6 See Saw? Every manual saw requires a push and a pull. Churches are a lot like that. A healthy, growing church does things to pull people into the church to experience the Gospel and does things that send people into its community with the Gospel. Some call this attractional church and missional church. A growing, healthy church does both. So, Dewayne and Hal combine on this article to help your church think about its push and pull. Getting Your Community into Your Church Hal Bilbo Are there things a church can do to increase the chances that a family from your community will visit your church? Yes! Are there things your church might do (or left undone) to reduce the chances that families in your community will not visit your church? Most certainly! It happens every week. You can improve your church s outreach with a few of the many factors (for a more complete assessment, contact me for a walkthrough consultation). May I ask you a few questions? 1. How is the community invited? Do members regularly make personal or FaceBook invites? Does your church invite with advertisements (signs, radio, internet )? Does your church offer events that welcome and register unchurched community members? 2. What meets the eye? Is your church well maintained? Are parking and entry points well-marked? 3. What is your welcome design? Are people greeted and made to feel as valued guests before entering the facility and again once inside before they reach the pews? What does your welcome area say to those without a church background? Does the church have a plan to help guests to connect to membership and ministry? Does your church service consider the needs or interests of the mildly curious? Getting Your Church into Your Community Dewayne Houser Adopt a community initiative For local churches, outreach often consists of a one-time event on the church campus. While this strategy has produced fruit and can be effective, it is not the only way to create a gospel. A consistent presence in that community results in a long-lasting impact. The idea is you will be able to build better relationships in which to have gospel conversations the more you are in a community. So, how does this work and where do I even start? A way to make this work in your church is through small groups identifying and adopting different communities in your area. A small group or Sunday school class could choose a local neighborhood or an apartment complex they want to reach out to and seek to see people saved in. After they choose the location, they should seek to be proactive in this community to be a gospel presence. The group can ask their church to help with big events such as cook outs, local VBS, sports clubs, etc. in order to meet people. Alongside big events, the group should be praying for the community at their doorstep and walking through the community. The big events will be more successful if you are a continued presence in the community. It is important for people in the group to be faithful to go and walk around the area regularly in order to build relationships. The idea is that each small group is committing to a community while prayerfully and proactively sharing Jesus. The group should seek to have gospel conversations and even begin Bible studies with people in their homes (training can be given to help people learn how to do this). Group members should communicate with each other regularly to make sure they have a plan and also to encourage one another. We understand that we are all to be a part of the great commission, but can be intimidated by this task alone and unsure how to accomplish it. This idea helps people come together as a church body to accomplish the great commission together and helps give direction to people on where to start. I would be happy to personally assist your church with identifying neighborhoods and training your community outreach teams.
7 Letter from Pastor Preston Young of Sweet Home Baptist Church website: sweethomebc.com Dear Pastors and Churches of Stanly County, We all know of the wickedness of our day. Evil is justified, and good is condemned. We have got to make a difference. The apathy of pastors and churches must come to an end. The world does not know it needs us, but we know that we have the answer to their problem. We cannot shove it down their throat, but we certainly need to make a greater effort to present it appropriately. To get this message out a rally was held in Columbia, South Carolina on August 29 th of this year with over 10,000 in attendance. The Lord was lifted up and a stand was taken that We Stand With God. Churches have been demonized if they try to make a difference, but with the church being silent with little influence for many years now we see the negative difference that has been made. There is a We Stand With God Rally to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina on October 17 th at 1pm. We are trying our best to make sure that Stanly County has a good representation in Raleigh. There will be a pastor s meeting held at Sweet Home Baptist Church September 24 th at 7pm to get pastors informed and involved. There will be a Stanly County We Stand With God Rally held October 9 th at 7pm: Location to be determined by pastors and support. We need to show our leaders nationally and locally that we will stand with those that follow righteousness and stand against those that will not stand with righteousness. This is not the church getting involved in politics, but the citizens being encouraged to not be ashamed of their commitment and responsibility before the God of Heaven. We have forgotten that congregations, pastors, and civil servants are citizens that have a significant voice. We have been lied to saying that it is not proper to try to change things according to our beliefs. Then whose beliefs are we going to follow? Your beliefs are important to the survival of our society and nation. Express them and stand on them. Please mark the schedule and attend: 1. Pastor s meeting at Sweet Home Baptist Church September 24 th at 7pm 2. Stanly County Rally (location to be determined) October 9 th at 7pm 3. We Stand With God Rally in Raleigh October 17 th at 1pm Check out the following links: Westandwithgod.org Facebook.com/profamilyrally Sweethomebc.com Twitter@profamilyrally Use Hashtag #westandwithgod Please contact us to show your support and interest in these events. Our country, state, county, city, and community need you to make a difference whether it is appreciated or not. We need your involvement and participation. Psalms 119:126 It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
