We picked up over 100 bags of groceries to bring to the pantry in Dorchester. This is a huge benefit to the operation, as it allows us to save a significant amount of money that normally would be spent in purchasing food from the Greater Boston Food Bank. Thank you all so much for your continued generosity. Sincerely, St. Matthew s Pantry Volunteers ADVENT MORNING PRAYER We will offer Advent morning prayer on Wednesdays during Advent. Please join the Church s prayer on this day. 5 INVITATION TO STUDY REVELATION The Scripture Study Group will be starting a new session on the book of Revelation, beginning Thursday, January 19, 2017, from 7:00 8:30 pm in McGann Hall, and continuing weekly for 11 weeks, finishing a week before Palm Sunday. [Jan 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, 23, Mar 2, 9, 16, 23, 30] If you have ever wondered what all the symbolism is about in Revelation, this would be a great time to listen to a gifted teacher of Biblical Salvation History and to discuss its meaning for us with our fellow parishioners. Prior participation in the earlier Jeff Cavins programs is not required to join this study session. Cost is $35 for lesson materials and contribution toward DVD set that s used in the program. Please notify the Parish Office ( X10; lmacmullin@sainteulalia.org) by Sunday, December 11th, of your interest in the program so we may order books. - PLEASE COMPLETE BY DECEMBER 11TH AND DROP IN THE OSR BOX OR BRING/MAIL TO PARISH OFFICE: I am interested in participating in this series: Name: THE UNBROKEN WORD Advent is normally one of my favorites seasons, a wonderful time of the year. The amazing gift being prepared for us over Christmas is often overrun by a lot of family busyness. There is much to be thankful for in this season, but instead of creating the runway for Peace on Earth by preparing soulfully for the arrival of the child Jesus, we become wrapped up, physically and metaphorically, in things of the world. Perhaps because Advent does not give us that call to action which Lent seems to, it may be overlooked. I don t write this as chastisement in any way. I am as guilty as any. We want to give to others, especially those close to us, but what about the forgotten in the world during Advent. A one billion dollar call out has been made by the United Nations to feed the 100,000 plus children dying in Nigeria because of civil strife there. Aleppo in Syria is now a city literally dying in front of our eyes each evening on the news. All of this creates oscillating feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and exhaustion. What can I do to help? Watch and pray? As I look into the eyes of my granddaughter and see all the privileges she has in her world, I cry for her sisters in Nigeria and Aleppo. Phone: A MOMENT OF REFLECTION IN ADVENT Third Sunday of Advent The letter of Saint James four little verses packed with meaning. Patient or patience appears four times. Do you think he s trying to tell us something? We live in an instant world. The average You Tube video is four minutes, 20 seconds and that s too long for some viewers. Advent is a time to put the brakes on slow down, breathe. The world will tell us that time is running out buy, buy, buy. Now! The Church tells us that Jesus will come whether the stockings are filled or not. Patience. This week, try to build in some quiet time really. You can do it. Just five minutes a bit longer than a TV commercial or You Tube video. Take the time to remember a loved one in prayer. Now that s a gift for the giver and recipient. Prayerful thankfulness and gratitude should perhaps pervade my thoughts entering the season, but if I walk on the other side of the street, ignoring the man who has collapsed in front of my path, what does that make me? Perhaps Advent is a time that calls forth from me action as well as prayer. Michael Cunningham is Director of Faith Formation for St. Eulalia Parish Photograph by Michael J. Cunningham 2016 Page 5
