Thrivent Chapter News The Randolph Co. Thrivent Chapter has a limited amount of funds available. If you would like to sponsor an event to raise money for an approved cause, call Mary Reith ( ). She will mail you a form for you to fill out with the details of your event. It will be brought before the board for approval. The form needs to be filled out and approved before your activity. The Randolph Co. Thrivent Chapter is sponsoring a FOOD CHAL- LENGE!!! Bring your can goods, cereals and other staple items to the collection point at your church. For every donated item, your local food pantry (s) will receive $1 plus the collected food! A maximum of $500 will be given for this cause--for each church taking part in the program. The deadline has been extended to June 30th. Thank you for your support!! May God Bless You!!! Youth Mission Trip Support our youth group on mission! We are asking for support as we travel on June to the Bayou in Charwin, Louisiana. We will be helping Bayou Grace mission work and will be the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program help at their farm involving working on projects for future plantings, Adopt-A-Highway and work with a youth summer camp. We will have a free-will offering, May 31 st & June 1 st and will have Youth Mission offering envelopes in the pew. Any donations above the cost of our trip will go to Bayou Grace. Consider hosting an international student for the school year. You provide the student with love, room and board. The student will provide his/own insurance, tuition, transportation to school and spending money. Host parents can specify the gender of the student they are willing to host and may give input to help select the specific student as well. Summer Volunteers: If you would like to help COS over the summer with on or off campus projects please call. Help is needed with parades, gardening and our rummage sale. COS Rummage Sale: The rummage sale will be held on July in the COS gym. Items can be brought to the school during office hours. Please call the school before dropping off your items Summer Office Hours: Someone will usually be in the office from 9:00-3:00, Monday through Thursday and on Fridays from 9:00 to noon. Peace Meal from Peacemaker Ministries It Takes Two To Tango (And to Grant Forgiveness) When an offense is too serious to overlook and the offender has not yet repented, you may need to approach forgiveness as a two-stage process. The first stage requires having an attitude of forgiveness, and the second, granting forgiveness. Having an attitude of forgiveness is unconditional and is a commitment you make to God (see Mark 11:25; Luke 6:28; Acts 7:60). By his grace, you seek to maintain a loving and merciful attitude toward someone who has offended you. This requires making and living out the first promise of forgiveness, which means you will not dwell on the hurtful incident or seek vengeance or retribution in thought, word, or action. Instead, you pray for the other person and stand ready at any moment to pursue complete reconciliation as soon as he or she repents. This attitude will protect you from bitterness and resentment, even if the other person takes a long time to repent. Granting forgiveness is conditional on the repentance of the offender and takes place between you and that person (Luke 17:34). It is a commitment to make the other three promises of forgiveness to the offender. When there has been a serious offense, it would not be appropriate to make these promises until the offender has repented. Until then, you may need to talk with the offender about his sin or seek the involvement of others to resolve the matter (Matt. 18:16-20). You could not do this if you had already made the last three promises. But once the other person repents, you can make these promises, closing the matter forever, the same way God forgives you. Taken from The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict by Ken Sande, Updated Edition (Grand Rapids, Baker Books, 2003) p. 60. Food for Thought Today's Food for Thought is pretty simple: When it comes to granting forgiveness, don't forget to involve the offender! Many times, forgiveness is described as "letting go" or "getting over it." This is true and absolutely necessary, to the extent that "letting go" is, in essence, a matter of taking your eyes off the offense and the offender and putting them on the cross, where the ultimate act of reconciliation took place. But again, this only gets us to the beginning of the first stage of forgiveness. To be able to make all four promises of forgiveness (i.e., to experience complete reconciliation), however, we must involve the other person. Now ideally, the granting of forgiveness takes place in the context of a confession by a repentant offender. When the offender can't or won't Page -7- Page -8-

5 repent, then it is true that our only choice is to maintain an attitude of forgiveness. But when our offender hasn't had a chance to confess, then we owe it to him (or her) to go to him and give him that chance. As we "gently restore" the offender, and God works in his heart, then we both have opportunity to experience the joy of true and complete reconciliation. Preparing for Worship The Holy Trinity (15 June 014) Genesis 1:1-2:4a; Acts 2:14a, 22-36; Matthew 28:16-20 The Holy Triune God Recreates Us in the Image and Likeness of Christ Jesus The holy Triune God "created the heavens and the earth," and "behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:1, 31). However, after Adam and Eve fell into sin and plunged God's good creation into decay and death, the Son of God would be "delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God" to be "crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men" (Acts 2:23). As Jesus "received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:33), He also raises up all the baptized and pours out the Spirit upon them through the preaching of His Gospel. He sends out His apostles to "make disciples of all nations" by "baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," and "teaching them to observe all that [He has] commanded" (Matt. 28:19-20). Through such baptizing and teaching - Gospel and Sacraments - the holy Triune God recreates us in the image and likeness of His incarnate Son, Jesus the Christ, and behold, it is "very good" (Gen. 1:31). Float Door Offering The Board of Stewardship has authorized a door offering for the July 4th float on June 21st-22nd. Last year the St. Mark's float received first place. This year's winner for the design of the float was Kadence Bockhorn, 4th grade. As a result, she and her class, along with Mr. Luedders, the teacher, will get to participate in the parade. We thank the Evangelism Board for spearheading this special project and look forward to seeing the finished product. Page -13- Page -14-
