It is a fascinating story of adventure, rebellion, tragedy, and triumph. A story 2,000 years in the making, one word best describes Catholic history: Epic. Epic: A Journey through Church History is a captivating and fast-paced look at the story of the Catholic Church. Beginning with the lives of the apostles all the way up to the present day, Epic takes the immense history of the Church and simplifies it into twelve, color-coded time periods. In the course of twenty weeks, participants learn about the major people, places, and events that comprise the captivating story of Christianity. This study provides participants with an understanding of Church history that enables them to have a greater sense of meaning and identity as Catholics. To reserve your spot, go to and choose which session you would like to join, Thursday morning or Thursday evening. Morning sessions will be in Croghan Hall at 10a and evening sessions will be in the Middle School Building at 7p. 6 Happenings & Needs As we re reminded every Advent, our Catholic Christmas traditions are somewhat at odds with the secular holiday season, which starts before Thanksgiving and goes on until the last college bowl game. But even though we Catholics wait a bit to get started, we have a similarly long season of celebration, of which the 12 days, made famous by a certain 12-verse carol, are but a piece. The 12 days themselves are the time between the two major Christmas feasts: the Nativity of the Lord on December 25 and Epiphany on January 6. Within them are important feast days in honor of Stephen, the first martyr (December 26); John the evangelist (December 27); and the Holy Innocents, the infants slain by King Herod (December 28, Matt. 2:16 18). These are known as the comites Christi, companions of Christ, because their lives gave unique witness to Jesus through martyrdom (Stephen and the Innocents) and the written word (John). Other Christmas feasts include the Holy Family (Sunday after Christmas) and Mary, Mother of God (January 1). The liturgical season of Christmas ends with the feast of the Lord s Baptism (Sunday after Epiphany). *adapted from December 2005 issue of U.S. Catholic Join us for the Blessing of Wine on Wednesday, 27 December at 9a Mass. Leave your wine behind the communion rail for a blessing. Wine is traditionally blessed on St. John's Day in remembrance of the legend that St. John safely drank poisoned wine offered to him by his enemy after blessing it. Join us for the Blessing of Children on Thursday, 28 December at 9a Mass. Children will come up to the communion rail for a blessing. Our Christmas joy is tempered today by sadness. But the Church looks to the glory of the children, of these innocent victims of Herod, whom she shows us in heaven following the Lamb wherever He goes. Dear Prince of Peace Family, It has been an honor to become a member of the parish family at Prince of Peace Catholic Church and serve as Interim Principal of the parish's incredible and nationally acclaimed school. Worshiping alongside you and serving the families and students of our parish school with the support of Father Smith and our devoted teachers and staff over the last 7 months has infused me with great hope, new friendships and opportunities to grow. 7 Happenings & Needs During the month of January, we will have our annual Diaper Drive benefiting Birthright of Greenville. When a baby is born, every Birthright mother is given a "Baby Bundle" with newborn diapers, baby lotions, baby wash, and wipes. As you can imagine, they go through these items fairly quickly! Leave donations in the Narthex and CLEARLY MARK IT IS FOR BIRTHRIGHT. This is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to participate in a pro-life activity to mark the anniversary of Roe vs Wade and the annual March for Life in DC. Our wildly successful Vacation Bible School, Totus Tuus, will be returning again this Summer! Mark your calendars now for all entering 1st- 12th graders (evening program for 7-12th graders). We have 180 slots for our elementary program. Sign up begins on 4 February 2018, first come first serve, during Super Sign Up Sunday in the PAC! The Totus Tuus Potluck is scheduled for 25 July All parishioners are welcome to enjoy an evening of fellowship, even if you do not have children participating in the program. Questions? Lord, our God, we praise You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for He is Emmanuel, the Hope of all people. He is the Wisdom that teaches and guides us. He is the Savior of us all. O Lord, let your blessings come upon us as we light all candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ s promise of salvation. May He come quickly and not delay. Amen. On Saturday, 6 January 2018, a pro-life rally will be held in Columbia, SC. The event begins at 11a at the USC Russell House (Greene Street) with the Knights of Columbus leading the march. The rally begins at the State House (Gervais Street side) at 12n. The 8th annual Men s Conference, Transformed by Christ, is Saturday, 24 February 2018 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville, NC.
