4 th Sunday in Lent A March 26, 2017 Richard Allen Samuel 16:1-13 Epesians 5:8-14 John 9: st Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church St. John s Episcopal Church, Centreville VA Adult Lectionary Forum 2017
Richard Allen ( ) was a minister, educator, writer, who in 1816 founded the African Methodist Episcopal (AME), the first independent black denomination in the United States. Born a slave on February 14, 1760, in Germantown, PA, in 1777, Richard Allen bought his freedom and that of his brother. He studied to become a minister, opened his first church in Philadelphia (1789), & was elected the first bishop of the AME Church. Originally a Methodist preacher, he wanted to establish a black congregation independent of white control. The resulting AME church, therefore, became the first and oldest denomination among independent African-American churches. In 1786, Allen became a preacher at St. George's Methodist Church in Philadelphia, but was restricted to early morning services. As he attracted more black congregants, the church vestry voted to build a segregated gallery for the use of blacks. Allen and Absalom Jones, also a Methodist preacher, resented the white congregants' forcing them to a segregated section for worship and prayer. They decided to leave St. George's to create independent worship for African Americans. This brought some opposition from the white church and the more established blacks of the community. In 1787 Allen and Jones led the black members out of St. George's Methodist Church. They formed the Free African Society (FAS), a non-denominational mutual aid society, which assisted fugitive slaves and new migrants to the city. Over time, most of the FAS members left with Absalom Jones to form a new congregation, which opened its doors as an Episcopal parish on July 17, 1794 as the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. Allen and others wanted to continue in the Methodist practice. Allen called their congregation the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). Using a converted blacksmith shop which they moved to the site on Sixth Street, they opened the doors of Bethel AME Church on July 29, 1794, and were affiliated with the larger Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1799, Allen became the first black Methodist minister, ordained by Bishop Francis Asbury, in recognition of his leadership and preaching. In 1816 Allen united four African-American congregations of the Methodist Church. Together they founded the independent denomination of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), the first fully independent black denomination in the United States. On April 10, 1816, Allen was elected its first bishop. Sketch: BISHOP RICHARD ALLEN Richard Allen ( ) Founder & 1 st Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church
Collect for 4 th Sunday in Lent A Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, & we in him; who lives & reigns with you & the Holy Spirit, one God, now & forever. Amen. Prayer for 4 th Sunday in Lent A [Bishop Richard Allen] Loving God, who makes us all your children by adoption in Jesus Christ: May we, following the example of your servant Richard Allen, proclaim liberty to all who are enslaved and captive in this world; through Jesus Christ, Savior of all, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. St. John s Episcopal Church, Centreville VA -- Adult Lectionary Forum 2017
The LORD said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not consider his appearance or his height, for the LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. 10 Jesse had 7 sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen these. 11 So he asked Jesse, Are these all the sons you have? There is still the youngest, Jesse answered, He is tending the sheep Then the LORD said, Rise & anoint him; this is the one. 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil & anointed him in his brothers presence; so from that day the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. 4 th Lent A: Runt of the Litter? [1 Samuel 16:1-13] Timeline: c BC God surprises Samuel by sending him to anoint the youngest son of a large family to be the new king. He protects Samuel in this work despite the prophet s fear King Saul will kill him. Don t Judge Books by Covers Most kings are anointed as they ascend the throne, not years before --David s anointing as Israel s future king, is beset by ambiguity & dread --Samuel is despondent over his failure & conflict with Saul --God suggests a ruse do a job whose real value is a bit unclear Bethlehem s leaders worry when Samuel arrives; we aren t told why The story s climactic line in V 7 is heard only by Samuel What each of Jesse s 7 other sons lack we are never told But Samuel s action changes an ordinary youth s world big time It tickles a hidden ambition that will grow in magnitude throughout his life, and in all history that follows Ancient Israel s self-understanding, & that of both Judaism & Christianity, flow from this moment of David s first affirmation from the outside world. 5 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. 4 th Lent A: Yin &Yang! [Ephesians 5:8-14] c. 62 or AD Like many authors in the 1st-century world, Paul trades in opposites: Sin and Righteousness, Death and Life, Light and Darkness. Note the Contrasts! Believers in Christ ~ children of light & God s love: pursue a life in the light: --Goodness, righteousness, truth --Aided by Spirit, Scriptures, & Church Those who don t are doomed to damnation & God s wrath --Lead unfruitful lives of impurity, greed, foul language, corruption Paul declares everything which has been revealed is now light --Darkness is now light --If we in the light expose deeds of those in darkness, our reproof can result in those people s transformation Paul s citation of a poem [source uncertain] makes it more likely salvation is in fact in view Because Christ s light has come, Ephesians are radically transformed They are now charged with shining this light upon others to transform them Moving into the light brings initial pain to the eyes, and the cultivation of fruit takes effort, but the transition is worth it St. John s Episcopal Church, Centreville VA Adult Lectionary Forum 2017
As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, & put it on the man s eyes. 7 Go, he told him, wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man went & washed, & came home seeing. 35 Jesus heard they had thrown him out, & when he found him, he said, Do you believe in the Son of Man? 36 Who is he, sir? the man asked. Tell me so I may believe in him. 37 Jesus said, You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you. 38 Then the man said, Lord, I believe, & he worshiped him 40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this & asked, What? Are we blind too? 41 Jesus said, If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. 4 th Lent A: Who is Really Blind? [John 9:1-41] c AD Jesus causes a stir by restoring a blind man's sight on the Sabbath. Pharisees & the man's own parents are skeptical & angry. Driven from town, Jesus finds the now-sighted man and makes him a disciple. Enlightening Others! Purpose of signs in John is to teach about Christology --Giving sight to a blind man ~ Jesus is light of the world --Multiplication of loaves in Ch 6 ~ Jesus is bread of life Only way to approach light of God in person of Jesus is to acknowledge our own blindness Approaching Jesus pretending to know (Nicodemus) or to see (Pharisees) = spiritual blindness Ch 9 exemplifies movement from unbelief to belief V 38 displays faith required for salvation Blind man is a foil for blindness of the Pharisees Irony of 4 th Gospel: a blind man sees what religious authorities do not (Vv 39-41) St. John s Episcopal Church, Centreville VA Adult Lectionary Forum 2017
