2 MY DEAR FRIENDS, MAY 15, 2016 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL! Today, Pentecost Sunday, is the birthday of the Catholic Church, founded by Christ; and WE ARE THE CHURCH! On the day of Pentecost, the HOLY SPIRIT, the third person of the Blessed Trinity, descended over the apostles, the pious women, and a great number of disciples gathered in prayer around Mary, Jesus mother. Since then, this SPIRIT OF LOVE OF GOD, for the last 2,000 years (and until the second coming of Jesus), has guided our Catholic Church, helping us Catholics to be faithful to Jesus universal teachings, committed to love one another, even if we have broken each other s hearts, ready to accept, serve and live in harmony with the ugly, the unlovable, the poor, the oppressed society s rejects, the hungry, victims of AIDS, and terrorists. This Holy Spirit, present in us since our baptism and, in a very special way, in our Confirmation, leads us to love Jesus more and more, so to become one with Him every Sunday in Holy Communion, until we will be one with God in Paradise. This Holy Spirit gives us many gifts; among them is the confidence and unshakable trust in God that will make us get over fear and anxieties: There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love. (1 Jn 4:18). Let us always pray: Come Holy Spirit, and enkindle in us the fire of your love! Once again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL!! WITH PENTECOST, our Catholic calendar ends the Easter Season (white vestments) and enters the socalled Ordinary Time, when the priests wear the green vestments. The Easter Candle so visible since that glorious Easter night when we greeted the risen Lord. And in the Baptismal Rite, the candles of the newly baptized are lit from the Easter Candle, as a sign of our future birth in paradise. By the way, did you know that the ancient Christians never used to say: Today is the anniversary of the death of this Saint. They instead always said: Today we celebrate the Birthday of the Saint, referring to the beginning or birth of our eternal life. ON A RELATED TOPIC, many times non-catholics ask: Why do Catholics have to go to confession? The answer is given in today s Gospel, when Jesus gave the most awesome power of forgiving sins, and of reconciling God and us, to the Apostles: If you forgive people s sins, they are forgiven them; if you hold them bound, they are held bound (Jn 20:23). It is mind boggling to me why Jesus gave sinners the power to forgive the sins of other sinners. Maybe God thought that being sinners ourselves, we priests will be much more merciful and forgiving of them I hope we priests will always be good mirrors of God s compassionate love. THANKS TO YOU, MY DEAR PARISHIONERS, the new Zazarino Center is being built and should be opened on PENTECOST SUNDAY time with the opening of the new school year Thank you! And thank God for sending us generous benefactors like you. There is NOW a need to find some naming benefactors for the 15 foot Celtic Cross, about $30K, and the 6 foot statue of Mary, with Jesus or children at her side, about $20K. These two items will grace the entrance of the Center. As pointed out a year ago, we are still searching for a replacement fountain in our Courtyard, the original one is too deeply corroded to function much further; we do not yet have a model chosen for replacement keep tuned-in for our findings! CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ST. MARTHA RELI- GIOUS EDUCATION CHILDREN who received First Holy Communion on May 7, and St. Martha School on May 14. Many thanks to Patty Sileo and Maryann White and her dedicated assistants for all their hard work. God bless them all. All winning artwork will be featured on the children s website ( as E-greetings during Advent Congratulations to Lucia, and to her art teacher, Mary Jo Salomone. ON MOTHER S DAY, I asked the mothers present in Church if their husbands brought them a Mother s Day breakfast in bed Not one woman raised her hand! Now, a kind lady sent me a note: Breakfast in bed is overrated Oh well! (She didn t get her breakfast either). Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry; Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin; Brs. Bill, Tom, Paul & Lawrence and Srs. Cathy & Marianne Year of Mercy: December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016 "When someone asks, How does one become a good Christian? the answer is simple: do what Jesus says in His discourse on the Beatitudes. The Lord knows sin and grace, and He knows the paths that lead to sin and to grace. Blessed are the merciful, for they will find mercy...it s always important to think that we are all an army of forgiven! All of us have been forgiven! And this is why he who takes this path of forgiveness is blessed. - Pope Francis SYMBOLON PART II DISCUSSION GROUP SYMBOLON is a video series developed by the Augustine Institute that explains the core teaching of the Roman Catholic Faith. 4 St. Martha Roman Catholic Church On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave voice to the disciples. The apostles were afraid; so are we. But the same Spirit is with us, too. Ask Him for the courage to speak out on the fundamental right to life, at all stages and all ages. Pray that He gives us the words that lead others also to respect life. Let us be heard beyond the pews, during the week. Let us be heard outside the Upper Room. THE ARIMATHEANS OF ST. To access the guide, available in English and Spanish, please visit election-activities-and-guidelines OUR BIRTHDAY GIFTS Today is Pentecost Sunday, popularly known as the birthday of our Catholic Church. It is 50 days after Easter, 50 days after the Resurrection of Christ. It is the day when Jesus sent His Apostles forth to forgive others and to proclaim the Good News. In his first Pentecost homily, Pope Francis declared: The Holy Spirit transforms and renews us, creates harmony and unity, and gives us courage and joy for the mission. In that one sentence, Pope Francis sums up the elation and strength we should experience on this Holy Day, which commemorates the Holy Spirit descending upon the Apostles and about 120 other followers of Christ, including our Blessed Mother Mary. While it marked the completion of Christ s mission on earth, that mission continues with us. We, too, have received the power of the Holy Spirit through Baptism, the Eucharist and Confirmation. It is the Holy Spirit that allows us to be the Lord s disciples, actively working in today s Church and in the rest of society. We must accept and recognize this fact. St. Luke describes the extraordinary manifestation of the Holy Spirit: This divine gift is light and power, light to proclaim the Gospel truth and power to infuse each of us with the courage of witnessing the faith. Living out this call is the essence of stewardship. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
