3 ADDRESSING THE ACCUSATIONS OF ARCHBISHOP VIGANO REGARDING POPE FRANCIS (continued) If the accusations by Archbishop Vigano are true, we have a conundrum. The conundrum is that the Pope would be caught in a serious position of hypocrisy if he didn t resign but continued to ask bishops to resign who have done the same thing that he is accused of. If he no longer required bishops to resign for covering for priests, then we are back into the same mess that we were in. At the heart of this scandal is the fact that bishops covered for priests and let them continue in ministry. If the accusations are true, he is between a rock and a hard place if he does not resign. If the accusations are proven to be false, assuming Ab. Vigano sincerely believed them to be true, then shame on Ab. Vigano for making such accusations without sufficient knowledge and understanding of the facts. If they are lies, then God have mercy on Ab. Vigano. There is another scenario: the accusations are neither proven false nor true. If this is because the Pope remains silent and never addresses the accusations, then there will always be a cloud over his papacy and, in my opinion, he would lose most, if not all, credibility. If the Pope claims his innocence with sufficient explanation to put the accusations in doubt, or to demonstrate that he acted in ignorance of the exact nature of Pope Benedict s penalties against Ab. McCarrick and the exact nature of his sins and crimes, but not sufficiently to truly exonerate himself, then maybe he can continue his papacy with some credibility. However, even here it would be a tenuous credibility. I say this because if the Pope does not permit an independent investigation and release all the applicable documents, then I do not know how he can be fully exonerated. The Pope is not Jesus Christ, he is the vicar of Jesus Christ. For him to claim silence in imitation of Jesus is comparing apples with oranges. Besides, Jesus did not remain completely silent. While He did not respond directly to the false accusations and lies, He did refer to the evidence of His words and work, for which he was struck. Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said. When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Is that how you answer the high priest? Jesus answered him if I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me? John 18: Jesus remained silent before false accusations, it is true, but even here scripture is clear: Now the chief priests and the whole council sought testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many bore false witness against him, and their witness did not agree. Yet not even so did their testimony agree. Again the high priest asked him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am; and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven And the high priest tore his garments, and said, Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision? And they all condemned him as deserving death. Mark 14:55-64 The accusations against Jesus were obviously false and could not stand. He was crucified, not because of the false accusations, but because He declared that He is the Christ, the Son of the Blessed. The accusations against Pope Francis are not obviously false, and so far have not been contradicted. Fr. Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, also claimed silence and would not defend himself. Proven to be guilty, that silence was hollow. We are not Jesus Christ. If we are truly innocent and choose not to defend ourselves to false accusations in imitation of Christ, this may be praiseworthy if it involves only our credibility, and only if proven innocent. However, when it involves the credibility of the Church, the Pope has an obligation to defend her, for although he is not the Church and the Church is not his, he represents her in a singular way. If Ab. Vigano has spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if he has spoken rightly, why do you strike him? Ab. Vigano has been metaphorically struck by the personal attacks against him. There are already claims that the Vatican is looking for ways in canon law to penalize him for speaking out. If this is true, and the Pope does not have the accusations investigated in a credible manner, then the Pope might be silent with his tongue, but not with his authority. He would not only be not silent, but unlike Jesus, he would be striking back at his accuser. In Jesus and Mary,
