On Saturday, September 16th, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Birthright will be hosting their first annual Festival for Life at Peekskill s beautiful Riverfront Green. So let s celebrate life together! Birthright of Peekskill is a crisis pregnancy center in downtown Peekskill. They are part of an international organization which is non-denominational, non-political and devoted to helping mothers and their babies. LECTORS & EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS NEEDED Our Lord Jesus sends out his followers on a mission, God s call to service. We are in need of Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to serve at St. Columbanus Parish. If you are 18 years or older and a practicing Catholic, then we invite you to join our family of loving and faithful lay ministers of God. Think about it, talk about it with your family and friends, pray on it, and lift it up to God s will. 4 SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 As I mentioned last week, there is a second collection this weekend for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal and the Church in Latin America. We will probably be taking a special collection for the hurricane victims in Texas in the next week or two. We should pray for all people suffering from displacement from their homes, whether through natural disaster or religious persecution. I would like to thank Fr. Anthony for helping us out at Mass. He was welcome to continue doing a Sunday Mass here but has now been given another job by the archdiocese working on the canonization of Dorothy Day besides his regular job in the marriage tribunal. I also would like to thank Fr. Emmanuel for helping us out during the summer. We hope he will join us at St. Columbanus in the summer during the coming years Both priests were helpful to the parish during my illness. Depending on my health I hope to be back in a limited capacity beginning this week. Again, thanks for your prayers. As I previously wrote, I will be saying Mass ad orientem ( facing east ). This is a liturgical sense referring to the fact that the Church would say Mass facing the east in expectation of the second coming of Christ. This is not a going back but rather as the Holy Father has said, an implementation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council that have been misinterpreted and misused to foster Abuses never imagined by the church fathers. In the missal for Mass it says that at the sign of peace The priest turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands adds: The peace of the Lord be with you always. If the priest were already facing the people why would he need to be turned towards the people? The picture above is a picture from 2016 of Pope Francis saying Mass at the tomb of St. John Paul II in St. Peter s Basilica facing east. He and Pope Benedict every year have said Mass on the feast of our Lord s Baptism in the Sistine Chapel ad orientem. Indeed, Several Bishops in the U.S. have instructed their priests to offer Mass this way. It is always good to go to the original church documents than to rely on article writers who may have their own agendas. We are in need of Religious Ed. Teachers. If you are 18 years or older and you want to impart the true faith to the next generation please call our Rel. Ed. Office ( ). Married couples can also teach religion class together. We have sent in a contribution from our parish to the archdiocese for Hurricane Harvey relief. We will have a second collection next week, as well. As you may have noticed, at the beginning of Mass the entrance antiphon is being beautifully chanted as is the communion antiphon. We hope to put the music for the antiphons in the bulletin so those who wish to chant the antiphons may join in.
