news. Or, maybe you have a reason to rejoice and you want to share this good news. Regardless of what your concern is, we want to hear from you and pray with and for you. Whether your concern is personal or a shared concern about something happening in the world, please communicate to us your concerns and prayer requests. Please be sure to indicate if this is something you want included in the more public church prayers of intercession, one of the church prayer chains or if this is a more private concern that you only want to share with the pastors. We will honor your specific request. You may make prayer requests by speaking with one of the pastors, or, if it is during the week, to the church office secretary, Dawn Mouw. If your concern arises over the weekend, you may give your written prayer request to an usher and ask them to pass it along to a pastor. This is especially helpful if there is late-breaking world or community news. As the pastors prepare for worship and lead services at Faith before coming to Christ Lutheran they may not be on top of the latest news. Thank you for helping us to be a community that lifts one another s concerns to God in prayer. Help needed at Shetek Lutheran Ministries S.O.S. Camp July All ages are welcome! Our congregation has a valuable opportunity in our own backyard to share the love of Christ at Shetek Lutheran Ministries this summer during S.O.S. Camp the week of July S.O.S. Camp is offered every summer to individuals with developmental and/or physical special needs. This camp requires a large number of staff and volunteers in order for each camper to have a good experience. This year our congregation is invited to help with meals throughout the week of S.O.S. camp. Individuals and families are encouraged to sign up on sheets found outside the church office or you may contact Christ Lutheran at or slaytonchristlutheran@gmail.com. There are two seatings for each meal during S.O.S. Camp. They are tentatively scheduled as follows: Breakfast: 7:30 am Lunch: 11:30 am Supper: 5:30 pm Volunteers will be asked to arrive about one hour prior to each meal and will be assigned age-appropriate duties, such as cleaning and setting tables, serving food and beverages, carrying trays or spending time outside with campers as they wait for their meals. More details and information will be provided as it is made available. There is also a need for help doing laundry at the camp during the week. This is a great way for families with school-age children to be in ministry with and for others. Be prepared for God to bless your experience as you share your hearts and your lives with others

8 14 Synod Assembly Report Pastor Dawn Quame, Pastor Ted and Marcia Kunze, and Marv Isder attended the Southwestern Minnesota Synod Assembly held June 10 and 11 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. The Rev. Dr. Robin Steinke, President of Luther Seminary in St. Paul spoke to the 450+ delegates, on behalf of the ELCA. Chaplain Brian Konkol of Gustavus led three Bible Study sessions. 14 workshops were offered each day during lunch, posing the challenge of which workshop to attend! There were few resolutions this year, but one that was passed approved abolishing the statewide organization of Lutheran Campus Ministry of Minnesota. This does not indicate a lack of support for campus ministry, which will continue on our state campuses including Southwest Minnesota State University, Marshall. The purpose is to eliminate one level of bureaucracy, with each campus ministry site being supported by local congregations and their Synods. The biggest emphasis of the weekend, though, was the launch of a new initiative within our Synod called, Embrace God s Mission. Equip God s People. The goal is to help our congregations to become stronger, and to support further development of lay leaders and clergy in order that we may better serve God s mission in our area and throughout the world. The three main parts of this initiative are, Deepen Congregational Vitality, Enhance Local and Global Mission, and Develop Servant Leaders (lay and clergy). As a part of this last section, a Ministerial Excellence Fund will be started with a matching challenge grant by the Lilly Foundation of $250,000! This will eventually provide at least $500,000 to help pastors struggling with educational debt, difficult emergency medical expenses, and inadequate pensions, in order that their energies may be freed for ministry. Watch for much more information to be coming out about this Embrace God s Mission. Equip God s People emphasis. Pizza On The Farm! Shalom Hill Farm, the retreat center near Windom, invites everyone to come out for homemade Pizza on the Farm the third Tuesdays of each month through September. Live music will be provided for entertainment! It is a great opportunity to see their facility, their gardens and their animals, eat great food, and share fellowship with some of our neighbors in Christ. Pizza is served from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Two large pieces of homemade pizza, salad and a cold drink for $10 Adults & $6 kids. (Gluten free pizza is available.) We are planning to go out as a group on Tuesday, July 19 th, leaving from Christ Lutheran at 5:30 PM. This is a great inter-generational social event. Plan to go with us! Bloodmobile August 11 Christ Lutheran will again be the site for the Red Cross Bloodmobile on Thursday, August 11 th. The need for blood is constant for people facing surgery, for accident victims, and for those with certain blood diseases. If you are healthy and in the age range for being a donor, please consider making a donation! Donors are welcome to drop-in, but if you are able to make an appointment that would be helpful. 10 Women of Christ Lutheran Church Parish Nurse Ministry Our Mission: To mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. July Visitation: Faith Quilting Monday, June 27 and Tuesday, June 28 at 1:00 pm Addictions. Do you know anyone with an addiction? Or perhaps you yourself have battled one. We can be addicted to lots of different things, sometimes with serious consequences. We will be having a Conversation about Addictions on Sunday morning during the 9 AM hour before worship on July 10. Marshal Isder, a member of our congregation, will be leading our conversation. He is very knowledgeable about addictions, and also very passionate about wanting to help people who have an addiction, or who want to learn more about them. So please mark your calendar and join us on Sunday, July 10 at 9 AM in the Chapel/Lounge. Hospitality Among Women of the Church In July and August the women of Christ Lutheran Church will be practicing hospitality by sharing gifts with shut-ins in their places of residence. Our July Bible Study is the gift to be shared with the residents at Lindenwood and anyone else who wishes to come. Pastor Dawn will lead us on Wednesday, July 13 at 9:30 AM as we study the Word and enjoy treats together. In August, we will share gifts with residents of nursing homes, assisted living homes and with those who continue to reside as shut-ins in their own homes. We meet in the church kitchen on Wednesday, August 3 rd at 9:00 AM to assemble treat plates, and go out to deliver them. The Women of Christ Lutheran Church includes any woman who is available to join us at these events. Feel the hospitality as we share the Word of God with all members of our congregation in their current living situations. We welcome all women to join us at Lindenwood on July 13 at 9:30 AM and at the church kitchen on August 3 rd at 9:00 AM to share hospitality in Jesus name

Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been in situations where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about achieving 101%? What equals 100% in life? L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Is represented as: Then: H-A-R-D-W-O-R- K = 98% and K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E = 96% But, A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E = 100% AND, look how far the love of God will take you L-O-V-E-O-F-G-O-D = 101% Therefore, one can conclude with mathematical certainty that: While Hard work and Knowledge will get you close, and Attitude will get you there, it's the Love of God that will put you over the top! Don't believe something because it appears true; believe it because God's Word the Bible says it is true! 22 23

13 June 13, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them. Genesis 1:27 We are killing ourselves. We believe that all people are created in God s image. All of humanity bears a family resemblance. Those murdered in Orlando were not abstract others, they are us. But somehow, in the mind of a deeply disturbed gunman, the LGBTQ community was severed from our common humanity. This separation led to the death of 49 and the wounding of 54 of us. We live in an increasingly divided and polarized society. Too often we sort ourselves into like-minded groups and sort others out. It is a short distance from division to demonization. Yesterday, we witnessed the tragic consequences of this. There is another way. In Christ God has reconciled the world to God s self. Jesus lived among us sharing our humanity. Jesus died for us to restore our humanity. God invites us into this reconciling work. This must be our witness as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The perpetrator of this hate crime did not come out of nowhere. He was shaped by our culture of division, which itself has been misshapen by the manipulation of our fears. That is not who we are. St. Paul wrote, So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new. All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ. (II Corinthians 5:17-20) 24 Our work begins now. We need to examine ourselves, individually and as a church, to acknowledge the ways we have divided and have been divided. We must stand with people who have been othered. We must speak peace and reconciliation into the cacophony of hatred and division. We must live the truth that all people are created in God s image. This morning your churchwide staff came together to mourn and to pray. We prayed for those killed in Orlando and remembered the Charleston Nine killed only a year ago. We prayed for the family of the shooter, for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters and for our Muslim brothers and sisters who now face the threat of retaliation. And we prayed that the Prince of Peace will bring us to the day when we stop killing ourselves. Your sister in Christ, Elizabeth A.
