Please silence all mobile phones Please stand as the Chapel lights dim The choir sings from the antechapel Order of Service INTROIT I look from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth. Go ye out to meet him and say: Tell us, art thou he that should come to reign over thy people Isarael? High and low, rich and poor, one with another, Go ye out to meet him and say: Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like sheep, Tell us, art thou he that should come? Stir up thy strength, O Lord, and come to reign over thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Please remain standing I look from afar. Words: translated from the First Responsory of Advent Sunday in the Office of Matins Music: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina THE BIDDING PRAYER The Rev'd Fr Paul Thomas 3
OPENING HYMN Solo Choir All Once in royal David s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy. And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly Maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he. And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that Child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around. 4 Words: C.F. Alexander ( ) Music: H.J. Gauntlett ( )
Please be seated THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 3:8 15 The Story of the Fall read by Molly Jaques (Ap) The choir sings E'EN SO LORD JESUS, QUICKLY COME Paul Manz ( ) Peace be to you and grace from him Who freed us from our sins, Who loved us all and shed his blood That we might saved be. Sing holy, holy to our Lord, The Lord, Almighty God, Who was and is and is to come; Sing holy, holy, Lord! Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, Rejoice on earth, ye saints below, For Christ is coming, is coming soon, For Christ is coming soon! E'en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, And night shall be no more; They need no light nor lamp nor sun, For Christ will be their All! THE SECOND LESSON Genesis 22:15 18 God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed read by Dan Harding (Bn) 5
Please stand HYMN God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour Was born on Christmas day, To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy! From God our Heavenly Father A blessèd angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy! The shepherds at those tidings Rejoicèd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding, In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway This blessèd Babe to find. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy! But when to Bethlehem they came, Whereat this Infant lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary, kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy! 6
Please be seated The choir sings Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth deface. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy! Words: Traditional Music: English traditional arr. David Willcocks (b.1919) THE THIRD LESSON Isaiah 9:2,6,7 The prophet Isaiah foretells the coming of the Saviour read by Scarlett Zein (O) THERE SHALL A STAR Felix Mendelssohn ( ) There shall a Star from Jacob come forth, And a Sceptre from Israel rise up, And dash in pieces princes and nations. How brightly beams the morning star! With sudden radiance from afar, With light and comfort glowing! Thy Word, O Lord, inly feeds us, Rightly leads us, life bestowing. Praise, O praise such love o erflowing! THE FOURTH LESSON Isaiah 11:1 9 The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown read by Fin Rossiter (Hg) 7
Please stand HYMN Long ago, prophets knew Christ would come, born a Jew, Come to make all things new; Bear His People's burden, Freely love and pardon. Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring! Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing! When He comes, when He comes, Who will make Him welcome? God in time, God in man, This is God's timeless plan: He will come, as a man, Born Himself of woman, God divinely human. Mary, hail! Though afraid, She believed, she obeyed. In her womb, God is laid: Till the time expected Nurtured and protected. Journey ends! Where afar Bethlehem shines, like a star, Stable door stands ajar. Unborn Son of Mary, Saviour, do not tarry! Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring! Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing! Jesus comes! Jesus comes! We will make Him welcome! Words: F. Pratt Green ( ) Music: Piae Cantiones (1582) arr. Gustav Holst ( ) 8
Please be seated The choir sings THE FIFTH LESSON St Luke 1:26 38 The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary read by Rosie Freeman (A) A MAIDEN MOST GENTLE Andrew Carter (b.1939) A maiden most gentle and tender we sing Of Mary the mother of Jesus our King Ave, Ave, Ave Maria. How blest is the birth of her heavenly child Who came to redeem us in Mary so mild Ave, Ave, Ave Maria. The archangel Gabriel foretold by his call The Lord of creation and Saviour of all Ave, Ave, Ave Maria. Three kings came to worship with gifts rich and rare And marveled in awe at the babe in her care Ave, Ave, Ave Maria. Rejoice and be glad at this Christmas we pray Sing praise to the Savior sing end-lessly Ave, Ave, Ave Maria. Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria. 9
THE SIXTH LESSON St Luke 2:1 7 St Luke tells of the birth of Jesus read by Mr James Dahl, Deputy Head (Pastoral & Wellbeing), Second Master Elect The choir sings I WONDER AS I WANDER John Rutter (b.1945) I wonder as I wander out under the sky, How Jesus the Savior did come for to die. For poor on'ry people like you and like I... I wonder as I wander out under the sky. When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall, With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from God's heaven a star's light did fall, And the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing, Or all of God's angels in heav'n for to sing, He surely could have it, 'cause he was the King. THE SEVENTH LESSON St Luke 2:8 16 The shepherds go to the manger read by Mr Julian Thomas, Master 10
All stand to sing 11
The choir sings A CHILD IS BORN IN BETHLEHEM Philip Stopford (b.1977) A child is born in Bethlehem, Alleluia. And joy is in Jerusalem, Alleluia. Rejoice, rejoice, sing high, sing low, Alleluia.
