Deacon Bob Shaw, Parish Secretary Michelle Fury, Director of Parish Life Michelle Herrington Finance Manager Rose Strickland Director of Pastoral Care Donna Enderle Directors of Evangelization & Mission Michael Havercamp Tasha Havercamp Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry Luke Ebener Director of Religious Education Jen Brooke Director of Music Dr. Jacob Bancks School Principal Julie Delaney, Parish Prayer Chain Elaine Lewandoski (563) Parish Website A Message from Father Tony Herold Saint Paul the Apostle Parish is quite unique and special. Our uniqueness has little to do with our location, our facilities, or our mission. Other parishes may have a better location or more accommodating facilities. We all share the same mission of proclaiming the gospel. What makes us unique are the people who form this community and share this common responsibility as members of the Body of Christ.. Although, as I mentioned, all Catholic parishes share in the same mission not all have articulated that mission well, focused on that mission with deliberation and intensity, or proclaimed that mission as ardently and clearly as we are striving to do here. We know that our call is to form intentional disciples. not simply in a generic sense by celebrating the outward signs of the Sacraments: pouring water over those to be baptized, gathering for the Eucharist, preparing for First Communion and Confirmation. We specifically want to be very intentional about our discipleship. Can we articulate our own call to follow Jesus? Are we welcoming to those who are not in our circle? Do we have a sense that Jesus is launching us with our specific gifts into the world? We are blessed to have had many young couples and families joining our parish recently because they feel the warmth and welcome of God s love in this place. They have checked out other parishes but believe this is the faith home that God is calling them to join. As we move into the future we are well aware that the physical house, the church building where we worship is in need of repair and renovation. At this time we are called to look carefully at our church building and be responsible for its upkeep. In preparing for this task we are also asking how this space is fostering our mission as intentional disciples. Here in this church we proclaim God s Word and celebrate the love of God through the Sacraments of Christ. Just as many of you must maintain your own homes, so must this community do so with these buildings. Here we celebrate and share sacred memories. Beginning next Sunday, Ken Griesemer, a well known liturgical design consultant, will be leading us in three workshops as we prepare for this vital task. Questions to Ponder: *How does our present worship space foster our mission as intentional disciples? How could the space we use for worship better foster prayer and our celebration of the Sacraments? WILL YOU COME TO THE WORKSHOPS OCTOBER 18-20?

3 The Bancks Family: There s So Much Grace Whenever the Bancks family goes through challenges, they find themselves constantly saying, There s so much grace. The demand for grace was at a high point last May when Leo, their youngest, required openheart surgery. The whole ordeal was very scary, Jacob says. But we found an amazing sense of peace, especially while praying the rosary. Prayer is a kind of glue that holds the Bancks family together. That s why they try to attend daily Mass as much as they can as a family. We ve found that ordering our day around worship seems to make everything else go smoothly, Jacob notes. God s love is most abundantly present every Sunday morning as parishioners gather at St. Paul the Apostle. Jacob leads music at the 9 am Mass while Kara tries to keep the kids happy (daddy s words). In addition to Mass, prayer finds a way into just about every part of their day. We pray many, many, free, short prayers throughout the day. We pray a family rosary when possible. We ve found that kids learn almost everything by example, so our catechism includes praying a Hail Mary when we hear an ambulance, celebrating the kids patron saint feast days, making meals for people we know who are sick, and keeping water in the holy water font. We see teaching our children to pray, both traditional prayers and prayers from the heart as our most important task. For the Bancks family, being Catholic is about three things: Christ, the Church, and the Sacraments. Jesus Christ is at the center, Jacob explains. The Church keeps us grounded in the community of believers and also helps us stay connected with the saints. The Sacraments give us the grace we need to live as disciples. Jacob teaches music theory and composition at Augustana College. But ever since he was five, he felt called to serve in church music, a calling that brought him to the community of St. Paul s. I see the task of leading sacred music as facilitating an encounter with God, Bancks says. Which mostly means staying out of the way so Mass can be a channel of grace Christ intended it to be. At the heart of Kara s vocation right now is motherhood, which, Kara explains is a fully time, 24/7 job! She also feels a special call to encourage and pray for other moms, especially those who have sick children. Whatever the challenges, and there are many, Jacob and Kara remind us that through Christ there s so much grace.

4 What We Did Last Friday By: Michael Havercamp Last Friday, we welcomed about twenty people over to our house. Yes, there was food but it was not a dinner party. Yes, there was beer and wine, but this was not merely a social gathering. Only a few of our guests knew each other, so I could tell that it was a little awkward at first. Even I wondered how the night would go. We allowed our guests to trickle in, to grab a drink, or fill a plate with a growing plethora of appetizer options that was slowly taking over our counter space. There were veggie trays and artichoke dip, beer cheese and pretzels, and (thanks be to Jesus) one gratuitous guest brought brownies with toffee candy melted into the middle. I think I helped myself to four of those before the night was over. Shortly thereafter, we ushered everyone into the family room where people found a seat. Then we did the unthinkable. We talked about Jesus. And liked it. We introduced ourselves and shared funny stories about how we met our spouses. We prayed and we opened the Scriptures. We reflected on life and marriage. We talked about what it might look like to follow Jesus injunction to be more childlike in our faith. It was great! We laughed and joked. We even talked about our struggles, the kind of things that make it difficult to fully trust in God. The more honest we were, the easier it became to let our guard down. As we became real to each other, it became clear that none of us really had it all together. Each person, each marriage, each family struggles in its own way. And yet, we have all been touched by Jesus who picks us up, heals our wounds, and encourages us on the way. We ended the night with a very special treat. One couple shared their life story. They simply told the story of their life, their faith, and those key moments that helped them to become who they are today. Not every detail, just the highlights (and the lowlights), just enough to leave us all wanting more. There was laughter and there were tears. It was real life - non-scripted, non-edited. And it was awesome! And through it all, there was Jesus at the center, sometimes as the lead character in the play, sometimes on the margins waiting to be invited in. It was clear to all that Jesus was present that night in the life stories, in the honest sharing, in the fellowship of differents that all gathered for the same reason. We were looking for friends on the journey, encouragement through the tough times, and a reminder that our hearts will ultimately be restless until we return to God. I can only speak for myself, but I found what I was looking for that night. And I look forward to many such nights to come. This is what it looks like to be a part of a L.I.F.E. group, a Loving, Interactive, Faith- Sharing, Experiential group of people trying to be more intentional about their faith. Sound good to you? Don t wait another day! Call the parish today and take a deeper plunge into God through a LIFE group. God is calling!

Children are welcome to be in babysitting for all or part of 11AM Mass- whatever works best for your family. The babysitting room is located in the Multipurpose Room under the Gathering Space and is a safe child-friendly environment. Babysitting is also offered during IGNITE for children 6months- 8 years and during Mom's Ministry for toddlers and preschoolers. The rich man whom he encountered could not part with his possessions as a condition to becoming a disciple of Jesus. Would our response be the same as the rich man? Do we place our trust in our money and possessions instead of trusting in God s generosity? Do we seek security in our possessions? Good stewards realize that their possessions must not possess them, lest those possessions block their relationship with the Lord.
