2 JUNE 24, 2018 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today, we celebrate the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist, the last prophet of the Old Testament. According to the Gospel of Luke (1:36), John was a cousin of Jesus and was conceived six months before Jesus, and as early as the end of the Roman persecution, John s birth was celebrated in all Christendom. Called from birth by the Lord (1, PS), John matured in the Spirit and heralded the advent of the Messiah. This feast, dating from the 4th c. in both East and West, came to be celebrated, in accord with Lk 1:36, six months before the Lord s birth; quoting Jn 3:30, Augustine found this date (near the summer solstice) appropriate for, after the birth of John, daylight begins to grow shorter, whereas after Jesus birth, it begins to increase. The Gospel recalls John s miraculous birth, with the opening of Zechariah s mouth to announce the name of the new born. As the parallel passage of the gospel says, there is no one greater than John...and in Jesus own words. But, then again, the smallest disciple of Jesus is greater than John! Just in receiving Holy Communion, we identify and unite ourselves with Jesus - body, soul and divinity! No one could be closer than us with Jesus! Not even the Baptist! As I begin my 28 th year as Pastor of St. Martha, I want to thank all of you who have helped me so much by your examples of faith, loyalty, generosity and commitment, and who have thereby enabled me to feel that together we will achieve a good strong parish and school! Thank you! Thank you. Friday, June 29, we, the followers of Jesus, recall the two great apostles that He left (Peter), or sent (Paul after his conversion) to his budding church. It is also the day when we Catholics pray for the Pope, and reaffirm our unshakable belief in the dogma of the inerrancy of the Pope. It does seem ironic that a Jewish fisherman, and a rabbi, who once persecuted the Christians, would be honored two thousand years later as the champions of the Church of Christ. Papal infallibility, or inerrancy, is a dogma rooted in the Bible. The papacy grew out of the mission of Peter (born Simon by Jonah), an uneducated common fisherman, from the village of Capernaum, who nonetheless became the leading disciple of Jesus, who changed his name from Simon to Cephas, which more accurately would sound like Rocky in our colloquial English. In Matthew s Gospel (16:18-19), Jesus gives Peter the keys of authority to admit or exclude, and promised that Peter s primacy among the apostles will survive Peter s death. From this awesome power, given inexplicably to Peter, one can infer that this fisherman was an exceedingly smart genius far from it! Many unflattering remembrances about Peter are immortalized in the Gospel! The most famous is the painful and shameful denial of Jesus (Mk 16:66-72) in the courtyard. Even outside the Bible, one very ancient Roman tradition, immortalized in the Quo Vadis chapel on the Appian Way, makes use of the fumbling fisherman s shoes! The most obvious question that comes to mind is How could Jesus make such a stupid choice? My answer is based on the last chapter of John s Gospel (21:15-19) when Peter thrice reaffirmed his undying love for Jesus because, as Jesus himself said (Lk 7:47): So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love, but the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little. The great lesson from Peter s choice by Jesus is this: we are judged by God not only on our successes or talents, but primarily by our love of God, of neighbors, of ourselves. As the song says: And They ll Know We are Christians by Our Love. As Paul remarked (1 Cor:13), everything will pass away - riches, health, possessions, hope and knowledge - because in Paradise we will find God alone, and God is Love! (1 Jn 4:8). Let us pray then for our Holy Father, that the Lord will keep him holy, healthy and joyful. Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday, when the members of Caritas (all volunteers) seek your donations at the doors of the church to help them with money to continue to assist the needy of our area. Last month, you dear parishioners, donated $4,138 at the church doors. Please be generous. Help to make up for all our parishioners who are on vacation. God will reward you. What does it mean to do onto others as you want them to do to you? Why does God wash away our sins? What does God eat? How old do you have to be to become a priest? Why is the school named after St. Martha? Why do children die sometimes?

3 THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY Catholic Life Insurance is now accepting applications for two scholarships worth $2,000 each through the Rev. Msgr. Larry J. Droll Scholarship Fund. The scholarship assists Catholic laymen and women pursuing graduate degrees that will help them qualify for professional positions in Parish and Diocesan Ministry. Scholarships will be awarded to practicing Roman Catholics who have already attained a Bachelor's degree and are now enrolled in Catholic graduate schools of Theology or Religious studies. MY CHOICE PREGNANCY CENTER Volunteers Needed Supporting those who need our help is easier than you think. We need your help at the center with the following: *Counseling Pregnant & Parenting Women *Working in the thrift store Our thrift store also needs donations. Many items are given to Moms, the rest is sold to benefit the moms and babies in our area. The following are needed most: small kitchen appliances, towels, bedding, household items like pots and pans and dishes, furniture (we can't take TV s, computers, or appliances). Donations can be dropped off at My Choice Pregnancy Center s Angels Attic located at 5277 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, just south of University Parkway. THE OFFICE OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY is looking for married couples who are excited about the Catholic Faith and willing to teach a one-day workshop up to three times per year. Training will be provided on the basics of Theology of the Body and the teachings of the Catholic Church on Marriage. A stipend is paid to those couples who assist with this important service. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a storm less eternity awaits us.
