2 Dear Friends, I would like to update you on our facilities. Ministry Center progress is on schedule with all of the walls now moved per plan and the subfloor repaired as necessary. Most of the earthquake upgrades have been completed this week and the insulation under the first floor is in-place. Window openings have been enlarged, reframed and the new windows have been ordered. Plumbing installation for the first and second floor restrooms and the staff break room and fire protection system will begin soon as well as work on the Heating and Air Conditioning System. Our holey sewer system serving the gym was repaired just prior to Holy Week. Three hundred feet of the 60 year old 4 inch line was replaced by pulling a new 6 inch line through the opening in the soil where the old line was, bursting and pushing that old line aside. Short connections from the new sewer line to sources at the outside wall of the gym including the kitchen waste line and the waste lines from the men s and women s restrooms were also replaced. (Cost $46,000). The county required our contractor to check all the other lines on the church complex and we found that the line from the church also needs to be replaced as well as the line that serves the school. That project will be delayed until school is out and funding is in-place. We are currently looking at options for replacing the gym floor and probably the paneling on the gym walls, hopefully this summer while school is out. We are also doing a survey of the users of the kitchen in the gym to determine the best approach to upgrading that facility. Discussions are ongoing with an architectural firm to upgrade the restrooms, entrance and the kitchen once that kitchen survey is complete. The parish is also in discussion with a group that would design, finance, install and maintain and lease back a solar system that would reduce our cost for electricity for the next 20 to 25 years. If this project were to go ahead it will probably mean we will have to replace the roof on one or two buildings 2 to 3 years earlier than currently planned. As of now we have sold 315 bricks for the Ministry Center. We would need to sell 500 bricks minimum to order the first consignment. Please do consider buying one or two or more bricks, as that would help us in renovating our Gym- Kitchen facilities. Thank you to all who have already purchased the bricks. Ministry of Consolation & Funeral Assistance: Planning the Funeral Mass for your loved one can be overwhelming. The experience of the death of a loved one is a time of confusion, pain, and anxiety. The mission of the Ministry of Consolation is to console and comfort the family with support, to provide guidance and assistance during the funeral liturgy at CTK. Ministry would involve welcoming the grieving family and their visitors, distribution of funeral programs, seating the people in the Church and much more. If you would love to be part of this ministry, please give your name to Sr. Dominic and I would like to schedule a training program on 25 April 2018 at 10:00am. Winter Nights: Winter Nights are on and we are so blessed to assist these wonderful people with accommodation, food, tutoring and more than anything else respect and love. I am grateful to so many of you for your support. I thought I would share an interview that Pope Francis gave before Lent People who worry about how the money they give to the poor or homeless might be spent should ask themselves what guilty pleasures they are secretly spending money on, Pope Francis said. "There are many excuses" to justify why one does not lend a hand when asked by a person begging on the street, he said. Some may think, I give money and he just spends it on a glass of wine! Francis said. But, he joked, a glass of wine is his only happiness in life! Giving something to someone in need "is always right," the pope said, adding that it should be done with respect and compassion because "tossing money and not looking in [their] eyes is not a Christian" way of behaving, he said. Third Sunday of Easter April 15, 2018 First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, Chapter three of the Acts of the Apostles describes how Peter and John healed a lame man who sat begging each day at the gate of the temple. The people were astonished at this miracle. Peter used the opportunity to give a sermon encouraging the people to believe in Jesus. We hear a portion of that sermon in today s passage. Second Reading: 1 John 2:1-5 During this Easter season, we are reading from the first letter of John. It was written for the community from which the fourth Gospel emerged. At the time, this community was seriously divided. Some members believed that as long as you had faith in Jesus, it didn t matter what you did in daily life. Today s passage refutes that opinion. Catholic Advocacy Day is an annual event organized by the CA Catholic Conference to provide Catholic citizens an opportunity to visit the Capitol offices of their elected legislators and influence them on pending bills of concern to the Catholic Church. This year s Advocacy Day is Tuesday, April 24, in Sacramento. Have you never visited the offices of a legislator? No worries. Not only do they want to hear form you, but the staff of the CA Catholic Conference devotes the morning half of Advocacy Day to debriefing participants on the issues and coaching them on how to be effective advocates. In the afternoon, walk over to the Capitol building in small groups to visit the legislators.
