2 A letter from our Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, Would you like to see Jesus, to hear and touch Him? The Church Fathers remind us that the signs and wonders, miracles and teachings of Christ have passed over into the seven life-giving sacraments that are celebrated in and by the Church. But many Catholics today seem to have lost the sense of awe and the transformative power of beauty that are in the sacraments. Centuries of rationalization, secularization and desacralization, and the pervasive influence of evangelical Protestant ideas of the relationship between faith, personal spiritual responsibility and the sacraments have ravaged many Catholics approach to the sacraments. I am absolutely convinced that the more we reclaim our true Catholic identity and restore Catholic culture based on the liturgy, prayer, sacraments, evangelization, catechesis and works of mercy, the sacraments will come alive once more. Lent is coming, and I know you are looking into all kinds of ways to grow in your faith. Last year we explored through a religious education series the rites and ceremonies of Holy Week, and my preaching the whole year after centered on the concept of the Paschal Mystery: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ as encountered in the Sacred Liturgy. But the liturgy is more than just Mass; it is the entire sacramental economy of the Church. So, this Lent, I want to focus on the sacraments by offering as your spiritual reading a work of incredible theological, historical and spiritual depth, but which is also very accessible. Monsignor Nicola Bux is one of the world s leading liturgical and sacramental theologians today. His recent book, No Trifling Matter: Taking the Sacraments Seriously Again, will make you rethink each one of the great seven rites in your life. As he writes, the sacraments are not symbolic actions of the Church, but efficacious acts of the presence of Christ who, acting in this way, binds man to himself, and wishes to bind him in order to give him the life of the Spirit and carry him back to the Father from whom he has distanced himself on account of sin. This is the work of Jesus. Now, if you decide to buy this book (and I really recommend it!), then if you choose Amazon, then remember to go through the Amazon Smile portal and make Prince of Peace Catholic Parish or School your partner. We are blessed to have St Benedict s Catholic Store in the area, so please remember to patronize local Catholic business, too! 1 Church 2 Christ the King Adoration Chapel 3 PAC (Parish Activity Center) & PAC Classroom 4 Guadalupe Hall 5 School & School Offices (Lourdes Hall) 6 & 7 Parish House, under the protection of Our Lady of Fatima 8 KofC Building 9 Pope Francis House 10 Walsingham Hall Parking Lots 11, 12, 13 and 14

7 Happenings & Needs Ash Wednesday is 6 march Our schedule is as follows: 7a Distribution of Ashes and Low Mass (English) 8.30a Distribution of Ashes and School Mass 12N Distribution of Ashes and Low Mass (Latin) 7p Distribution of Ashes and High Mass (English) The present laws of the Church regarding fast and abstinence during the Season of Lent are as follows: 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two lesser meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year. 2. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. On days of abstinence, meat should not be eaten at any meal. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics who have completed their 14th year. The obligation to observe, as a whole or substantially, the penitential days specified by the Church is a serious obligation. The Code of Cannon Law states: On these days (of Penance), the faithful are in a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity, to deny themselves, by fulfilling their obligations more faithfully and especially by observing the fast and abstinence. Our Latin Mass community invites everyone to join their First Sunday of the Month Potluck after the EF 12n Mass. Bring a dish to share and enjoy being part of this vibrant group!
