2 From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould Chris an Exclusivity and Inclusivity St. Peter is a changed man a er he meets the risen Lord Jesus. He who previously tried to avoid confronta on with Jesus s opponents now boldly proclaims to the same group that they can only be saved through Jesus. St. Peter s message, that Jesus is exclusively the savior of the world, was a hard thing for those fellows to hear, and it is a hard thing to hear now. Exclusion, a er all, is bad; inclusion is good. We are trained, these days, to have an immediate, even visceral reac on to anyone who would try to exclude. We are encouraged to applaud anyone and any policy that includes. But let s take a clear look at exclusion and inclusion. In themselves, and taking away the emo onal reac ons they generate, these are neither good nor bad. They are neutral and ambiguous. We need more informa on before we can legi mately know whether the exclusion or inclusion is good or bad. It is wrong to exclude someone who shouldn t (based on other evidence and grounds) be excluded. It is right to include someone or something who should (based on other evidence and grounds) be included. A convicted felon, s ll serving his sentence, is rightly included among the prisoners of a prison and rightly excluded from any number of other places and posi ons. Every human being, from concep on un l death, is rightly included in the set of beings/persons deserving of basic dignity and rightly excluded from the set of things that we can use for our own ends. What about Chris an exclusivity and inclusivity? In the first reading for this Sunday, we hear St. Peter tell the crowd that there is no salva on through anyone else [other than Jesus], nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved. (Acts 4:12) In other words, everyone who desires to be in heaven a er he/she has died will have to be connected to Jesus, one way or the other. No other religion, other than that of the ancient Israelites, is an authen c and truly revealed religion. And now only the Chris an religion, authen cally and con nuously taught and prac ced in the Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Himself, is, in the most basic sense of the word, true. Chris an exclusivity has to do with the uniqueness of Jesus. The Lord Jesus alone is the savior. That s the kind of claim that makes moderns anxious and upset. But so be it. It isn t actually a mean or demeaning claim. If the Catholic Church were claiming that only those who happen to have had parents who were Catholic could be saved, that would be a bad sort of exclusion. That would amount to an essen ally racist claim that our ancestry determines whether we are worthy of heaven. But Catholicism is not an ethnicity or a na onality. It is a religion founded on convic on and commitment to the Lord Jesus. The Catholic Church, though absolutely commi ed to the exclusion of any supposed savior compe ng with Jesus, is also absolutely open to everyone leaving old lives behind and becoming Catholic disciples of Jesus. There isn t a single person alive now who couldn t, if he/she wanted to, become Catholic and connected to the one, true savior, Jesus. All we have to do is come to believe in Him and then commit ourselves to Him in the Church. Leave the old life behind, be converted, and all of the grace necessary for salva on from sin and death will be available. In that sense, the Catholic Church is at least the equal of the most radically inclusive organiza ons in the world. We Chris ans are exclusively devoted to Jesus and are willing to include in the Church all those who sincerely want to be disciples of the Lord. 2 Fourth Sunday of Easter April 22, 2018

6 Dear St. Bede Parish Family, First, thank you for your prayers and interest in my upcoming Ordination to the Diaconate for the Archdiocese. This coming week, from Wednesday through Sunday, I will be attending my Ordination Retreat at Marytown in Libertyville. My wife, Gina will join me on Friday, for the final days of the retreat. So, if you miss her music next weekend, it s my fault. At the end of the retreat, I will be asked to take an Oath of Fidelity in word and action for the Catholic Church, make a public Profession of Faith in all the Church holds true, and sign a proclamation of Freedom to Receive Sacred Ordination as part of my last steps of preparation. Following these final commitments, I will receive my official Call to Orders from Cardinal Cupich for Ordination to the Order of Deacon on the 12 th of May 2018, at Holy Name Cathedral. I humbly ask for your continued prayers for Gina and me, as we get closer to Ordination day. I hope to celebrate this seemingly long journey for me at a Mass of Thanksgiving on May 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM, here at St. Bede, when my family from Pittsburgh and beyond share this first celebration of being a deacon. Thank you for your considera on. LAY DOWN MY LIFE In the Old Testament, God is described many mes as the shepherd of the people of Israel. So when Jesus claims this image of God to describe himself, it is startling even to his disciples. In today's Gospel, he takes the image one step beyond the Old Testament: as the Good Shepherd, he is to "lay down his life." This phrase is stated, with slight varia on, five mes in today's short passage. Jesus is describing the meaning of his life and of his death. With firm roots in the story of Israel and their God, Jesus is now star ng a new chapter. He is helping his disciples make sense of his death on the cross, and to describe how to follow this par cular shepherd. When Jesus lays down his life, he is revealing the infinite love that he and the Father have for the flock. To follow Jesus, to be a part of Jesus' flock, means par cipa ng in that same sacrificial love. ONE FLOCK Jesus adds another feature to the shepherd imagery, which was also disturbing to his disciples. He refers to "other sheep which do not belong to this fold," who will become part of the same flock. This likely refers to the Gen les, to all peoples beyond Israel. The Shepherd extends his flock, but emphasizes that there is s ll only one flock. Jesus spoke forcefully and frequently, especially in the Gospel of John, of the importance of unity among those who follow him. We who follow Jesus are expected to embrace the "other sheep," to respect and celebrate differences among Chris ans. We are expected to learn from one another. All those things that seem to divide Jesus' followers in culture, ethnicity, or history of conflict fade in comparison with the deeper unity of the one flock under one Shepherd. Living in unity is essen al for us to be faithful and credible witnesses of Christ to the world. Yet it s no exaggera on to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world s crops and livestock. This week s scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday s reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salva on comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John s le er we hear that we have become God s beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God s beloved flock?
