4 Knightlife Sept./Oct Page 4 Texas Hold em Charity Games in Crisis Larry Foltran passed along the following message from Lisa Barrata at the River Poker House: Hi Everyone, I wanted to contact everyone to provide an update of the current state of affairs. The Michigan Gaming Control Board is attempting to shut all charity poker locations down. They are attempting to introduce new rules that appear like they are keeping millionaire parties but we will be forced to close. For example, they want to limit us to one charity per day and only 30 days of operation per year. It s really hard to believe. We are continuing the lawsuit and going to try to get the bill passed that Representative Farrington has sponsored. It s not over but we have a very tough road ahead of us. I will be contacting you frequently and requesting your assistance in different ways. To start, I need you get all of your members to contact their representatives, senators and Governor Snyder. Contact them via phone, or letter and express how important this fundraising is to your causes. Please contact me if your charity assists handicapped or blind children or battered women. Thank you so much for your anticipated cooperation. Lisa Note: The next Texas Hold em will be Nov. 2-5 at the River. Please sign up at the Oct. meeting. Additionally, the following news appeared recently in Crain s Detroit Business: State Rep. Jeff Farrington, R-Utica, last week introduced legislation that would effectively reverse recent changes enacted by the Michigan Gaming Control Board to the way charitable poker games can operate in the state. Among other changes, Farrington's House Bill 4960 seeks to allow the poker rooms where the charity games take place to operate until 2 a.m. and allow five charities to hold an event concurrently at the same location. Farrington said the bill also proposes "common sense" licensing standards, requirements and fees. "Nonprofit organizations can use the money from these charitable gaming events to support many great causes across the state," said Farrington, chairman of the House Tax Policy Committee, in a release. (Continued on page 5)
5 Knightlife Sept./Oct Page 5 Texas Hold em Charity Games in Crisis (Cont.) (Continued from page 4) "However, recent rules enacted by the Michigan Gaming Control Board have put a heavy burden on organizations and charities operating these games and have led to a decrease of over 70 percent in authorized licenses. "Charitable organizations should have rules in place that allow them to participate in charitable gaming without facing unnecessary bureaucratic red tape." Farrington said he has been working with the Michigan Charitable Gaming Association for the past several months on the bill. The association, which represents nearly 400 for-profit charity poker room owners and charities, said in early August that it was seeking a legislative sponsor to introduce changes it's proposing to the Traxler-McCauley-Law-Bowman Bingo Act of 1972, which governs charity poker games, among other things. The changes issued by the gaming control board July 29, many of which were to take effect on Sept. 1, were put on hold in late August after Ingham County Circuit Judge Clinton Canady signed a temporary restraining order against the gaming control board and its executive director, Rick Kalm, to block the set of licensing and regulation updates. (Excerpt from S. Welch, House bill would reverse recent changes to charitable gaming rules, Crain s Detroit Business, September 9, 2013, p. 18) The following URL leads to a petition on Change.Org which supports the effort to keep Texas Hold em under the old rules. 6 SAINT CLEMENT OF ROME Council # South Main Romeo, MI Editor: Mike McKinnon Phone: In Service to One In Service to All Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.
