2 July 3, 2016 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PEACE The gree ng of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today s readings: peace is rela onal. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the L s power shall be known to his servants (Isaiah 66:14c). The Chris an understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the peace and mercy on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with others. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that we re having a bap sm today, or maybe you say we are having a christening. The proper term is bap sm, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of christening in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interes ng. Bap sm, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than ge ng splashed with water, the person being bap zed is being Christ-ed. No ma er what you call it, there s always water involved, and then an anoin ng with chrism fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ s presence poured upon the brow as we say, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlas ng life. So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you even though you may be squirming or sleeping are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradi on, and every me you gather to celebrate a bap sm, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more Christ-ed. No ma er what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transforma on of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. 3 PARISH NEWS Sean Duffy, the archives coordinator at the Ohio County Public Library, is working with the Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Oglebay Resort and Wheeling National Heritage Area to develop a bus tour of historic Wheeling Churches. They have asked if St. Alphonsus would like to be involved. Bus tours typically have about people and would come through about once a month. Buses would drive past each Church and then patrons would go inside about four of the Churches on the list during each tour. Each Church that is open during a tour would receive $2 per person as a donation. The first practice runs will probably begin in the fall. If you would be willing to open the Church for a tour and showcase a few interesting and important parts of St. Alphonsus to showcase it s beauty and historical significance, please call the office and let us know! See you there :o) A special collection to support recovery efforts related to the historic flooding that has struck 44 counties in West Virginia this week. Parishes and missions in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston are asked to take a special second collection during all liturgies on the weekend of July 2-3, Proceeds from this collection will be used by Catholic Charities West Virginia to assist with long-term recovery efforts. All funds will be used in West Virginia and distributed through our CCWVa network. For those who wish to make a gift now, donors may contribute online to the CCWVa Disaster Recover Services fund at which will support recovery efforts from the June floods. Please remember in prayer the nearly two dozen victims of this tragedy, as well as all those who are injured and lost their homes/cars, employment, access to food and water and to those who remain without electricity or are stranded.
