1 The Message of 1739 Harrison - Quincy Il, Phone pastorscottmikkelson@gmail.com Cell July 2018 Pastor s Ponderings For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the scriptures... 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 July fourth is Independence Day, and all across America people will celebrate the tremendous freedom we enjoy. We are truly blessed! Those of us who know Jesus Christ as our Savior have another kind of freedom to celebrate. We are free from the bondage of our sin and death. I Corinthians 15:1-4 gives a concise picture of the freedoms we have in Christ. First, Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. He died for one reason: to pay the penalty necessary for our sins. He took our place. Because of His death, we are made free from the death penalty of sin and stand righteous before God. This is our justification. Our Beliefs. We believe in the triune God: Father, Son, & Holy Spirit We believe that the Bible is the divinely-inspired and inerrant Word of God We believe that we are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ We believe that God's grace comes to us through Word and Sacrament We believe in the Lutheran Confessions We believe that all are called to serve God and our neighbors through our God-given gifts, talents, and abilities Second, that He was buried. Romans 6 tells us that through faith we died with Him and were buried with Him and are now dead to the power of sin over us. Sin no longer has dominion over us, so we can choose to live righteous, holy lives. We are free from sin s control over us! This is our sanctification. Third, that He rose again on the third day according to the scriptures. His death alone could not save us; it was the resurrection that showed God s acceptance of Christ s sacrifice, and that gives power unto salvation. In Colossians 3:1 we read that we are risen with Christ. His resurrection guarantees a future in Heaven for us where we will be free from the presence of sin. This is our glorification. Jesus says in John 8:31-32, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Now that s cause for celebration every day! Lord Jesus, may I never forget the great gift of freedom You have given to me as Your disciple. For if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 2 HOPE HAPPENINGS Walk n Word A fellowship opportunity that offers exercise for the body and spirit A ministry to reach the unchurched / those unfamiliar with or uncomfortable in a church worship setting. All are invited to come as you are and enjoy contemporary music and more! July 8th Meet at lower parking lot at the church. We will Walk about 25 minutes in the neighborhood and then have minutes to share the Word. In June during this time, we will watch Not a Fan video and discuss. Please come for this special time whenever you can.. Fridays at 9:00am (not on the 27th) All are welcome to come and bring a friend! August 12th HORIZONS SOUP KITCHEN Hope Serves the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Thursday s from 11am-1:30pm each month. July 12th, 19th and 25th All are invited and encouraged to serve! LET S FILL THE CART!!! 4 Hope Lutheran Council Unapproved Minutes Monday May 14, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by Linda Sachs Present: Linda Sachs, Mark Cassens, Michelle Willner, Doug Tenhouse, Toni Vollbracht, George Black, Ivan Paul, and Pastor Scott Mikkelson. Devotion led by Doug Tenhouse, he shared his faith story. April 9,2018 meeting minutes were approved with pending changes. Pastor Report 4/10-5/14: five (5) general counseling, three (3) pre-marriage counseling, five (5) Sunday Services, affirmation of Baptism practice, one wedding and rehearsal, two (2) community pastor/ Chaplin meetings, two (2) ten-hour overnight volunteer Chaplin shifts, three (3) Faith builders events, various meetings. Requesting vacation days May 31-June 6; Approved by Council. Sunday, June 3rd- Conner Brinson volunteered to preach and lead service. Financial Report: Cash flow for April was pretty event -$213. We had a couple extra payments such as Ursa Retreat House $855 which was our Lenten Offering total. We also advanced $380 to the softball team which will be repaid, at least in part. The Income Statement shows a net gain of $1,754 for the year. The General Fund, which includes our Operating Budget, shows a loss of $3,669 all of which is attributable to our Operating Budget loss of $5,292 YTD. Contributions to the Building Fund and Memorials make our cash flow positive for the year. The Operating Budget had a gain of $669 for March and a loss of $874 in April. Our projected income is pretty much on target. Actual is $36,596 vs Budget $36,400. We have about $5,000 in the Benevolence Budget to distribute. $1,500 was done the first part of May. We had $1,600 cash at Edward Jones that I transferred to First Bankers Trust. We continue to maintain about one month s expense in our checking account. George Black, Treasurer Motion made and approved to accept treasure s report. Ministry Teams Discipleship : Discussed Vacation Bible School; July We need volunteers for VBS and children to attend. Fellowship: Discussed Block Party; July 27. We need volunteers. Planning for block party is in the works. Property Team: Had Air Conditioner serviced, $380. One of the units is leaking, possible replacement in the next year. Checked water heaters. One will need replaced in future. Motion was made and approved to spend up to $500 on Weed and Feed for lawn this year. Old Business: Audio Visual Training to be rescheduled. Doug Tenhouse reviewed Wings Program. New Business: Second Sunday Service- start June 10 at 7pm for the summer months, may change time in fall. Pastor and Mark will lead future discussions on promotional ideas. 5 Hope Lutheran Council Unapproved Minutes, Monday June 11,2018 The meeting was called to order at 7:01 by Linda Sachs Present: Linda Sachs, Mark Cassens, Michelle Willner, Ivan Paul and Pastor Scott Mikkelson Devotion led by Linda Sachs May 14,2018 meeting minutes were approved. Pastor Report 4/10-5/14: four(4) general counseling, three(3) Sunday services,two(2) community pastor/chaplain meetings, one(1) ten-hour overnight Chaplain shift, one week vacation, various meetings. Request Wed (6/13/18) thru (6/16/18) off. Pastor Ron available for pastoral duty during this time. Pastor report and request for vacation approved. Financial Report: Cash flow for the month ( May) was negative $2790. $1500 of that was covered with a transfer from Edward Jones Cash. Some of the items in that outflow were; Benevolence $1000,Disability Ins annual premium $1732,Annual A/C service $394. Credit card purchases included $360 annual fee for Church Trac and $231 for replacement phone for Pastor. Our Operating Budget shows a net outflow of$9872. Income is pretty much on target and expense keeps within budget. Financial report was approved as presented per George Black, Treasurer. Ministry Teams: Discipleship: Garage sale/car wash to support youth for Ursa Camp is June 23 Adult small group session planned for August. Fellowship: Block Party July 27. Ongoing soft ball games this summer Evangelism: VBS July First second Sunday evening worship called 1739 Hope went well. Old Business: A-V training to be rescheduled. New Business: BETHECHURCH: It is noted that people have been touched on the softball team and at 1739Hope Notice of petition for City of Quincy Planning Commission meeting reviewed. Owners of property at 1705 Harrison have requested our permission to allow sale of open liquor and use of gaming machines.. We as a council agree not to support this request but will not seek formal opposition. Written letter of our decision will be sent to city planning office. Motion was made that council president or vice president will be responsible on Sunday for opening church by 8:30 am and locking up on same day when Pastor is not available.. Motion passed.
