1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. There are a few tendencies among Christian people that are difficult to balance. One is that we are always between God and human beings, meaning that our life is one split between the presence of God and other people. Sometimes this can get out of balance. A related concern is that we are also stuck between withdrawal and worldliness. In other words, we can tend either to huddle together and never be a relevant force in the world or we can become so worldly that we lose our identity. In liturgy, we have a concept of anabasis and katabasis; this is that we offer something up to God and that he offers something down to us. It is a lovely concept that in the liturgy there is an interplay between heaven and earth motion. If we lose this concept then one of the two above things may happen to us: worldliness being much too concerned with the world (and relying or even denying God) or isolationism being too little concerned with the world. As Christian people, we need the ebb and flow like a tide constantly leading us into the world from the presence of God and constantly going back again. This is healthy. It is totally right to be concerned with world affairs and to advocate for justice. If we are not, then the good and beautiful light given to us by Christ has no use. The light of his justice and the gift of his mercy are not just nice ideas; they have to remain active and useful to people. We have to remember that Christ came into the world for our good and the good of creation to offer us rest in his presence and expect work in the presence of men and women. Christianity is not Christianity when it loses this balance. So as you advocate, remember whose light and truth we defend and proclaim. Remember that investment in the world is undertaken tethered to the light of Christ. And, conversely, we can do little good in an igloo never venturing into the world. God loves those willing to venture into the world and who return to him for rest. Pastor s Note I ve gotten a good response from the posting of the article regarding the tabernacle. It will remain linked to the parish website under the new references tab. Please consider reading this if you haven t already since it gives instructions for reverence during worship that are large areas of confusion in many parishes. Paragraph 31, again, is vitally important. As for the renovations, the windows at St. Bridget s are proceeding nicely. Thank you for letting me know that one of the recently installed ones wasn t opening. Our contractor has assured us that he will make sure that they open. Some of these were broken well before the restoration. If they can be fixed they will be. I will not allow us to be roasted in there! The response to the renderings for St. Mary s has been very positive from the diocese and from the staff and the restoration committee (which is given updates on all of our capital work). The designer has done an excellent job. Also, Jean Mercandetti is the Chair of this committee. We will meet again after the festival. Finally, we have been awarded grants for the maintenance of both of our beautiful cemeteries from Holy Sepulchre. Thanks to Tony DiPrima for his work in securing these grants! Good things keep happening for us here!! Thanks be to God! Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY July 22, 2018 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 St. Benedict Parish G.I.F.T. Growing in Faith Together Faith Formation Update Thank you to the 174 families that responded to the parish-wide survey on faith formation in the past few weeks. We were happy with the number of responses and received much useful feedback. We are still in the planning phases, but we wanted to provide you with a preliminary update. Our Faith Formation Advisory Committee met last weekend and discussed the results of the survey and other related items. As a team, we determined that next year s faith formation will look different than the past few years. After taking into consideration what families are asking for and looking at sustainable models, the committee has decided to return to offering faith formation at both worship sites. We are pleased to offer faith formation after Masses on Sundays, which was the most popular request according to the data. Sessions would take place after 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. Bridget s and after 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary s. Families are welcome to attend at either location. Three times per month, faith formation will be for school-aged children, and once per month, we will be offering whole community faith formation. Though we will be meeting at both sites, the kick-off will take place at St. Mary s on September 16th, Catechetical Sunday, to be celebrated with St. Mary s School. Faith formation will officially begin the following weekend on Sunday, September 23rd. According to Diocesan policy, faith formation programs must run at least through Pentecost, which in 2019 is Sunday, June 9th. We wanted to provide you with this information for your planning purposes, but please know that we are still planning, and more information will be forthcoming. Thank you for your patience as we continue planning. St. Benedict s Ladder of Humility For the next twelve weeks, we will be publishing one of the steps provided in the book entitled Humility Rules: Saint Benedict s 12-Step Guide to Genuine Self-Esteem, written by J. Augustine Wetta, O.S.B., and published by Ignatius Press, A visual representation of these 12 steps was available at our Seven-Elevenish celebration (see images to the right). Wetta explains: Perfect holiness is the purpose for which we were created, so we can t allow ourselves to be comfortable with the status quo. The minimum is not enough. Does this scare you? It should. Everyone to whom much is given, of him much will be required (Luke 12:48). But it should also thrill you, because it means you are infinitely important and always loved. What s more, you have a whole army of saints at your back. You have volumes and volumes of guidance to draw upon. You have the Sacraments and the Scriptures at your disposal and all the resources of an exceedingly ancient religion. So get to it. You know the steps. Now climb the ladder. ~Conclusion, pg. 172 Fear of God Step 1: Be Afraid FEAR OF GOD Always have the fear of God before your eyes (Psalm 36:21) and avoid all thoughtlessness so that you are constantly mindful of everything God has commanded. Fear of God in Word Give up your own will, and take up the strong and most excellent weapons of obedience to do battle for Christ the Lord, the true King. ~ Prologue Homework: Let someone less competent than you tell you what to do. Fear of God in Thought A monk should constantly keep in mind that all who despise God will burn in Hell for their sins, and that eternal life is prepared for those who fear Him. ~ Chap 7: Humility Homework: Spare the life of a bug. Bonus points if it s a mosquito. Fear of God in Deed Since idleness is the enemy of the soul, the brethren should be employed in manual labor at certain times. At other times, they should read spiritual books. ~ Chap 48: Work and Prayer Homework: Secretly do someone else s chores. Important note: On July 23 rd, 24 th, and 25 th, the parking lot at St. Mary s will be sealed and re-striped. This will be done in phases over those days, but limited parking will be available.

They followed Jesus around like people hurry to see movie stars today. Jesus felt sorry for these people. They were like sheep without a shepherd. He said, "Love God more than anything or anyone. Love your neighbor as yourself." His words were joy to their ears. They followed him because he filled their hearts with hope and peace. Prayer Lord, help me give joy to others by sharing your words.
